prok, once again you make baseless, sweeping generalizations -- this time on demographics within SL and the forums.

I dunno, I feel pretty safe on this ground, because I tend to meet a lot of people in the game who are either females above 30 who are in lower-wage or part-time work, even if related to Internet/computers/communications and I tend to meet a lot of 20-something males who are in college.

Well I guess my sample is skewed if you are all horse-laughing, but honestly, I seem to recall even Philip Linden saying there are more females in SL and older females at that.

SO...show me the numbers? Just for fun, I could start through the game's alphabetized list, and look through first life profiles of the first, say, 100 that have them, and see what they say?

Ummm, people in game don't always say who they really are. Just thought this needed saying.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

He (Philip) said that there are more females in SL as compared to other MMORPG's. Something like 35% of the population if I recall correctly.

well, i won't disagree that there aren't lots of people in the IT world here, lots of people in school (undergrad and grad), and a high percentage of women... but I've met a lot of people of ALL ages doing all sorts of interesting things. Without stats (and impossible to get trustworthy ones), we can only work anecdotally, which is why i protest the sweeping division of SL demographics into two simplistic camps without any disclaimer on your part thrown in.

And "people i've met" isn't a good statistical sampling anyway.

Exactly Artillo though the latest update from Robin was 40% females.

and things like the free-4096.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.... dispensing false information again, Prokofy? How many times do we have to remind you - IT WAS NOT FREE. Bargain-basement pricing, possilby, *if* you stayed around, but NOT FREE.

Free = no cost or no charge.

Middle-Aged Stay-At-Home Female Part-Time/Low-Wage Workers

VERSUS

20-Something Male College Students with Help from Mom & Day and High-Tech Part-Time Work

I honestly think those are the major demographics of SL, and certainly the major demographis of those who post on the forums.

Another sweeping generalization based on: NOTHING.

Personally, if I *had* to put people in a box, I place you squarely on the first option: "Middle-Aged...."

Um, the "free 4096" is FREE OF TIER PAYMENTS. That's the point. It's sure free of tier payments. Those are free. If it cost some nominal upfront year-long subscription, that was more than paid off even before the year was up. I know what the free 4096 is. It is not free LAND. It is free TIER, after you buy a year-long subscription. So? It's a free 4096, nonetheless!

The deal was as follows, which is NOT free:

$225 for a 'Lifetime' account. That $225, pays for the tier for a 'Lifetime' - whatever that may mean.

So, the tier payment: $225

Also - don't forget - you still had to buy land in-world.

Again, not free. Unless you feel $225 is 'free', in which case, can you fork over some free to me?

:D I can just picture Prokofy going shopping:

PROKOFY: "How much is this widget?"

SALESPERSON: "225 dollars."

PROKOFY: "Wow! It's free!"

Good way to rack up a huge credit card bill. ;)

Wow. 4096 not for the $15/month it costs now FOREVER AND ALWAYS, but $18.75 per month JUST FOR ONE YEAR

...AND THEN FOR EVER AFTER THAT FREEEEEEEE

FREEEEEEE

FREEEEEE

YES THANK GOD ALMIGHT FREE AT LEAST

Yeah, buy land in world. Pay $18.75 per month for one year, or $225 for one big fell swoop. But let's call it $18.75 for 12 MONTHLY PAYMENTS JUST FOR ONE YEAR.

THEN EVER AFTER IT IS FREE AS A BIRD THANK GOD ALMIGHT FREE AT LAST

Does anyone else notice how hard it is to convince the FIC that they are the FIC?

That's one of the chief features of the FIC.

No! Don't leave Dianne. We all have suffered from Prok fever.. it's going around. Just take two vitamin-C and some rest, it will be fine.

Just don't let Prok get you into an emotional state on the forums. It only works to frustrate you and let's Prok get the best of you.

Here's an interesting web page that provides scholarships for women in THE PROFESSIONS. Like millions of web pages about THE PROFESSIONS it defines THE PROFESSIONS as you see here.

It adds MBAs, or Business Administration, as one of THE PROFESSIONS which might be more PC and modern than classicists would tolerate, but let's grant an MBA the same status as an MD...and let's not be silly about saying that in SOCIETY'S SENSE (whatever you'd like to believe) THE PROFESSIONS does not include sales/marketing even though "Business Administration" has an obvious sales/marketing component to it.

http://www.aauw.org/fga/fellowships_grants/selected.cfm

Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded for the following programs:

Architecture (M.Arch, M.S.Arch)
Computer/Information Sciences (M.S.)
Engineering (M.E., M.S., Ph.D.)
Mathematics/Statistics (M.S.)

Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of color, who have been underrepresented in these fields:

Business Administration (M.B.A., E.M.B.A.)
Law (J.D.)
Medicine (M.D., D.O.)
Application Process
Find out if you are eligible or request an application.

To read about fellows and grant recipients funded by the AAUW Educational Foundation, visit the Directory of Fellows and Grant Recipients

Once again, all complaints and queries about this fairly standard web page about THE PROFESSIONS don't come back to me, they go to THE SOCIETY AT LARGE, not me personally LOL.

Wow.

How could something be FREE FREE FREE if you paid for it???

The cost, if you break it out monthly, and you stay for:

1-yr: $18.75/mo.
2-yrs: $9.38/mo.
3-yrs: $6.25/mo.
4-yrs: $4.69/mo.
5-yrs: $3.75/mo.

and so on...

So, again, NOT FREE.

$225.00USD got it? good.

* although, I may stick around for a while, it is a smashing bargain at $3.75/mo.

I don't feel sorry I don't have a free 4096. I find that would sap initiative and make me complacent. I like the challenge of thinking of how I'll get that $15 each month to keep that 4096 going.

I never whine that I came in late, what I do is REPORT ON the privileges of those who came before so that they can get some exposure to the reality of the fact that a) the game is different now and they are out of touch b) their received wisdom and condescending attitude are for the birds; c) they have no solutions to offer for the game as it is now given their cushioning from reality.

Juro? Are you not as good at math as you are at architecture?

If Linden Labs offered a $225 one-time membership payment that gave you tier-free 4096 after you purchased the land

then

$225 divided by 12 is $18.75 per month for 12 months or one year and then it taps out.
It disappears. That's the whole point of a one-time, up-front, charter membership is that after one year, $18.75 per month, it's gone.

Are you saying Linden collects $225 every year? But I was told it was a one-time payment for a lifelong charter membership.

So where are you getting the

2-yrs: $9.38/mo.
3-yrs: $6.25/mo.
4-yrs: $4.69/mo.
5-yrs: $3.75/mo.

There's nowhere to get it from.

You pay $225 once. After a year, $18.75 if you will per month, then forever after, you have a 4096 free of tier.

FREE FREE FREE

Is there a problem in realizing this?

If you stay for one year, it is paid for.

If you want to compare it to the rest of us mortals, then do it this way:\

$225 divided by $15 is 15.

So after you have been in SL 15 months, you are FREE OF TIER.

That's right FREE OF TIER.

Interesting. I never thought of it that way. See, while I still have the smashing deal on the 4096 from my Lifetime account, I still have a 1/2 sim tier at $125/mo.

For me, the 4096 was a gamble at the time it was offered. I'm glad they did offer it and I took them up on it, but I found it actually encouraged me (and many other Lifers) to acquire even more land.

From the same way you calculated the 12-mo. figure. I just extended it out over a few additional years.

I pay the full sim tier ($195) each and every month on top of my prepaid 4096. As with all your theories Prok, this one is based on tunnel vision and ignorance and is completely without merit.

I dunno about you but my one time payment of $225 was so I wouldn't have to pay $15/mo ever.

When they converted to the land tier system (and stopped offering thse accounts) they graciously decided to make it up to us by allowing the 4096m2 of tier free land. You know, so as not to screw over their customers who bought into one thing but had the rules changed on them.

Personally I would have been rather upset if my $225 paid for a single day of service. My 3 month cycle ended on Dec 21, 2003 the day before 1.2 went live.

Wait a second. Wait JUST a second. Are you saying that the $225 wasn't just a payment for tier for 4096, it was the WHOLE MEMBERSHIP????

It's worse than I knew!

If today, I want access to 4096 land, this is what I have to pay, at the cheapest rate:

$6.00/month, billed annually -- so that's working out to $72.

$15/month, billed monthly -- so that's working out to $180

Total for one year of enjoyment of my 4096 (plus the free 512 that comes with the premium account): $252.

That's for 2005. In 2006, the clock winds up again and I pay AGAIN: $252.

If I am FIC, I paid $225 ONCE in let's say January 2003.

By April 2005, I would then be tier-free, and subscription-free. NO COST. FREE.
