So I have to wonder, is this feature going to be available ever or is it dead in the water? I've been thinking of making an alt but I dont' want to get her now unless I can choose the last name.

This feature isn't dead in the water, but it has been postponed in favor of greater focus on http in the client and some related scaling projects. I'm hoping to revive it this next month.

No name change, NICKNAMES
05-30-2006 13:21
I want to affirm what one of the earliest posters suggested - that we NOT be able to change our "true" names, the account names we use as our unique identification within SL.
Nicknames would be a much better idea - but it would also tend to permit griefers a veil of relative anonymity. I suggest that the addition of a name change be expensive, to discourage use of nicknames in this way. From what I've seen, the average griefer is a basic account user, who probably wouldn't even be in SL at all if they couldn't get in for free. |

Why?
05-31-2006 21:17
Besides the fact that LL would be able to make money on names, I'm not sure what the real benefit is of having your own name in the game? I don't believe you can compare this to having your own domain name but then again if people would pay money for this ... hey ... good for LL!

I would absolutely love to be able to change your Second Life name. My parents (my SL ones) are have the last names King (dad) and Skye (mom). I know my mom and I would both love to change our last name to King, truly representing the King family name.
Just my opinion. _____________________

Keep one-name/existin-name as primary
06-01-2006 05:58
The reality of multiple names per avatar still makes me worry about the possibility of breaking the wide range of scripts that use and store names in addition to keys accross the grid if multiple names for a single avatar are allowed.
One solution to this might be to have one name designated as the primary name and additional ones as secondary. So, for example, the existing scripts could still count on a 1 to 1 mapping between a constant avatar key and their primary name. That would keep the functionality of llKey2Name intact and wouldn't break all the off-site key, name databases and name to key lookup services. If you allowed multiple extra names for an avatar, perhaps their currently selected, call it the 'display name' for argument sake, could have some new LSL functions associated with it. So, for example, llKey2DisplayName() might get the currently selected name of an avatar (their current 'role' name, if you like), while llKey2Name still give their unique primary avatar name. Similarly a lookup of their primary name in one of the many name to key databases would find their key. Just my 2c worth. |

i hate the entire idea of this. at first when i became a member i thought the idea was stupid but now that i look at it, it has given SL a special touch. i have met and became friends with 3 other Galbraith's, and there might be more out there. but to me, having to pick my last name has given me 3 new friends and adds some uniqueness (i cant spell) to the game and is a nice variant from the thousands of people named "whatever seproth" in other online games.

Choosing a last name from a drop down list IS weird in the first place.
Why not choose one nickname or a nickname with a second name and force them to be unique. The scripts should lay the focus on a user ID, not a user name. The users are stored in the DB with an ID that doesn't change, so name changes don't have effect on contact lists. Just change the last name edit option to an edit box instead of a dropdown, and start to use objects unique id's more. That's my opinion. |

SL Names
06-18-2006 03:13
Howdy Y'all -
I'm brand new here so I doubt my input will have much impact on what is done or not done. That said, I'd love to be able to change my name or at least add a middle name or AKA of a sort. This would help to reflect the alias I'm orimarily known by in the on-line games I play. For example, in poker you have Michael "The Grinder" Mizarchi where many know him only as "The Grinder" because it's easier to remember and to spell. Most of my on-line pals are fellow poker players and they know me by "Mauidudi" so I'd be Quintin "Mauidudi" McGee if it were possible. Aloha and thank you very much for encouraging (even allowing) our suggestions on these matters. This is an excellent area of the forum in my opinion and I really appreciate the fact that you consider our opinions welcome. |

Changeing a user account name
06-22-2006 23:02
It would be nice but it would cuase alot of problem's for mostley everyone
Good reason's: To be Able to change the name if u get married on SL To change the name & delete the stalker Bad reason's: Will cause chaos for the server's to keep track of all the names changeing not to mention the confusion of there friend's when they change there names & people will just find another reason to complain about & will cuase another chain of drama, If this privlage is allowed for everyone i would make it to only name's that have not been used. So more than likely i would only fix this privlage to only people getting married on SL. That way everyone will not go crazy over name picking. That's what this privlage for SL will only be good used for when going to there account & accepting partnership. Thank u. |

