I seriously believe everyone gets flamed at one point if they post enough on the forums. It's not just n00bs either. I've seen 2 year players with 4000+ posts get flamed!

Please stop playing the "I'm a n00b, please don't flame me card" and just get over it. Every flame dies out eventually.

Well it only took me three days to figure out that these forums arent worth a dam. I guess you guys win. You have been successful in pushing out another noob. Pat yourself on the back and feel that gratification. Well good luck insulting people because thats what these forums were made for. PEACE

Did my unwavering support of your soccer moms comment mean nothing?

As I said before, I don't want forums where people are free to be as nasty as they wanna be, and minimize and deride other posters.

Matter of fact, I think doing so is against the TOS.

Deride that all you like by calling it "mommy." I call it "civilized."

coco

Then you really do need a reminder, good enough, here we go:

1) Civilized persons do not take every opportunity to dredge up old slights and wallow in them as you are doing here.

2) Civilized persons do not go out of their way to interpose themselves into any conversation leaning toward acrimony and try to push it there so they have a reason to loop back to item #1.

3) Civilized persons do not go around telling everyone how civilized they are and how uncivilised everyone else is...

4) Civilized persons do not have the need to do these things because they are civilized and the very idea of any of them is anathema to that civility.

You are, as always, your own worst enemy.... stepping up every time the spotlight presents itself for another maudlin verse of 'pity poor me' and it seems you will never accept or acknowledge that your own behavior and insistance upon behaving like you're the mommy of others, that you somehow are better or more civil than others, or that you, of all people, are the sterling example others should follow has resulted in the general disdain most hold for you.

The initial poster makes the mistake of assuming that because they had a few tumbles here, that everyone here is just itching to kick them. You identify with that because you think everyone who disagrees with you is kicking you. You simply lack the maturity to understand that not all disagreement is venomous, either this or you cannot understand it because all your disagreement with others IS venomous. Regardless, you're the first one to come running when the ambulance lights are flashing and in all honesty, it becomes sickening.

I make no bones about having my rude moments. It's called being human. Nor do I pretend I don't have them as you do. But by the same token, I'm just about fed up with you and people like you who think you're going to make everyone some freaking stepford forum member because you just can't function unless everyone is pretending to care about one another.

Newsflash, tootz -- sometimes people just don't get along. Deal with it.

So what you are saying it is perfectly alright to harrass and attack someone for personal enjoyment? I don't believe that was the intended use for these forums. I was told in a different forum they were attacking me and harrassing me because that is what they do to noobs in here and it seems very real to me.

I believe what she is saying is that everyone goes through it - you either get a thick skin to it and roll with the punches, or you scurry away and pout. Forums are a tough medium - at least discussion forums about topics. Check the areas of these forums where people ask questions about scripting, animations, etc..., and you will see an entirely different tone. A free flowing discussion forum with adults is never ever going to be for the faint of heart, especially in an environment with as many intelligent, creative, passionate people as SL has. If you learn to not take things personally, stand your ground, and not get distracted by the petty games, then you will find you can partake in a discussion. If you cry every time someone says boo, then people are going to say boo just to make you cry. It is human nature - never let them see your fear. Above all else, lighten the fuck up and learn to laugh at yourself, and have a sense of humor.

Ah I know you followed the forum i am speaking of and I did take it for about 11 pages of insults. But there comes a point when a funny joke becomes harrassment.

Well Ulrika does get a bit fired up, but again, sometimes you have to learn to pick your battles. What did you feel harassed by?

Heh. Well, the difference is, as others have pointed out, not to take everything personally. At some point the logic of things holds sway, to wit -- very few people here actually know one another and by definition, that means practically nothing said here is personal.

People swat at thoughts and ideas and the implication of the perspective that lies behind them. Sometimes pointedly, sometimes not.

It is the nature of the 'society' of these places.

Those that understand this on more than a conceptual level know better than to assume intent, motivation, or purpose.

The rest become entertainment by making themselves caricatures of neurosis and over-analyzation. :)

Are you referring to the forums or to Second Life itself? This forum is like most other forums in that many people take great skill in their supreme wordmanship and their ability to bring others to their knees begging for mercy. They wish. :)

As far as Second Life itself is concerned I have noticed a new crop of minor league griefers in the Welcome Area but that is nothing new.

You will find 99% of Second Life people to be very nice. The percentage drops considerably in the forums.

1) Civilized persons...

2) Civilized persons...

3) Civilized persons...

4) Civilized persons...

Missed one:

5) Civilized persons realize that the opinions of a bunch of bitter pedantic Internet nerds aren't worth getting worked up over, that gasoline, though a liquid, does little to quench raging fires, and that ignoring people really does make them go away.

That's the key. If you don't like the tone of "the forums", stop reading General and start reading the forums. A few assholes might think, "Haha, I won!" but more likely no one for good or bad will notice you left and you'll get to feel good that you hold the moral high ground. Additionally, you'll get away from 31 flavors of mental masturbation (General) and might learn something about SL from the "how to" forums.

If you don't like dog shit on your shoe, stop trying to kick mangy dogs' butts.

Heh. I don't mind them thinking I'm bitter if it means they stop playing 'innocent wounded'. :)

I doubt that will happen, it is way too coveted of a role to play.

These arguments that that is the way the forums are and that it happens to everyone and everyone is supposed to like it or lump it are flawed.

It doesn't happen, if you know the right butts to kiss and the right bullies to get in with.

And no, it shouldn't be this way. A forum labeled "General" (and this behavior is by NO MEANS limited to General) should be available for all, to post in with an expectation of having their opinions treated respectfully.

From the TOS:

"Be respectful. Please challenge opinions, state your own and enjoy the discussion, but do not cross the line into personal attacks and insults because you will risk having your Second Life account suspended or banned."

Asking for that - expecting that - simply means that I expect what I agreed to when I agreed to the TOS.

Again, practice what you preach, Cocoanut, since you are so fond of copying from the TOS. Take personal responsibility and quit claiming that provocation or anything justifies you acting in the way you admonish others for acting. You are soley responsible for your actions. You must not be that afraid of the risks after all, since you have partaken in insults and personal attacks as well. I know you will say "but but but but". There is no but. If you are going to stand in judgement of everyone else and play the role of forum nanny, then your behavior better as hell be beyond reproach. Otherwise, it is do as I say, not as I do, and that is complete and utter bullshit.

I have no problem with debating my thoughts. Some people will agree, some people will not. That is why i joined the discussion. I enjoy to argue about ideas. Now when it comes to people jumping on my character and my intelligence, I will take that personally.
It is shameful to defend such ingorance.

I understood that. No worries. Just meant if it would put an end to all the whining, I'd be more than happy to 'endure' being considered bitter. :)
