Central Hardware Failing?

Not always. Failure protection equipment doesn't always work when it's under stress. We've had refrigerator-sized UPSes fail in spectacular (and dangerous) ways, and diesel gens fail to kick on. And *nothing* can protect absolutely from a direct adjacent lightning hit. When it's a hardware failure, it's unlikely that the issue was Linden dropping the ball.

In either case, even if their clustered storage threw a node, it's just a matter of inconvenience most likely.

(edit: What elaina said. Seen plenty fail - especially if the grid in SF has been shaky for a few days.)

but it doesn't seem to be related to the power outages, now does it?

The Santa Cruz mountains seem to be the only big problem. (about 75 miles away) Marin (much closer) is probably mostly back up, just some people in those fancy houses tucked away far from most of the population probably. Mendocino is off the map (>150 miles)

If these servers are in SF or San Jose or Oakland or Livermore or Walnut Creek there seems to be no power issue.

You got me, Champie. I'm a liar, we're all wrong, and LL is cackling maniacally while their henchmen drop screwdrivers into equipment on purpose.

There's silly string being shot about, too.

This may seem like a silly question..but if the power was out, wouldn't this website be down too?

I think forums.secondlife.com and secondlife.com are at least hosted in the same building(if not the same box)...

I mean, I would hate to think that with all the stuff they have to deal with, LL was paying some company in Vancouver for domain hosting.

If the power DOES go out, and we are logged into SL, the client would probably give us some different message..probably nothing close to 'Asset server is about to bite the dust! Run for your lives!'..

I would think it would be a more polite message ..like '..uh..who turned out the lights?', or possibly, 'Client has lost communication with the server..WHAT BUTTON DID YOU PUSH! OMG! LOOK WHAT YOU DID!!!'.

I don`t recall anyone blaming this on power outages.

"we are in the midst of cleaning up before we re-open."
You know.. sweeping up the confetti, picking up all the styrofoam cups and cake plates.. Taking the paper tablecloth off the long table, Pulling the streamers down...

Oh, and cleaning the current grid monkey's chair.. and giving him a quick shower and a fresh pair of undies.

and what time exactly is 00:20 pm on a 24 hr clock? :P

20 minutes after midnight.

Incidently, I'm done showering now, so you can re-open the grid. Thanks.

Edit: oops...missed the "pm" part.

I logged in with one shoe, and the alert "the attempt to create the object failed" (or something like that.. it wasn't something I had ever seen before). I tried to rewear the other shoe.. but nothing happened.. so I decided to relog.

An extremely helpful Linden told me to clear cache.... which I'd already done before I logged on... and to relog... after the logins were disabled.

I don't think half of them even knows what goes on over there.

I truely wish LL would fix what they have out before creating new updates. To be a paying customer this is just bad business. I am truely wondering if the monthly amout is worth the issues. I left a game before because the devs messed it up. I truely enjoy this game. LL please start to fix what is already available before creating new versions.

I was working on a script just before the crash, and I discovered I was unable to save the script..
After it came back up, I tried again and got the same error..

(from DEBUG console)
"WARNING: Alert: There was a problem uploading the text for a script due to the following reasons: Asset requests failed. Please try again later."

Sounds like might not be quite fixed after all..
[yawn]...giving up for the night.

Good luck all!
