Nothing like a little worthless pissant poking his head in to make some snarky comment yet again. coco For someone who preaches against personal attacks you sure go all pit bull. Seriously, I started this thread because I'm interested in the issues raised, so let's get back to the discussion at hand. If you want to rant on Siggy (or Enabran), go start your own thread. _____________________

Maybe it's as simple as the Lindens don't agree with you.) That is exactly the case, Surreal. They don't agree with me. If someone says someone else is a retard who ought to go shove it up his arse, the Lindens think - hmm, I agree, I don't like that person, either. And they let it stand. But when someone else says something much milder, and someone else AR's it, the Linden thinks, hmmm, I like this person, but I don't like that one, so it's OFF WITH THEIR HEAD. That is the entire problem. Either that, or truly a lack of even having the time to see what goes on here. (Which is probably why things have improved since the resmods came on board, even though I would prefer they hire professionals for the job.) But moving back on topic... from the last paragraph of your post. My contention is that PG is meaningless. One of the points I was trying to address in this thread. I posted the PG13 definition up thread for the curious who are skimming. Robin Linden defined what PG13 means for graphics - no frontal nudity, but what constitutes appropriate language is undefined by the Lindens or by the PG13 label. I don't have the quotes, but Robin also defined about strong vulgar language also, but that later got watered down by Jeska. Opinons on what is vulger, obscene, etc. ARE culture and class based. We are a multi-cultural and multi-class world. Someone suggested basing it on where the Lindens are based. Well there are a lot of things you can say and do in San Franciso that will endanger your health in some states. Sadly, I'm not joking on that one. Personally I like the wild west feel of the forums. Especially since the SL forums are in much more polite and interesting than 90% of the other gaming forums I've experienced. I don't think we need Mommies to act like adults. And IMO, adults understand that we are not all cookie cutter culturally and practice tolerance. Adults also use the Ignore option. Until the Lindens give us a clear definition or list, I'm going to continue to act as I think appropriate. I don't think it's all that hard to determine what is PG and what isn't, particularly in some of the cases. And if it were, you would think the Lindens would have the same difficulty in game, wouldn't you? Yet people are suspended for saying "f you" in game. But if it is for some reason so hard to figure out here, and for some reason "fuck you" is somehow more PG than many other milder non-profane things that have been said and received a warning, then the solution is to make the forums mature. We are all over 18 here anyhow. coco _____________________

Your boss could have and in my opinion, should have used more professional wording to make his point in a business setting. But sitting in a bar hanging out with friends his language works just fine. But would the fact that he chose to use that language upset me? No of course not, it is his right and I'm an adult not a five year old. I was a bit shocked. I would never say fuck at work, much less in a meeting with my boss and their boss. The situation was a cluster fuck and my boss (nice Catholic mother of 6) saying it shocked people more because she was saying it. So the mild shock value actually helped convey the severity of the situation. _____________________

This thread has solidified my opinion on euphamisms and hypocrisy. I've always contended that frik = fuck; darn = damn. They mean exactly the same thing. Saying frik off is a way of saying fuck off and being able to deny your vulgarity, hostility, or meaning later if called on it. It's dishonest. Euphamisms have their place. Like talking in front of the kids. Although if your kids have the brains of a clam they will pick up on it. But I wouldn't use frik to someone if I thought fuck would offend. How is shut your hole any different from STFU? They do mean the same thing. However they aren't received in the same fashion. Ask someone on the game who has been suspended in game for saying "f you" to another person. I don't use frick to someone because I think f*** would offend. I use it because it is milder, and PG. And ostensibly, the forums are supposed to be PG! I also use it because nothing in any of these forums has yet sufficiently risen to a level worthy of me using the f word on a forum. coco P.S. My husband just came in the office, and I told him to leave me alone, I'm fighting. He said, "You love to fight. You ought to tell them, 'You made my day, you f***head!'" hahahahhaha _____________________

No it's not. However you want the world to work, the fact is that if a man says to a woman in a bar (who has said nothing foul to him) to shove it up her arse, that is going to be considered worse than if he says it to a man his own size. And that is sexual harrassment. coco No, it isn't. You just want it to be. You embrace the double standard which I've fought against my entire life - the faux-feminist "Women are exactly equal to men but don't you dare treat us like men because then you are sexist pigs!" attitude. I will kindly tell my best friend to shove it up their ass, fuck off, and all manner of other things. I will not tollerate being told I'm sexually harassing a woman if I act the same way around them when the damned feminists have tried to destroy the chivalric code for the last sixty years. The sword cuts both ways. Take that line of thought and kindly take a flying leap. It's hypocritical tripe and should be left in the 19th century where it belongs. Bringing it into a rational debate today is pathetic. _____________________

