What have you added to SL?

Cynical dismissal....air of superiority...disparaging remarks...It is all here in the SL forums. Forum critics who spend their time perusing the forums, ready to fire unsolicited attacks, while getting who knows what thrill out of doing that. Some forum critics spend more time reading about SL in the forums, and then offering criticism, than they do experiencing SL inworld.

Ok forum critics, so eager to deride the efforts of others, here is a question for you:

What content have you given to the SL community? What is your contribution? By given I dont mean what do you sell for your own material profit, I mean what contribution have you made for the pure pleasure and entertainment of the SL community.

Some members have brought incredible content and creativity to SL without any monetary motivation. An incredible build; a fun game; creative use of features, just for the entertainment and pleasure of the community. Let's acknowledge them.

Gave it my best effort to try to help develop the SL Economic infrastructure.

The rest of the story is history, yet to be written.

It's all perfect!

Why do you only want examples of non profit earning contributions? I have paid for things and sold things that were for sure a contribution to SL because of their quality and fun. Are those things less important as a contribution to SL because I or someone else profited? Those things still took time to develop, build, script, texture, and distribute. As currently worded, this thread has the ring of yet another anti commerce thread.

Can we mention others?

Jai Nomad and Siggy Romulus - founders of GNU Dollar Store in Davenport. What newbie hasn't picked up EVERYTHING in this place? :)

Yadni Monde- Yadni's junkyard. Free stuff collected from around the grid.

I was really into free content when I first started, I imagine new players are just as eager to pick up a few free things to play with and learn about SL.

I guess I've not brought anything. :/

Phoo, and I was in such a good mood today. :(

... Though I sell birds cuz I love birds. Not cuz I want to make a dollar on them... if that means anything at all these days.

Can you be more specific, what non-profit efforts from others have been derided by forum critics? Provide at least two examples please.

I no doubt count in the forum critic category, due to my prolific nose-sticking.

As to what I've contributed: countless ideas, over 60 structures, about $L50,000 in donations to charities, totally sweet shirts, and a unique imprint on the community all my own. So there. :P

Isn't it implicit in this sentence she means non-profit?

I write stuff. :D

Sometimes, it is OK. Sometimes, it is terrible.

I want to encourage the writer who is better than I am to use SL as a medium for the distribution of literary texts.

I wouldnt worry too much about what you see in the forums, especially in the general forum. The fraction of SL players who actively read the forums is tiny and what you see here is usually more than 3-sigma off of normal.

For me the forums is a fun place to have a laugh while I eat my lunch.

It's a little known fact, but I actually invented SL. Philip is merely my avatar. You should have known that real people cannot ever be that cute :P

It started with a fifties diner. A boardwalk was added to create a bumper boat course. Skating on the boardwalk seemed like a good idea, so the boardwalk was modified to include a half pipe and jumps (with more to come). A pool table scripted to play 9 ball needed a Pool Hall. (Ya got trouble, folks, right here in Second Life; with a capital 'T' and that rhymes with 'P' and that stands for 'pool'.)

People seem to like it.

Now, I didn't read the original post as being restricted to non profits. I appreciate the contributions of a few specific people who sell stuff but whose creations help create the right atmosphere to immerse yourself into this small piece of fun.

Jim Lumiere for his Tiki Huts, island shop/pool hall, and ice cream cart. Weedy Herbst for working so hard on the textures to bring her 40's jukebox into the 50's. Moofp Murray for his kick ass roller skates. Tripper Tapioca for her skateboard which matches my diner (especially for the face animation). Vintnerd Oud for the Owl (sitting on its head is a hoot) and his refillable glass script.

And Teh Man, Les White, for his bumper & paddle boats, fishing rod, and the pool table.

My non-profit contributions to SL would be:

SLuniverse.com (including forums and knowledge base)
SLpics.com (Snapzilla)

Neither was created with monetary motivations. Snapzilla has given a glimpse into SL that was previously not possible, and that is extremely satisfying. The speed at which it has grown has been overwhelming.

Moopf's network connected bubble gum machine is one of my favorite things in SL. Between the skates, the gum, the vending machines, and other stuff, he has given a trendous amount of wonderful things to SL. We have clashed once or twice in the forums, but his work is beyond reproach and I really respect him for that.

Nimue, I hope that this post is not in earnest--that it is in jest. If it is not, please take heart--good things will come to you soon.

I've added robot avatars that are currently owned by approximately 1.25% of the SL population. And I ain't quittin' until only 1.25% don't own one of my avs! :)

Let's see...

- Several free scripts (3D Model Importer, BVH-to-Prim importer, Prim Mirror (sans drama), etc)
- Lots and lots of script support (here, in Thinktank, and general IMs/wiki)
- Primmies, the multiplayer strategy game, with my teammate Alan Beckett
- Several Miscellaneous projects and consignments for friends of mine (usually for free or well below cost to me)

And the stuff on my sigline. :D
