oh yeah, thanx for the reminder Lindal. Since we're discussing language...WTF is an "asshat"??? Anyone know the entomology of that "word"?

Isn't Google great???

Wow...and this is quite the personal attack. Retract the claws, Rebecca.

Incidentally, there is no comma after "fighting". The use of two spaces after a period has nothing to do with "the wrong part of town". It was used in typesetting days. Now, the use of two spaces creates a word processing nightmare, and more "experts" are recommending the use of one space.
I'm pretty sure she was joking. And rather cleverly I thought. I hope Phil won't be offended. He wants better language.

Joking or not, if she's going to correct someone grammatically, she should do it properly, don't you think? If the intent of this entire thread is to educate, the information given should be correct.

Good one.

I think it's safe to say "noone" is in a position to be casting grammatical stones.

I didn't find your post either ironic or humorous. As a matter of fact, I'm quite tired of seeing you go after Phil and Marcel with your claws out. Perhaps you could put them both on ignore?

Phil posts a personal attack aimed at Marcel, indicating that he lacks education and then people proceed to turn it into a pet peaves thread, missing the obvious reality.

People can attack ideas, but attacking people personally is idiotic.

Tha is my pet peave.

If sarcasm, irony and humor is beyond some people than it is unavoidable that some people will be offended by it.

The truth is, on an internet forum like this, to pick apart words, grammar, spelling, typing, typos, punctuation, poor English skills etc., is nonsense.

uhm...actually...it seems like they don't know either. There's a couple dozen "definitions" listed on that page. :(

You don't read too well, Rebecca. Go back to my post and tell me where I attacked anyone. And if I need a taste of my own medicine, you need to ensure that what write is absolutely perfect - but it wasn't ;)

Give it up Phil.

As a professional word wrangler, I have to say this is a lovely thread. Thank you, Phil.

I'd like to add the thanks of an amateur nit-picker. I'm enjoying this thread. And btw somehow I had never noticed that than-then thing.

I wasn't offended. I picked out a couple of errors that she made - that's all.

I'm not actually after better language. It's just those two words ('then' instead of 'than', and 'of' instead of 'have') that irk me a bit. They aren't misspellings - they are the wrong words - and I see people who are not native english speakers learning them wrongly.

Rebecca, NOWHERE in this thread has Phil attacked Marcel, Marcel's education, nothing.

OK, I'm leaving this thread now because I'm getting irritated. It was a fun thread. *shrug*

While personal attacks are absurd, defending oneself from personal attacks is quite natural.

Do I have to have sixteen hundred, Smileys and :) ;) to convey what should be obvious? Is the denseness so dense that one needs to sprinkle emoticoms as though they are chicken feed?

Oh dear. You really didn't read my post properly, Rebecca, but I'll correct you - no need to thank me for it :)

Marcel was just an example of someone whose native language is not english, and has learned to use the word "then" instead of "than" from places like this.

The people who I see as lacking a bit in education are those who should have learned the right words ('than' and 'have') - native english speakers. More acurately, it comes across to me that way.

Maybe we can keep working together until either the wrong information has all been corrected or at least we've all had some fun with it.

You started a good thread. I'm sure Rebecca can take your corrections of her in good humor.

If the written word could carry the emotions which are mostly carried in tone, inflection, and body-language there would not have been need to invent 1600 smilies. There exist for a reason, and help alot. This site doesn't have enough of them built in.

Thank goodness for Firefox's spell check I say. My fingers have a mind of there own for sure. But it doesn't catch stuff like "their" and "there".

actually, I'm pretty sure that was the answer to the OP's question, but the result was so much more entertaining this way. :D
