funny ...?
06-24-2008 09:40
I found this post rather funny at first, then it moved to annoyance. After reading more posts it moved on to a little of understanding.
funny - I mean hey, everyone is different and you must make exceptions for them. America is called the "Melting Pot" for a reason, so it is natural languages will also melt together and a new one born. (God help us) Those that feel they MUST correct those not using proper "Queen's English" I figure they must be the weak ones for not able to cope with the changes. "Bloddy hell" Annoyance - I am better than many but I too make mistakes, fat finger, or just accept some slang as proper words now. "Ain't" that right everyone? So how dare others sit in judgement over my use of my language. If you would just learn to be more leanient things would be much better. Understanding - True there is a lack of proper use with the English language. Yes people must accept others for who they are. However, if your nation has a president who is known for his blundering of the tongue and made up words, Is it not time to just pull the plunger? |

My all-time HUGE pet peeve, living in Texas, is the phrase "I'll have him to call you". Huh? Have him "to" call me? WTF does that mean? Why don't you just have him call me? And what is this "fixin' to"?? Neighbor: I'm fixin' to go to the store. Me: You are "going to the store". Neighbor: That's what I said...I'm fixin' to go to the store. /me blinks Actually it is pronounced. fit-in-nuh "CX" (the cunning linguist) _____________________

If the written word could carry the emotions which are mostly carried in tone, inflection, and body-language there would not have been need to invent 1600 smilies. There exist for a reason, and help alot. This site doesn't have enough of them built in. One of the few joys of typed sarcasm is leaving it up to people's imagination and to see reactions. I knew perfectly well that I would have some typoes---I alwasy do---<<<<< I frequently scrww up "always" abnd and "and" scrww among other typoes. the telltale "Edited by....." is annoying as well. Typoes, poor grammar, cloying babytalk, colloquialisms and all of that, is an annoyance, but they are all forgivable and shouldn't be the target of personal attacks, when it is wrong ideas that could be the targets of criticism in a forum like this. I knew errors in what I wrote would be pointed out. My typing is very fast and sloppy and although I hate re-reading and editing when being humorous, I try to edit if what I have typed, is so off, the idea may be misunderstood if I am being serious. If I do re-read my posts and see a glaring error in how i am stating an idea, then I will edit. Nevetheless, regardless how Phil might protest, using Marcel as his excample of a low class education and pretending he was only thinking about the welfare of non-English speaking people is a personal attack---regardless of how deserving Marcel might be of critiques of his ideas. Since his post was not in defense of himself from a Marcel attack (at least on this thread) and was the original post in the thread, it was uncalled for. |

I found this post rather funny at first, then it moved to annoyance. After reading more posts it moved on to a little of understanding. I guess a number of people are annoyed by the nitpicking that is going on here. But I think for some of us, the English language (or language in general) is like a big toy, or a puzzle, or something to be played with, sculpted, displayed and bandied about. So it's less about picking on those who care less about it than it is to discuss it, the way some folks discuss old cars or their stamp collection. So, coming across someone using "would of" is simply a darn fine reason to start rant ![]() If SL isn't full of nerds, I don't know what is. _____________________

oh yeah, thanx for the reminder Lindal. Since we're discussing language...WTF is an "asshat"??? Anyone know the entomology of that "word"? An asshat is formed when you place your skull into your own anal orifice. Said orifice becomes your hat. IMHO "CX" (words fail me) _____________________

Yeah, yeah. But that "myself" thing is so-o-o annoying. If you are not a U.S.er you can probably only begin to imagine how much I cringe every time he opens his mouth. Oh my goodness, Kaimi, yes. One word alone sends me over the edge...nuclear. It's not nookyoolar!!!! |

I've been looking for an occasion to expound on the misused word that has been bothering me the most lately: myself. People keep using it as the subject of sentences when it should only be used as the object. Furthermore it should only be used as the object in sentences that have I as the subject. I do things. Things happen to me. Only I can do things to myself. And "myself" never never does anything. "Bob and myself want to thank you." WRONG "It was nice of you to invite Bob and myself." WRONG "I want to thank myself." Right "I invited myself." Right. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. |

Kidding, Kyllie I do tend to skip over text containing things like the above. If ya can't bother to write good, I can't bother to read ya. ![]() _____________________

He's not the only one. Harrison Ford said it in the new Indy Movie, but that could have beem an intentional jab. Harrison Ford has been known to say things like "Your Worshipfulness", so he gets discounted from this debate immediately. _____________________
