From: Lewis Nerd I don't have a problem with you 'organising yourself somewhere safe', as long as it's clearly marked so I don't stumble across it unknowingly.
As long as you have the right to congregate in Second Life, I have the right to avoid it.
Lewis Yowza. I'm not a sensitive person, and I'm sure you didn't mean it that way at ALL, Lewis, but that post reads a lot like "they can have their own bathroom, so long as it is marked as such so I don't walk in among them by accident". That's the mentality of the people who believed they were "sitting on the fence" on the topic of segregation, but in fact were leaning on one side of it, helping to keep it up. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way at all, it just came out wrong.

I'm sure you didn't mean it that way at all, it just came out wrong. I had to read it a couple of times just to make sure I was reading it correctly. I can see not wanting to be privvy to people's bedroom antics, but this smacks of the same mentality that segregation was forged from.

From: Tiger Crossing I'm sure you didn't mean it that way at all, it just came out wrong. It's all down to where and when, basically. Whether its a male and female avatar or two of the same sex getting frisky, or two furries yiffing, I don't care, as long as it's done in private space, as per the community standards. If properties are labelled appropriately, then I can judge for myself whether it is a place I will feel comfortable or not, or whether or not there are activities going on there that I may not wish to see. From: Lewis Nerd It's like a book.. unless the first couple of pages grab you, generally you don't bother to read it through. Same with the article; it starts off mentioning a subject I have no interest in, so I didn't feel inclined to bother with the rest.
It's amusing how words like "homophobia" are thrown around in accusatory terms when people are simply making a choice. I could accuse many people of 'discophobia' because they have never visited my seventies themed nightclub. Unfortunately, disco doesn't get special preferential treatment and protection. Fair enough - but I would never do a book report on a book I only read the first few pages of, which is the equivalent (don't shoot the messenger, you started this metaphor). Now, onto the next silly metaphor: comparing not liking a genre of music to not liking a set of human beings for a lifestyle choice. *shakes head in disbelief* From: Lewis Nerd I don't have a problem with you 'organising yourself somewhere safe', as long as it's clearly marked so I don't stumble across it unknowingly.
As long as you have the right to congregate in Second Life, I have the right to avoid it. Congratulations on taking the leap from silly to vile. The zebra has, once again, shown it's stripes. Okay, Linden Lab, let's make it so... I want a separate tab in about land, for checkboxes: [ ] May contain gay / lesbian / bisexual / transexual people [ ] May contain gay / lesbian / bisexual / transexual sex [ ] May contain furries [ ] May contain furries having sex [ ] May contain heterosexuals [ ] May contain heterosexuals having sex [ ] May contain Jews [ ] May contain Jews having sex ...etc... Please, just so we can make sure all the people who want to label other people can avoid them as well in advance. Regards, -Flip

Lewis What do you mean by labelled properly? What do you expect a warning sign that says "Warning You are Now Entering a Gay Sim" ? "Beware of Hot Av Sex"? Labelling can be a very slippery slope. You may want to label something for your own good, but you have to realize that some people will take great offensive to having to label themselves and their properties. Do you expect to walk down a street in RL and see a sign that says "Gay people live here"? Sure, some people fly the rainbow flag and that is their perogative to have pride in who they are. It would be a very different situation if every gay household and establishment *had* to fly a rainbow flag as a label.

Lewis You seem to take a great deal of pride and enjoyment in labeling folks...... So why don't YOU label him, as you do every other being that crosses your path in RL and SL. It must have some kind of payoff....you do it so often

For some people, an emphasis on culture, recreation, dancing, leisure time, or simple humanity becomes an emphasis on sex; Having grown up around Southern Baptists who think that anything other than an emphasis on Jesus Christ of Nazareth equals an emphasis on sex equals an emphasis on Satan - I grew tired of that long ago. Humans are sexual creatures. The fundamentalist taboo against acknowledging this has introduced serious dysfunction into our society. So we get two extremes - people who exclude sex from their culture, recreation, leisure time and people for whom their sexual identity becomes central to their identity. Some flaunt it, and some become militant and obnoxious.
I am /not/ homophobic. (it is to laugh, hahhah) - When I opened the article and tried to read it, the /onslaught/ of advertisement in the sidebar overwhelmed me and dismayed me, not least because I am at work (would a NSFW disclaimer be too much?)! and some of the advertisements were very /explicit/.
Lewis' disgruntlement isn't homophobia - stop that train of thought and pull it over to the side of the pretentiousness turnpike. I second it. Urgh, the /emphasis/ on sex /above/ all other considerations (like, uhm, taste and discretion).

