takes a lot of patience to deal with 15 thousand angry SLers...

However, it doesn't take much at all to post a blog entry, comments closed, and leave the mess on the forums to the few remaining 'resmods' to deal with - if anyone except Strife is even still here.

Im guilty of being a SOB at times to them. But I wouldnt be able to carry on without getting pissed and just smashing it.

yeah, pointing out what someone already said, 300,000 people and businesses are without power tonight in SF.

Where are you getting your data?

Half of San Francisco is not out. In fact, it appears to be fully intact. Marin, Santa Cruz and Mendocino have some outages due to storms, but presently there are no storms in the immediate bay area. Want to look out my window? ;)

Thanks. Nothing in there about San Francisco. Marin County is only in San Francisco in Star Trek IV's world <g>.

Likely related to this weather. (mentions the CA issues at bottom of page)

From: someone

In California, another powerful winter storm left tens of thousands of people without power on Thursday as winds gusted to near-hurricane force and blowing snow closed a stretch of Interstate 5 in the mountains north of Los Angeles for 11 hours. It reopened Thursday morning.

Forecasters in California warned of dangerous winds, with gusts over 80 mph, through Friday morning in the region's valleys and mountain passes.

More on it here

From: someone

Thousands Without Power In Bay AreaWinds May Cause More Outages

Dec. 28 - KGO - Most of the power is back on around the Bay Area tonight -- but not all of it. A couple thousand people are still in the dark. And there was a surprise problem the wind caused on the Peninsula. Giant transmission located just east of the exits of Whipple and Seaport Boulevard fell over.

Since Tuesday morning, 350,000 PG&E customers had lost power at one time or another. The high winds toppled trees like a giant fir in a remote area of Woodside -- not an uncommon sight these past three days.

So I'd say, give em some slack, they can't control the weather. Could have been a surge, could have been a power issue. Could have been a lot of things.

Where exactly are these SF servers? Got an address, I'll go down there and take a photo of the situation if you'll all sleep better. Yeah I can see quite a bit of it as I'm near diamond heights. (and by the way, measure it on a map, it's a very small little peninsula not a sprawling metropolis like most big cities)

To me, the message that was sent out gave an indication of something going "bang" in a fairly serious terminal magnitude, not a power cut.

But surely, power issues are exactly why these sort of places have generator backup, surge protectors and smoothing circuits?

Ok so, 300,000 people WERE without power for a time. But as of this morning it says 45,000+ were still without it.

I wonder how many of them got it back by now.

Never said it was THE reason, just reiterating what someone had said as a possibility. ANd yes, they should have generators but even generators aren't fool-proof...

Not always. Failure protection equipment doesn't always work when it's under stress. We've had refrigerator-sized UPSes fail in spectacular (and dangerous) ways, and diesel gens fail to kick on. And *nothing* can protect absolutely from a direct adjacent lightning hit. When it's a hardware failure, it's unlikely that the issue was Linden dropping the ball.

In either case, even if their clustered storage threw a node, it's just a matter of inconvenience most likely.

(edit: What elaina said. Seen plenty fail - especially if the grid in SF has been shaky for a few days.)

The guys at Linden Labs live several minutes in the future, in an attempt to head off problems before we complain about it.
