When you stop and think about it..really..
its late at night, the asset server is in crises..and within 5 minutes (even though it SEEMED much longer..but I actually timed it this time), somebody had taken the time to update the blog..just a little note, but its enough to let us know they are aware of the problem and working on it.

Try to think of ANY other company that does that..
I'll be willing to bet your phone company and or ISP has a MUCH slower response time.

I am sure that LL is working to get it back up as fast as their little fingers will let them type.

Yeah, it stinks when the grid goes down, but ya gotta give em credit...they actually DO start working on it immediatly and they DO have it back up as soon as they can.

KUDOS to LL!!

now..

Individual Lindens I have, generally, found very cooperative and helpful (with one or two exceptions), and their enthusiasm shows. However, on a corporate and management level, there are some grave concerns about the modus operandi that I know many people share.

Sometimes things have a 'traditional way of doing things' for a simple reason - they work. Coming up with progressive 'new ways' does not always mean things are done better.... sometimes I get the impression that achieveables are not the only thing being distilled at the Lab.

I agree with basically everything you've said here, from individual Lindens being quite good (they're just people, after all, and people vary greatly) to the overall system, which is my real concern, being deeply worrying. As you said, "progressive" is not always better, and frankly, nobody has yet done or said anything that even begins to convince me that not making your employees work on the "not fun" things, too, makes any sense whatsoever.

Go check out a few ohter forums you will see the problem was an issue an exact 20 minutes before the grid closed down and was down aprox 5-10 before any messages occured. On top of that I for one had live helped at least 15 mins before grid shut down which took 10 mins to get a response too :)

I always wondered why the hell people would want to run a datacenter in the LA/SF area, with the earthquakes, rolling blackouts, and whatnot. Just seems like a bad place to put mission-critical servers.

So put them along the gulf and watch them get wiped out by a hurricane or park them in Washington and wait for a volcano, or maybe kansas where a tornado can get them.

The earthquake that took out Asia knocked out fiber optic cables under water. Space junk or incoming particles take out satellites.

There's been no earthquake here I've noticed in California and the rolling blackouts ended years ago. Next argument?

Well it hasn't been safe up to now since they have been losing things. So don't expect that to change :(.

Actually, that is an outdated picture. One of the apes rubbed a bone against a server rack and now they are all most likely dancing around it as it goes up in flames. :)
Gotta love evolution.

Put them here in Dallas, all we get is 110* heat and tornadoes lol. I actually have servers at colo4dallas, its an awesome facility. Full diesel generator capability, redundant internet connections, halon fire suppression, etc.

If you want to see a really cool datacenter, check out HavenCo. They're on a man-made island, in international waters offshore from england. Alot of online casino's host there, to get around legal issues.

I think Central Hardware is just closed. Might try the hardware section at Wal-Mart.

I remember Dallas. Yes, tornado warnings every year without fail! It gets so routine.

Thank you.

I see all of the "HOW CAN THEY DO THIS HOW UNPROFESSIONAL!" posts.... And I think, sheesh. They have a system of 10^4 clustered servers. What they're doing is by its very nature somewhat experimental. The whole deal with SL is that there is emergent content... and perhaps some emergent content turns out to stress the servers in unanticipated ways. In any event, give 'em a break; they are posting updates. Even if it was 25 minutes rather than 5, it was up pretty quick.

I think about power outages, phone outages, cable outages.... If your phone stops working, if you're lucky it comes back when the central server is fixed. If it's a problem in your house, you have to make an appointment for somebody to come at some unspecified time on a day in the future. If your water heater happens to die on the weekend, you pay a premium to get it working again before next Monday. (I speak from experience on this.) So when SL goes down in the middle of the night, and we don't get an update on it for 25 minutes... the whining that results is truly amazing.

When a virus takes Windows out, everybody just moans and groans for a few days. There's no doom and gloom about how Microsoft is a company not to be taken seriously. (I have my own terribly negative opinions about Microsoft, but that's for a whole nuther set of reasons.)

first post (by jeanlinden) about it on Blog says
"[23:13pm PST] Due to asset server issues, we have had to logout all users. We are investigating the problem.".
I looked at my clock when I got booted..
so, my clock is a little off....either way..beside the point..

point I was making is that they responded pretty quickly ..
was just giving a little pat on the back to the people who actually work on this stuff..

takes a lot of patience to deal with 15 thousand angry SLers...