From: Jennyfur Peregrine What do you mean by labelled properly? Using property descriptions to adequately describe what you are likely to find there is a good start. Then at least if a place describes itself as a "XXX hot gay sex palace" then I know what goes on there, and can make an informed choice not to visit. Generally the friends I have in SL are just that - friends. Whatever their choiceof sexuality is doesn't make any difference to me because it doesn't affect the friendship between us. In fact, the issue has only come up once in conversation, when a friend decided to tell me that in real life she was transsexual. Lewis

From: Lewis Nerd Evidently you didn't read page 2 properly. But uhmm... From: Lewis Nerd Finding that on the first page put me off reading the rest of the article. ... neither did you, by your own admission? And yet you felt entitled to make statements what it's all about, and to chide others for comments without 'reading it proper past page 1' so to speak... o.O;

From: Lewis Nerd I have as much right to an opinion as you do. The fact you disagree with mine does not automatically make yours right.
Lewis you're right Lewis, the fact that one person disagrees with you does not make him automatically right. The fact that everyone but you, disagrees with you, well..that's a different story. Have yet to see one person agree with you, that's very poor statistical odds on your side. A little education, If you tell a joke and laugh about it and no one else is laughing, its not that they don't get it. It's that its not funny. You are wrong.

Lewis Maybe you should stick to you PG land. There is a reason why there are different ones, so we don't have to listen to people like you. You make the tolarant city of London look bad. Do you actually leave the house with the grudge you have against everyone who doesn't see the world through Lewis tinted glasses? Man I feel sorry for anyone who gets on the same bus or tube as you. Sheesh. Was it the gay factor or the "SL isn't a game" quote that made you stop reading first? Since it seems bigots are the minority in SL, how bout we make them put up a "beware: intolarant bigot lives here" sign? Back to the topic.. glad to see SL getting different types of press. Maybe then someone will make a competing platform that works more often then not

From: Lewis Nerd Which label would you like? What, I just merely outlined what you were asking for, didn't I? Please clarify where I did something other than what you've been asking for throughout the thread. Did I hit a nerve? Otherwise, why would you be changing the topic from discussion to hostility? I've merely made general comments and replied to the intriguing ideas you've posted. I disagree with your ideas and have shown why. Remember saying this? From: Lewis Nerd If properties are labelled appropriately, then I can judge for myself whether it is a place I will feel comfortable or not, or whether or not there are activities going on there that I may not wish to see. From: Lewis Nerd Using property descriptions to adequately describe what you are likely to find there is a good start. I was merely outlining how Linden Lab might accomplish such a system for you. Maybe a tattoo of a star of a scarlet "A" would do a better job. From: Lewis Nerd I have no desire to rack up a forum warning, so I keep my thoughts to myself. Some of us have a thick enough skin that we don't need to report forum posts for something as trivial as name calling. Apparently we're becoming the minority. Regards, -Flip

I don't think land should be marked at all.. sorry but that is just going way out there on that one... but.. in teh searches I would appreciate it was a place that sold certain types of stuff or that club was a bit freer than others... its better to be prepared than to not be prepared.. don't you think what happens if i was looking for a particular kink or something, shouldn't it be in the description to help the consumer locate this place? both of you are getting your backs up and being silly..

From: Finning Widget Urgh, the /emphasis/ on sex /above/ all other considerations (like, uhm, taste and discretion). Problem with that assessment of the article is that the article wasn't all about sex nor are the sims and community it was describing "all about sex" let alone "about sex above all other considerations", which is precisely the issue the first posters had with Lewis's comment. Then it turned out he hadn't bothered to read the article before pronouncing it to be "all about sex". He then went one step far and what I would consider into homophobic and certainly intolerant territory by suggesting that people with sexual gender preferences and lifestyles different than his own should be labeled thusly as well as any parcels in world that would be tolerant of them. That is where he went far afield and smacks of deep intolerance, (segregation, apartheid, yellow stars sewn on clothing, all sharing a base mentality of intolerance).
