You know, If it weren't for spellcheck, none of the things in the thread would bother me. I'm a pretty good speller, and I never send anything out without spell checking it. When I get something, especially in business, with several errors, it just makes me think the person who sent it is incredibly lazy.
In online chat, I'm not very picky. I'd rather it be colloquial and slang filled, so as to give me a better feel for the personality of the typist.

From: Max Herzog Oh, (def 1) for sure. However, I would have inserted a comma between "rough" and "frank" as opposed to the "and". You'll have to take it up with the http://www.yourdictionary.com website, you affable flat fronted person. I can't be bothered with grammar checking as well as cut and pasting!

I would never begin to talk about others use of the English language as I am a High School drop out and not well educated. I'm not even sure what the difference between a verb and an adverb is...
However saying that, I do have one pet peeve .. people who use the word Lite instead of Light. ie: It's getting lite outside.
I blame a lot of the poor spelling seen today on Advertisers who purposely misspell words to make thier add's stand out or allows then to trade mark them.
I also blame Meriam Webster, he purposely misspelled words like Colour or Centre in his dictionary so as to differentiate American english from the Queen's.

From: Trout Recreant I'll never understand that over-reaction. Maybe they just think that sensationalism sells, but anybody can just look out the window and see that it's only a bit of snow. That's why they usually hype it up before hand, impending doom is on it's way. So you run out and buy bottled watter, batteries and toilet paper. Charmin/Duracell always advertise during the weather.

Damn you to hell, Webster! Was he also the pervert responsible for dropping the extra "i" in "aluminium"? It is NOT "aluminum". No, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO.

I think that was Tom Brokaw. He turned huh-RASS-ment into HARE-is-ment and everyone just went along with him. Now we're stuck with it.

I was going to add my rant about the verb to 'attrit' as a horrible US bastardisation of the noun 'attrition', which I first heard during the recent Middle East set-to, until I checked and was humbled to find it's recognised by linguists as an acceptable derivation by means of 'back-formation' (New words from longer old words). Doesn't mean I have to like it, though. I still suspect our former colonial cousins!

Oh, and I bloody hate the seemingly new verb "to medal", which gets trotted out by commentators at the Olympics. You do NOT "medal", you win a medal, philistines!

That still strikes me as PC-speak gone awry. huh-rass-ment sounds too much like HER-ASS-ment, and to take the reference to female buttocks off, they decided to reform the way we pronounce the word. Geesh. Give me a break, already! I have no evidence to back up my suspicion, so it may just be paranoia, but I really would be surprised if this were not the case.

Actually I didn't realize any Americans said HARR-es-ment. Even though I watched Tom Brokaw a lot I thought we all said Hu-RASS-ment.

(There was no curate at the time so the church was renting it out.) This was back in 1969-70 and I don't remember Thirsk, I'm afraid. We shopped in Barnard's Castle and went to a pub in Romald's Kirk.

Cotherstone produces a celebrated cheese, I believe.