For someone who preaches against personal attacks you sure go all pit bull. I have gotten warnings, one formal at that, for quoting material, while the person who posted it in the first place wasn't even edited. I suppose I should scream for months on end (and keep lists), in every other thread about Cat Cotton never being warned for her outbursts of profanity, which were directed at people too. Oh but wait, there's an excuse for THAT - "she was pushed" to the point of HAVING to attack others with profanity, and then the gender thing is ALWAYS thrown in, in a lame attempt to smear and obfuscate. I think most of us are bright enough to know where the real sexism lies. It lies with those who can't take responsibility for their own actions, and their friends, who are incapable of meting out their nannying equally to ALL, who then desperately claw for something to divert attention from the fact. coco talking about "free passes", while handing them out left and right to those she agrees with is just mind-boggling. _____________________

Of course like/dislike affects decisions, that's human nature. It's annoying when you're on the "don't like" end of the deal, but I think it's just another factor to take into consideration. I'll give you an example of the kind of thing that would make me kick someone out of the forums. Lewis Nerd's post to Phillip Linden. If I were Phillip, and would have walked over to a dev and said "make this person vanish." I don't recall him using a single cuss word. That is the entire problem. Either that, or truly a lack of even having the time to see what goes on here. (Which is probably why things have improved since the resmods came on board, even though I would prefer they hire professionals for the job.) I don't think you can break a rule that doesn't exist. _____________________

Just keep tugging on Jeska's apron strings and crying until she gives you a cookie as big as the one you think she gave Siggy. You're on a little campaign to get Siggy kicked out. I think that's pretty obvious. You bring it up every single chance you get, and then some, even when it's completely unrelated to the topic. Considering how loudly you screamed and how hard you stamped your feet when Ulrika tried to get you booted from a thread, I mark this down as yet another of your glaring hypocrisies, in a long, long list of them. As a side note: The idea that you're calling Siggy a coward for not joining some other forum just so you can curse at him with impunity is utterly laughable. He'd rip you a new arsehole there too, because you are not nearly as clever as you like to think you are. You should be thanking him for ignoring your pathetic little challenge, and for not making you look even more pitiable than you already do. Give it a fucking rest already, the fixation is not mutual. I am not on a campaign to get Siggy kicked out. In fact, while I was making dinner, I was feeling pretty guilty for getting mad and setting everything back, since he has been awfully good lately. And what was called into question in that thread was words he had not used against anyone, I believe, but had just said. Not said at anybody. I am on a campaign to get the TOS to either apply to everyone, or change the TOS. And yes, I'm pissed about it. He's said things to me that are horrible, and I have AR'd them, and I got nothing but big fat silence for it. I didn't say those things to HIM. HE said them to ME. So don't tell me I am obsessed with him, that's pathetic. You just don't like anybody standing up to him, is the problem, and the other problem is, most people who might want to are afraid to. And for good reason. He says things to me like he has and I EARN the right to stand up to him for them. Good - let him go to SC and rip me a new arsehole there. That's fine by me. coco _____________________

They do mean the same thing. However they aren't received in the same fashion. Ask someone on the game who has been suspended in game for saying "f you" to another person. Apples and oranges. I assume they said fuck in world, in a PG zone where it is specifically prohibited. There is no specific prohibition here. I don't use frick to someone because I think f*** would offend. I use it because it is milder, and PG. And ostensibly, the forums are supposed to be PG! I also use it because nothing in any of these forums has yet sufficiently risen to a level worthy of me using the f word on a PG forum. coco P.S. My husband just came in the office, and I told him to leave me alone, I'm fighting. He said, "You love to fight. You ought to tell them, 'You made my day, you f***head!'" hahahahhaha I have told Ferran to STFU before. Of course I was smiling when I said it, so she understood my meaning. That's my whole point. Words are meaningless without context and the context is what makes them offensive. _____________________

I suppose, as it becomes more evident every day that there are parents out there who can't grasp the old Sticks and Stones adage, who are raising kids, we shouldn't be surpised. Heck, Coco told me her husband would beat me up for the things I've said to her, and I have never directed profanity at her even once. Therefore, it's pretty clear to me it's not just about profanity, it's about control, and waving around a stick, treating other adults as if they were children. _____________________

I must be either highly bored or high on caffiene and lack of sleep because the thoughts are coming thick and fast.
How much is cussing related to perception of class and gender? I've noticed that many people (in face-to-face situations) are more shocked by a woman swearing. Some throwback to a "lady like" ideal. (in public anyway) And I've noticed that the acceptability of cussing is very related to class. I even have joked that working class people say screw you, and the wealthy screw you. (joke!) Let's throw in age while we're at it. I was profoundly shocked when a 2 year old at a daycare for children living in homeless shelters said fuck you... about 30 times. Mostly I was shocked because I think some things are age inappropriate. I wouldn't give the toddler Scotch either, or a smoke. Some activities are adult. What about if grandma starts cussing you out (and swiping your booze and smokes). Are you shocked. Or did you learn your best words from her? _____________________
