From: Lord Sullivan LMAO and what puts the icing on the cake is that its raining here so i cant even go and walk down on the beach, thats just sooo inconsiderate of LL's with their timing of this downtime Isn't there some sort of script you can run to turn off the rain? Then all you have to do is force a sunset and you're all set.

I was hanging up a picture on one of the walls in my place when everything went grey and silent. Maybe one of the nails I used went through bedrock and cut a wire? I hope the picture is still there when I log on again. It cost a fortune in Lindens. Next time I will hire a carpenter! Promise.

Noooooo! how about YOU give OUR second lives a chance, teehee

From: Winter Ventura *closes the SL Client*
by the looks of the blog, it's going to be hours, not minutes.. before this thing is solved. So I am gonna fire up a movie on the TV, and have a lil lie down.
Though a rootbeer float sounds like a nice addition to my evening, before lying down.
I miss all ya'll RootBeer'd. Homestar'd. Now I think I'll get my movie-ing on. Then about 8-10 hours of sleep. Then we'll see how things look after that. Night everyones. (wishes good luck to the Lindens)

From: Daphne Molinari Armegeddon! Again? Six hours after entering my study this morning, I finally noticed. If that isn't a sign that my SL crack addiction has ended I don't know what is. Now, point me to the mandatory zomg gimme compensation threads. I need a giggle 'til things are back up.

They've already posted a blog entry dated TOMORROW (30 December, 0200) stating the grid is down. Is it a typo, or are they foreshadowing the fact that they haven't a clue as to what is wrong or how to fix it? ETA: Typo fixed, but I'm betting the typo was closer to the truth. Time will tell.

Hi folks, discussions with our hardware vendors continue, and we’ll keep you updated as often as possible. Thanks for your continued patience whilst we work on resolving this issue.
---- Vendor: "Well we told ya u should upgr8 to Premium" LL : "Ya, but 9.95 more a month? sheesh" LL wonders what it did with all those tip jars. Vendor smiles.
Nice to know they're still on speaking terms, at least.

I'm no computer wizard by a long stretch but in my 2+ years playing sl i've never seen that message "Central storage hardware failing". It sounds fairly crucial though. Then the blog relating they are talking to their hardware vendors....
Like I said, I'm no computer guru but that sounds ominous to me :/

From: someone discussions with our hardware vendors continue Exactly what does this mean? The vendors repo'd the servers and now they want you to pay your bill in order to get them back? or... You don't know where the on/off switch is? or...

You don't know where the on/off switch is? or... They need the vendor's assistance with the hardware problem, but due to the time of year it's more easily said than done? I have no idea of course.

I remember the RL company I worked for until my health didn't allow me to work any longer. A rather small company of just 200 employees, about 30 of them using the PC network. The SQL server (not MySQL) had a disk array, naturally. They had 2 reserve harddisks laying around and someone who was able to install them if needed (me). Not only that, a second server contained a complete copy of the database, updated twice a day (over night and during lunch break), for OLAP services and as an emergency solution. No matter what piece of hardware failed, they could have been up and running again within half an hour. And during those 30 minutes of downtime, they wouldn't have told their customers to "get some sleep or go for a walk", after addressing them with "hi folks". From: Prospero Frobozz I think about power outages, phone outages, cable outages.... If your phone stops working, if you're lucky it comes back when the central server is fixed. If it's a problem in your house, you have to make an appointment for somebody to come at some unspecified time on a day in the future. If your water heater happens to die on the weekend, you pay a premium to get it working again before next Monday. (I speak from experience on this.) So when SL goes down in the middle of the night, and we don't get an update on it for 25 minutes... the whining that results is truly amazing. If my phone line at home is dead, I don't expect it to be fixed within minutes. I don't need my phone to run a business, I don't lose $X every hour and I don't pay $XXX for the service (removed the actual numbers). Abovementioned company was a business customer; if they had a phone system issue, the phone company sent someone over right away. I recall they paid less for this special service than I pay for SL.

Sorry Ishtara but comparing the multi-terabyte SL database to a small db where apparently "2 reserve harddisks laying around" is considered sufficient is rather absurd.

From: Tamii Gwynneville You don't know where the on/off switch is? or... What they discussed with the hardware vendor: "Which one is the 'any' key?" Jes kiddin' Mari (Ha! Ha! Dillion is a Fark reader!)

Well its been offline all night for you Americans, but its been all Day for the majority of uses, and I do find it scary that they are talking to hardware suppliers. we could be down for days, and if I have no land or assets when it comes up, then it was great knowing you all but my foray into VR proved too emotionally deep and I will return to the real world
