Update! I was talking the other night with Ian Linden, our ops-Linden extraordinaire, about this impromptu Resident excursion to Linden Lab. We put our heads together trying to figure out what we could do to make the occasion more memorable.

We appreciate the effort you all are making to visit us. And your enthusiasm is infectious....so we're going to organize a tour of the server colocation facility on Friday!

So not only will you see the offices where we all work, but you'll also get a chance to see the actual servers that host all the sims of Second Life. :)

Yay! Do we have any time frame on the tour or Friday activities? I hadn't planned on getting to SF till check-in time at my hotel (after 3pm) on Friday, but might need to adjust my flight times, or arrive Thursday evening to compensate.

I'm so taking a picture of Tehama......and a picture of me criss-crossing various wires. :p

I think, in the spirit of sharing things, I think Trin and I are going out to find versions of our ingame plushies to bring as peace offerings to LL and the servers.

Oooo, ok, crazy idea here. Since the bear thing took off inworld, maybe some members on the richer side of things can afford to bring their own bear to give to LL as well. Might make for a nice addition to the whiteboard. :)

That's awesome, Pathy!

But it may shatter the rumour that the dataserver is a Commodore Vic-20 hooked up to a 300 baud modem (featuring new AUTO ANSWER technology)! ;-)

Duh, didn't you catch the last town Hall meeting?

From: Philip Linden

Philip Linden: I'd like to thank everyone for all thier help with my shiny pan--- hey, agni.Phil is down again... how am I going to sell my bling??? sec ...
Philip Linden: LOAD "SECONDLIFESERVER",8,1
Philip Linden: As I was saying, for all your great help allowing me to rule the universe ...

I am hoping on driving up there, but I would like to plan what time I should get there.

Can someone who is going please contact me and let me know the itinerary, if there is one? Thanks! :)

I spoke with Ian yesterday, and we're going to plan on having the colo-tour for 5pm on Friday.

We don't know exactly how many people will show up, so we're going to play it by ear a bit. I'll be at the office that day, and I'll be in charge of helping give everyone a chance to see the setup.

A few rules, though:

1) Please do not press any buttons. Especially the big red one that says "turn the world off."

2) Please do not feed the Grid Hamsters that power the servers. It makes them fat, causing them to run slower on their treadmills. This is the main cause of lag inworld.

3) Please do not expect to see crystalline holographic nanotechnology biomorphic machines. The Grid is a bunch of humble rack-mounted servers. They work hard, and we don't want to give them an inferiority complex.

Someone please bring me back a bit of the duct tape that holds the grid together! :p

We're going to play this all by ear, so I don't know. As we get closer to the date, I'll be sure to update everyone on anything we have explicitly planned.

Everyone's enthusiasm to visit and meet us in SF is fantastic, but I do have to mention an important issue. Namely, *personal privacy*.

This applies equally to both Residents and Lindens. Some people are very open about their RL identity, while other people prefer to keep themselves more "behind the curtain."

So I'd just like to remind everyone coming out here that some Lindens or other visiting Residents may be hesitant to "open up" regarding their RL identity. Please respect everyone's individual privacy. Don't take pictures unless people explicitly agree to being photographed. Don't press people for details about their RL if they are not forthcoming about it.

Privacy is very important to us, most of all for the Residents of SL but also for Lindens. Please just remember to respect each individual's personal preference.

Thanks,
-Pathfinder

So let me get this straight ....

Several dozen people are flying to CA at their own expense, paying for hotel rooms themselves, arranging their own meals etc, to visit the company headquarters of the "game" we pay to play ... and the company itself doesn't know if we'll get to meet the owner while we're there?

Sorry, but this is a major slap to me.

No slap intended, whatsoever!

I am going to ping Philip and see if I can pin him down for a specific time to meet and greet everyone coming out. I'll update everyone here when I know more details.

This has been a totally Resident-organized thing, growing organically over time, so we were caught a bit off-guard. I'll work to rectify that ASAP.

 as hell.

I for one am cancelling my flight and hotel immediatly and taking a loss at my personal expense. Hell even Maxis was better organized and inviting than this bullshit.

Play it by ear? I think not!

I think that is what happens when you show up somewhere without an invitation and people may have prior plans. There are some rules of etiquette even though people seem to forget them. Linden Lab is not holding some open house meet and greet, a bunch of people have decided to go to visit of their own free will. Stop complaining.

Do you ever have anything positive to say? NO. If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. I'm sorry your mama didn't teach you that. Learn it live it.

You have been jumping on me and clair every chance you get, back the hell off lady.

Please keep it nice in this thread and don't attack other people.

Yes, this is a totally Resident-led excursion to LL. Yes, it was done completely without any planning on LL's part in terms of scheduling.

I'll be working to coordinate things as best we can to make sure everyone has a fun experience out here. I've already set up a tour of the colo facility. And I'm checking Philip's availability as well.

But yes, it's a spontaneous visit so I cannot promise anything. But I will do the very best I can to facilitate things.

OK, this just in.

We have Philip's calendar confirmed for Friday, July 22, at 4:00pm. Barring any emergency that pulls him away, he will be available to meet everyone at that time.

So in general...plan on showing up at LL around 4pm if you'd like to meet Philip. :)

After the colo tour at 5pm, I plan on crawling the local pubs and kicking back with anyone who is interested in sharing a few pints of Guinness (or your beverage of choice). Cheese and peanuts may be included.

No offense, but this a LOT more planned than the last time I went to LL. I think all we did was call Robin and ask if we could show up. We got to meet Philip, but you have to remember that this is totally just a bunch of us deciding to go down and have fun. I'm pretty sure at any of the officially sponsored LL visits, Phil is there to meet everyone.

Seriously, don't hang back just because it's not official and we have no total set schedule. Unplanned things makes for some of the best opportunities and some of the best memories. :)

i wonder if i might be able to juggle things in RL to be able to head over there for this.

it would be awesome to have the opportunity to meet Philip, and any others, in person! especially if i could talk personally with Philip, just to babble on about dreams of what SL is/will be.

i doubt i'll make it, but the gears are turning.

Regardless of what LL is officially coordinating, I will remind you of unofficial coordinating by regular everyday people who happen to be SL residents is going on behind the scenes. :)
