I've decided your car and boat, according to the gospel of the Velveteen Rabbit, have through your affection become human.

I love that Gospel, it's my favorite. :)

While I agree that one shouldn't attack the pollster for an objective poll that one doesn't like the results of (btw i still can't find this poll the Baptist Press is citing), I found a pretty interesting article about Zogby which is linked here.

How do you know? As you pointed out , since we once considered "black people" to be only 3/5 of a human almost anything we don't consider human might actually be human!

I've decided your car and boat, according to the gospel of the Velveteen Rabbit, have through your affection become human.

... Kendra, I disagree with you on a number of things, but right now I have a nonsexual crush on you.

At least, I hope it's nonsexual.

Ok, after reading that, I'm against primates having abortions. There, I said it.

WASHINGTON (BP) — It does not appear promoting abortion rights will help candidates in the 2006 and 2008 elections, according to a massive public opinion survey.

In a poll of more than 30,000 Americans, Zogby Interactive found Americans favor pro-life positions on most questions asked about abortion.

Pollster John Zogby said “much of the poll’s findings suggest Democrats will have trouble gaining a political advantage by using the emotionally charged issue of abortion.”

Among the poll’s findings:

• 59 percent say abortion ends a human life, while 29 percent disagree.

• 50 percent believe life begins at conception, while 19 percent say it begins at birth.

• 71 percent disagree that nominees to the United States Supreme Court need to be pro-choice to be confirmed, while 18 percent agree.

• 59 percent say high court nominees should not be filibustered in the Senate because of their view of abortion, while 28 percent say they should be.

• 86 percent agree with a federal ban on sex-selection abortions, while 10 percent disagree.

• 56 percent support federal or state requirements for a 24-hour waiting period before a woman has an abortion, while 37 oppose them.

• 69 percent favor state laws requiring parental notification for girls under 16 to undergo abortions, and 55 percent support such laws for girls under 18.

Damned, see even in the most backwater town in misssissippi there is a sold pro choice movement!

Of course the opinions in the polls are meaningless to support the ultimate conclusion. But that has been the pploy of the conservative pundits for years. Lies are easier to sell when they are dressed up as statistics.

I read it too, and it makes me even further against polls in general. But, I am pretty much anti-everything today ('cept, of course, Taco and the Taco Belles - oh yeah, and Chip too)

'There are three kinds of lies... lies, damned lies, and statistics.'

Samuel Clemens, although I've heard he in turn was quoting Benjamin Disraeli.

That's a logical fallacy to even suggest a point isn't valid unless the person who brought up the point does some thing you think shows a commitment to the issue at hand.

It would neatly solve the problem of abortion. The mass of cells would not be killed and the woman would not be forced to carry them to term. Everyone wins.

You could have respond along the lines of "nothing, but it is a good idea." Unless, of course, you are really just in it because you want women to be enslaved birthing machines.

Women who want the child call it a baby. Savy?

Optimism. Conception does not really mean much at all.

It is estimated that up to 50% of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among known pregnancies, the rate of spontaneous abortion is approximately 10% and usually occurs between the 7th and 12th weeks of pregnancy.

Not at all. Black people also were considered not to be human, and were killed because some people felt they could kill blacks morally, because it was like killing an animal.

Weren't they also forced to have children against their will? (It was like breeding an animal.)

It is so. Benjamin Disraeli is repsonsible for the quote. Samuel Clemens was refrenceing him.
Of course Benjamin Disraeli also said: "A conservative Governemnt is an organized hypocrisy."

See, my point there though is that by that definition, if claiming an unborn fetus isn't human yet because it is parasitic in nature, then one might as well label the elderly and infirm as parasites and inhuman by those standards.
You very much misread me. I said that a zygote / embryo / fetus is a parasite according to the techical definition of "parasite". I said nothing about the creature's humanity at all.

My friend can be fully human and still act parasitically.

Yes, and people die every day. Does that mean murder should be permitted, since people die anyhow?

I imagine trying to convince women to give up their rights is exausting work.

No, but I am nocturnal and as it was I had to be up to get my body injected with an iodine dye for a CT scan today to make sure I'm still cancer free. So you see, for me, while it was 2 PM, it was the equivalent of going to bed at 2 AM after I had been up for nearly twenty four hours with maybe three hours of sleep prior. And before you really want to go into all that business of defining a baby as a parasite, I'd like to see you suffer through a real parasite trying to kill your body and the "medicine" it takes to get rid of it, which doctor's give in hopes it will kill this parasite before it can kill too much of the patient's body, coupled along with a surgeon who screwed up and nearly killed you through a bad call and see if you all still define a baby as a parasite.

Hope you still feel so triumphant over my "retreat from battle" this afternoon.
