Well Kevn, if you are all hot fired worked up about wanting to attribute Evangelical Christianity as the font of all that is good in the modern world, are you also prepared to accept responsibility for the destruction of the Library of Alexandria by Christian zealots? Much of the ancient classical Greek knowledge was lost from that petty and vicious act. Who knows how much history, art and science was lost in that act? Perhaps the Dark Ages could have been diminished or even avoided if that massive storehouse of knowledge had not been done away with. I believe it was Carl Sagan who thought that the burning of the Great Library set human knowledge back 500 years. I can't provide a source, but it seems as though it was in Demon Haunted World. I could be wrong. _____________________

The first mass production was the Bible. As an inventor one would experiment with books not considered sacred. Once one has perfected the method one would use that expertize to mass produce the important, sacred scriptures that one so loves. No, Kevn, it wasn't. He mass produced a Turkish calendar before he did the Bible. _____________________

Well then, we should think about what other things the Bible gave us: The Crusades The Inquisition centuries of intolerance misguided justification for condemnation of gays misguided justification for black slavery Kinda outweighs the whole book thing, doncha think? ![]() -S Oh, don't forget the genocide in the 'New World'! _____________________

Oh, don't forget the genocide in the 'New World'! It seems to me, that scientific progress occured in the West by truly pious men who wanted to explore the glory of God's Creation, even if it meant torking of the Christian Powers-That-Be. To Wit: Gallileo, who was an incredibly devout Catholic, but was wise enough to believe his own eyes, instead of the Catholic Church on the matter of planetary models. Also to Wit: Darwin, who could not deny to himself what he discovered in evolution, even though it contrasted with his personal religious beliefs. Progress is made by those willing to buck the trend, not by those who obey and fit the mold. |

Honestly? No. No? Really? All the awful things I mentioned are outweighed by the sketchy idea that the Bible "gave us books"? Fascinating. |

Progress is made by those willing to buck the trend, not by those who obey and fit the mold. Two quick counter-examples off the top of my head: Richard Feynman, one of the most brilliant physicist to ever live. Thomas Edison, needs no introduction really. Neither of these men were religious, in fact quite the opposite, yet they both contributed immensely to scientific progress. Organized religion in the West has probably contributed more to the retardation of science, rather than its progress. -S |

Supposing that for some reason that it wasn't the Bible that got mass produced, what might the alternatives have been? What other popular cult's guiding documents might have made it to the top one list on the early book hit parade?

You claim to want to have a mature discussion, yet when people provide many references that refute your assertion that the Bible is the reason we have books - you ignore them. I think you really don't care about this topic as much as you do trolling and trying to irritate people. _____________________

I could continue arguing with you that my references are better, but why beat a dead horse. Don't be upset I still disagree with you. I don't really care if you agree with me or not. No need getting upset, it's just for entertainment. That's why I stopped arguing the point with you. Peace! |

The Bible is still the best seller. I don't think that has changed ever. Fiction sells, what can I say? On a side note, think of all the money generated by the sale of the Bible. One source listed the number of units sold at around 6 Billion. At, let's say, $10.00USD per copy, that's a bunch of money. _____________________

2nd best seller is Chairmain Mao's little red book. What does that tell you? Also, Kendra, the Little Red Book, has sold almost one billion copies in just over 50 years, while the Bible has taken over almost 2000 years to sell 6 billion copies, 500 yrs of that with the benefit of the printing press. This means Mao sells faster than the Bible. _____________________

I was reading "Watership Down" last night and thinking how wonderful it is we have access to inexpensive books, thanks to the Bible. ![]() I especially liked the bit where mother rabbits faced with overcrowding could re-absorb their babies into their tummies so that they wouldn't have to give their babies horrible lives. _____________________

The Bible sells more every year than any other book. Interestingly enough that's not true. The book that sells the most copies every year is Lord Of The Rings. _____________________