I'd far prefer the ability to choose a nickname that's displayed instead of my group and official name.
The nickname would be: 1) changeable for a small fee 2) checked against a database for uniqueness 3) searchable using find 4) ignored by a viewer setting in preferences (people can see everyone by the current method if desired |

I still wont invest time or energy in a game/simulation where I can not have control over my name, first and last. Its part of my own personal persona... with everything else that is craftable it is short-sighted of them not to allow us to create and use our own last names.
Anyway, mayhap Ill check in in a few more months, havent logged in because I wish for a name I wish to use. Oh well. |

Great ideas! How about also offering us the option to rename our current avatars? Yes, some confusion may result when suddenly calling cards or friendships disappear, but people that wish to change their last names could be responsible for informing others whom they wish to know of the change. I'm assuming some sort of fee would be required as well. I want this option because I would like to change my last name but do not want to face the impossible task of transfering all of my inventory, land ownership, etc to a new avatar. -Ghoti I second this! Great idea. I'd love a common surname for 'family' within SL but I don't want to worry about transferring all my assets to another character. It's painful and it will make the idea flop. |

It seems like some residents have already been given this, such as Anshe Chung with the "ACS" surname for her employees. What does it take to have that done? |

There is a LL product called "buying bulk accounts" — you pay for 40 accounts with a discount, and are allowed to pick your last name that way (all accounts will share the last name). This was created mostly for academic purposes (ie. colleges offering classes, and paying for all students' accesses) and companies with their own private islands. But it naturally works for any user willing to buy "bulk accounts".

I think it's a bad idea to let people create their own last names at will. As for why, let's just say that I like the name Robyn Lindehn. In bulk it's fine, because there's sometimes a legitimate need.
I would, though, like to be able to change names for a relatively large fee, like 5 USD. I'd also like to have a better selection of last names. Perhaps some sort of a suggestion tool? |

It seems like some residents have already been given this, such as Anshe Chung with the "ACS" surname for her employees. What does it take to have that done? It takes money, LL likes her because shes a media magnet, popular etc. LL is too high-strung and.. well... besically look down apon the regular joe smoe in SL. It takes Lz to have POWER! LL LOVES THEIR L. If you want your name changed you will have to make atleast a million Lz a month in SL. _____________________

Buying your own last name would be wonderful! As long as it is appropriate there's no problem!
I can't wait. |

When I joined up, none of the offered last names were at all appealing. I consider this account to just be a temporary one, waiting for a decent name to be available. This is really a stupid thing to have to do though. It is a barrier to me, and probably others to joining SL in full. I certainly wont be paying for a premium membership until I can get a last name that I like.
I think that at the very least, offer a last name change for free, but only once. That way, people can pay their premium memberships, and change to a proper last name when one becomes available. Having more last name options at the start is a good idea. I'm not so sure that retiring last names permenanlty is a good idea, I have seen people vith last names that I thought were really good, and just sat there wondering why I couldn't have one of those names. One really good option is to allow the use of you real last name for people that have been verified via credit card or PayPal. BTW - Yes, I DO want to have a completely lower case name. B-) |

I like the idea of owning a last name and having exclusive rights to distribute it. I think this would be very attractive to any families or clans, it would also allow partners to take the same last name. This way, you would know that if you see a certain last name, that the individual is definately a part of that certain group. However, this would of course absolutely require the possibility of being able to change that name later because as we all know, people switch partners and leave families/clans for many reasons. If they were allowed to retain that special exclusive name, or if they were required to make a new account altogether with no items transferred, absolute chaos would ensue and the special paid for rights would be pointless and more of a burden in the long run.
What I'd ideally like is very simple -- to be able to choose first and last names entirely provided the combo is not already taken. I would also like to ability to change current avatars' last names. The only negative part is that since a first name can be used over and over again, it might get confusing once old players start changing their last names... people can take a new last name and a new identity, others can claim to be someone else and smear the original's character. |
