I wonder if LL keeps an offsite backup of the asset server(s)...

Lol, thats what RAID arrays are for. I got booted with the same msg btw.

UNless it's RAID-0 ;)

I'm sure they probably have like a true raid with several hot-spares up the sleeve - but if what i'm reading is right, my theory is popped disk?

I have always had the conspiracy theory that items that mysteriously vanish off your land or out of your inventory are the Lindens way of keep SL lag down! I think the little Linden bears go out and delete random stuff.
Half of my house vanished since the downtime, they could be a little more subtle :).

If they actually believed SL could go bye bye before their eyes they probably would.

I get the feeling from them that they`re the type who does not realize how serious or real something is until it actually happens to them.

I've played Fallout religiously, so ill be your leader.
First we find water, second we build camping chairs for it. 3 drops of water every 10 minutes.

Wow it's been down ten minutes and now all the data is lost because there's been a nuclear explosion in the server room! :p

I don't want to agree with this, but I'm worried that it could be so. Certainly LL has not, with their recent actions, instilled in me the kind of confidence in their competence and coherent business practices that would enable me to easily say, "No, I'm sure it's fine." I can't reconcile the "love machine" and Philip's unwillingness to make his employees work on things they don't want to do with my wishful hoping that the place really isn't just running on a wing and a prayer.

@#online - probably either the servers are all coming down (10,000 something now) and log-offs are still in progress or - I did also get an option to "continue for IM" so it might be counting that...

Time is going backward too, it was 1970 a minute ago :) Oh yeah ... I set the time it was GMT.

Hehe, your last-visit timestamp is saved on the forums to 00-00-0000, which the php date() function doesnt understand, and returns 12-31-1969. Has to do with unix timestamps, the unix epoch (1-1-1970), etc...

Jean just posted about it on the blog, basically "everybody out of the pool".

Seems like the issue is related to the asset server - although the message sent does appear to be rather... badly worded and panic inducing?

Perhaps a timely reminder against all those who invest more than they can afford to lose, because they think they can make easy money from SL. I think you'll find that, if you read the ToS, if you lose everything, there's absolutely nothing you can do about it, and no compensation either.

Most of our disaster recovery plans involve keeping the source code safe (it's stored nightly offsite in a less earthquake prone area). In addition, we've chosen co-location facilities that are as impervious to earthquakes and other disasters as possible, including fire safety and electrical generation facilities. If San Francisco is shut down by an earthquake it could impact Second Life, but only for a short period of time.

(It's scary that they had to look up Disaster Recovery on wikipedia though  )

Individual Lindens I have, generally, found very cooperative and helpful (with one or two exceptions), and their enthusiasm shows. However, on a corporate and management level, there are some grave concerns about the modus operandi that I know many people share.

Sometimes things have a 'traditional way of doing things' for a simple reason - they work. Coming up with progressive 'new ways' does not always mean things are done better.... sometimes I get the impression that achieveables are not the only thing being distilled at the Lab.

Hmmm... yes... the source code is safe. But... our inventory, L$ balances, and such?

For Posterity.... one of the most frightening dialogs to date. This rivals the "Something is horribly wrong" error my friend received on a Mac Emulator.

I always wondered why the hell people would want to run a datacenter in the LA/SF area, with the earthquakes, rolling blackouts, and whatnot. Just seems like a bad place to put mission-critical servers.

Visions of a post-appocalyptic SL, smouldering skypods in piles of rubble on the ground, island sims wiped clean by tsunami waves. Feral packs of furries lurking in the shadows. Skeletons dancing on camp pads. Prim hair blowing in the wind like tumbleweeds.

Yah =\

However,
I personally think that whoever wrote that log out message was not instructed to say it in that degree. Theyre supposed to just say "[23:13pm PST] Due to asset server issues, we have had logout all users. We are investigating the problem." lol It`s what we hear from them all of the time.

But with this mornings emergency downtime it makes you wonder............ If sl is still down tomorrow i`ll be worried. But for now, *shrug*
