And I think you just proved Strife's point about misquotation. The actual quote is "This forum isn't for general discussion;". .

Well you're welcome to add 'General' to my quote if it'll really make you feel better.

It won't make me feel better, but if you want your comments to be taken seriously, then misquoting Strife in a way that changes the meaning of what s/he has said is unlikely to help your cause.

I apologize, Wulfric. I'll add the word General in future. I never realized how it may have changed the meaning for some people. But it doesn't change a thing for me. :p

But don't worry, I'm not going to report you for being a total asshole. LL already knows.

Yeah, thats why they gave Strife an award at the Chicago meet i guess.

Phew! another saga thread!
Well, I dread to imagine how many posts I've posted *to* have got locked, but it doesn't worry me unduly.
I think I did have one I started locked in my early days. I'll put that down to not truly absorbing the rules.
I did some months back explore the plethora of third party sites but in all honesty couldn't find any that weren't cliquey or rarely visited. I can't say the linked SC thread appeals to me to revisit.
I therefore put up with the closed threads. I'm sorry it always seems to happen overnight for me so when I go to revisit one I posted to the following morning, blam!

I know a lot of posters have stood up in their prams, throwing out their rattles screaming LL don't care, but here *is* the official forum? We've seen Lindens post and in this very thread, Strife has said s/he will contact LL. Now that's got to be progress hasn't it? Better than bitching on some third party site in my view.

There was a sub-plot earlier if I may put a word in on that?
I joined after the General Forum debacle but from my earlier experience of another forum I participated in much general banter. My view on it is this; the forum is like a help desk with a lot of helpers behind it. Few of us I believe would stay if it wasn't entertaining. Jeez it's not like we're being paid for it! Sooo .. we keep ourselves amused. Someone comes along with a question and wham, they get answers. Now the more there are here, the higher the chance of the right answer? Now by here I mean RA. IF we had a General forum, how many of us would reside in that perhaps forgetting to look back in RA? I think lots! Far easier to scan one list of forum threads than jump back and forth across forums, no?

Anyway, nice posts Isablan and Colette!

I think people need to loosen up a lil bit.

The only ones who get banned from the forums are those that

a) Repeatedly and consistantly ignore warnings to stop doing something that is disrtuptive

or

b) Repeatedly and cosistantly attack the moderators or another poster.

No one is getting banned for just speaking their mind.

Id honestly be interested in knowing if the people who've switched from active participation to lurking or using forums alts even got a single warning for what they said on the forums.
Not at all. I started to use a forum alt out of fear. I was aware of somebody with a business whose assets undoubtedly got frozen for a while because his suspension extended in-world. I was concerned about that happening to me. I've stopped using the forum alt because my in-world assets aren't so great these days, and it was a nuisance having to keep logging into the site with different accounts. Besides, this account is more *me* and I always felt like a fraud posting through an alt. ;)

Anyway, with regards the person who got banned, there was already a lot of history that was pretty outrageous. Like the ISP of a third-party forum being threatened with DMCA take-down notices because Strife didn't like his private conversations (which related to an official forum issue) being posted there.

I will simply always feel at risk posting in a forum where the person in charge has displayed that kind of appalling, unprofessional judgement in the past. I also get the impression that he's beyond reproach, not least because Torley is charged with the task of managing him, but is probably incapable of disciplining him when the complaints flood in because disciplining somebody is not a very happy-go-lucky, watermelony thing to do.

It's absurd to think lots of people have left just because of thread locking really. So much other stuff has gone down, but you're hardly going to hear about it here.

Perhaps, unless we had questions. It's true probably, as I don't look in any of the building or scripting forums as those things don't interest me.

As an apparent Pin Up Girl fot the Panties, Pie , and Pics Club, I'll weigh in for what it's worth. I never intentionally want to derail a thread, I tend to have a quick flippant wit so it's an instinct. In a serious question thread, I try not to post nonsense if the qestion has yet to be answered, not always successfully. Most of the time these threads spin off because the OP hae either been answered, can't be answered, or is of a nature that it needs a little laughter. After all, we come here to be informed, yes, but at least I, also come to be entertained. There are some truly great people here, sharp minds and outrageous senses of humor. A good portion of my friends list is made up of forum members, several are people who are as dear to me as anyone in RL.

For the most part I do think the Moderation here is OK. I think Srife does the best job "they" :p can with the tools given. Maybe rash sometimes on locking or moving threads? Perhaps.Humans do impulsive things sometimes. I walked into Macy's the other day and spent way too much on a pair of peep toe slingbacks that I had to have (and are killing my feet right now).

All in all, I think most of us do what we de here in good faith, including Strife, and we sometimes go astray. No big deal. I think a little gentle nudging can either get threads back on course, or to tail off and die on their ow. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

And re deleting "General" from that quote, makes a HUGE difference, good call.

Now who wants some pie?

That is one thing that I am not agreeable on at all, the fact that a Forum Post can get you banned from the game, and your assets seized. To me that's Virtual Dictatorial Terrorism.
That happen too much in RL life where people are arrested for expressing opinions, and not for actual behavior. That's as close as I will come to Godwining this thread.

It's the pie, panties and pics clique! Get it right or I'll file a DMCA take-down notice against your panties. :p

Your sense of humour is a major strength of these forums Brenda. I'd miss you if you left .. unless you chose to post at some other place where I lurk, obviously. :D

My World, My Imagination...............

Thank you Walker, that was a nice thing to say. :) My humor is an acquired taste, I know, and is useless without instigat...I mean an audience.

I'm not planning on leaving , at least not today. But even if I did, I am available for private parties. My panties are also available as an added attraction.

Interesting.

However consider this-

Who is so basically insecure that an argument over the forums of a video game leads to the reprinting of private corespondance on a thrid party site?

If I were to exchange PM's with you I would expect them to remain between us.

Even if they exchange became heated.

If I were to repost a private argument between us, You might become agitated. I know I would if the reverse was true.

---------------------------------------------

You also have to consider that some third party sites (like any other forums) manfacture a Hefty portion of its own drama, people potentially get cuaght up in the moment. In some cases leading to self fufilling prophesies.

You've been around a lot longer than I, you know the gaming world. Many are insecure, immature, socially inept basement dwellers. It's a stereotype, yes, in fact it has been disproved to an extent to me by the people on this very forum. But it is still a reality.

I said it before, and it seemed to offend a couple of members, but I've gone back to SC and looked around, and I still am not comfortable. It is not a slight against any of the members, many names I recognize from here. I just don't like the atmosphere.

Thing is, it wasn't exactly a heated conversation. Strife was just calmly explaining stuff. The PMs are still online for all to see. They aren't protected by the DMCA, and I'm pretty sure it's an abuse of the DMCA to get a site taken offline for publishing them.

I agree with you Colette, but if I published those PMs on my website, I wouldn't expect you to file a DMCA take down notice with my ISP. Sure, I would expect some drama and an end to our friendship, but I wouldn't expect you to get my website shut down. :)

Most of that post is nonsensical...I mean, have you ever seen a 'bot post? A 'baron, maybe, but not a 'bot. Anyone that randomly judgmental is obviously not worth taking seriously.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

[...]im not sure if i like the idea of more rm's. i think a bit of distance (even aloofness) is required, very active forum participants arent necessarily the best moderators. so who to have as rm's then?
I was kinda wondering about that too. The job would probably be easier to do if one really didn't care about--or maybe even understand--any of the content. The quality of moderation would surely suffer, but there'd be a lot less angst involved with being a moderator.
