Enabran, I would disagree with you regarding helping of newbies. Sure, most everybody does that to a certain extent, but there are people who do it as their THING. And it isn't an easy thing. To say that everyone either does it or is a dick takes away from what these people who do it as their thing do. It takes away from their very definable skills. Helping newbies is a whole skill set of its own, and not everyone is good at it. Nor does everyone devote a lot of their game time to it. Me, I can do it or not do it. I choose in SL not to do it. Obviously I help those I happen to run into, but I'm not talking about that. And people shouldn't be expected to do that either. I don't think everybody should be expected to stop in the middle of whatever they are doing to educate a new player. Some people hate doing that, and you wouldn't want to force them to feel like they have to! I'm saying that it is a whole field of endeavor, with special skills and talents required. Not something you just do, or else you're a dick. Anyway I don't even have a dick. coco

the only reason i see for this thread existing is to wait for the poeple she is thinking of to post so she can either flame or compliment. one more likely than the other.

From: Cocoanut Koala Enabran, I would disagree with you regarding helping of newbies...
[on and on and on and on about things I didn't suggest]
I know you enjoy disagreeing with me, Cocoanut, but I fail to see where I said what you're suggesting. I never said we all need to drop everything and help newbies. I only said that someone who would refuse to help a newbie is a dick and anyone who would render help when asked is decent. My point is that helping a newbie isn't selfless -- it's acceptance of your responsibility to be a good citizen. On what scale you practice it is up to you. Unless you disagree with me that it would be improper to brush off a newbie who asked you, Cocoanut, how to tweak one's graphics settings to something more usable? As for people who help newbies "as their thing," that's a pretty damn fun thing to do. Blowing someone's mind is really rewarding and it's great to see someone fresh off the boat inspired to go create great wonders. Infinitely rewarding, not at all selfless, though an awesome contribution to the community. Where's the disagreement again?

I farted in Grignano a couple of days ago. I don't have the exact coordinates, but I am sure it is still there.

I agree with Snowcrash, Eboni and Enabran that the original post seemed a bit targetted, and is not really a thread about celebrating contributions to SL, but about chastising a vague group of people for apparently criticizing a project. Even threads like "who influenced you in SL?" arare often ill-advised anyway - they end up becoming a popularity contest, and some important person or contribution is overlooked and hurt feelings ensue. As proud as I am of my achievements, I also believe that charity goes hand in hand with humility. This thread is simply divisive, and I have to say, I'm a bit surprised by it. Everyone has a valid voice - even a critical one, no matter what their "contributions" to Sl. You don't have to measure up to some bar of philantropy to be worthwhile in SL, or be able to post your thoughts. We all contribute to the community - we are the community.

On the one hand, this thread has devolved to the point where... that gets posted. On the other, I like bragging. Well, let's see... When Freya was the last person to hold Primtionaries, I stepped up to the plate and now there seem to be at least three or four steady scheduled games, including mine. I've run classes, though not as often as I'd like. I've tried to organize good ol'-fashioned roleplayign games via the medium of Second Life... with partial success, tho I'm a little busy to attend to it now. Oh, yeah, and I built the Dark-frickin'-Tower, which is more of a personal accomplishment but so what, it's mine!

From: katykiwi Moonflower Are you really arguing that unless a name is named a subject cannot be addressed rhetorically? Yes, I'm arguing that in most cases, this is most certainly true. There are some exceptions, but they're generally rare. From: katykiwi Moonflower Hmmm...since you are one who understands more than most the value of discretion and anonymity I am surprised to find you taking that postion. Please tell everyone on these forums exactly what you mean when you say that I understand "the value of discretion and anonymity...more than most". I want to make sure no one mistakes your meaning, myself included. From: katykiwi Moonflower Are you CERTAIN that unless names are named a discussion lacks merit? As I said, in most cases such discussions aren't worth much, and the better part of discretion is to leave it alone or deal with it privately. Of that, I am "certain".

From: Merwan Marker So Seth are you asking to be outed? Outed? An interesting choice of words. As whom or what? This thread is about the identification of people relative to their contributions or criticisms. Ms. kkM implied that "more than most" I know the value of discretion and anonymity. Very mysterious. Since I don't know her and have never discussed discretion and anonymity with her, I thought a clarification might be in order because I'm confused. Well, perhaps just a little bit.
