Check out the new article about Second Life and the resurgence of Provincetown. It should be noted that at one point in the story it is reported that the real life Provincetown recreation is in Provincetown West. That is inaccurate. The Provincetown recreation is in the Provincetown sim. http://www.edgeptown.com/index.phpEnjoy

Lewis Which article were you reading? I read one that mentioned sex among other things, such as a sense of community and a welcoming space for LGBT avatars. Guess you see what you want to see *sigh*!

From: Lewis Nerd *sigh* more emphasis on sex. Uh... the sims and the article are about gay life, which by it's very definition is a sexual life-choice! That said, sex is only mentioned in passing. There is by no means an emphasis on sex anywhere in the article! It's talking about lifestyles and choices and support groups. In fact, I don't see one mention of sex, having sex, or deviant sex; only of lifestyle choices. General comment to everyone: this is SL. Please check homophobia at the door. We're better than that. This press piece is very good, it focuses on a subculture of SL's many, shows it to be warm and accepting, and then goes on to speak generally about the wonders of the world. Emphasis? Heck no. Regards, -Flip

Finding that on the first page put me off reading the rest of the article. It's not "homophobia", that implies a fear. I have no fear of homosexuality, just choose not to be involved in it. Be very careful what you accuse people of. Lewis

Be very careful what you accuse people of. Where did I accuse anyone of anything? I made a general comment that homophobia should be checked at the door. That's all. Funny you found it to be an accusation, though. You might want to consider reading the rest of the article before you comment any more, since there were actually no mentions of sex, lest you be commenting uninformed. Either that, or just say, "I can not comment on this article, as within the first paragraph, it mentioned homosexuality which I choose to have no involvement with." Tell it like it is instead of dismissing it. Regards, -Flip

It's like a book.. unless the first couple of pages grab you, generally you don't bother to read it through. Same with the article; it starts off mentioning a subject I have no interest in, so I didn't feel inclined to bother with the rest.
It's amusing how words like "homophobia" are thrown around in accusatory terms when people are simply making a choice. I could accuse many people of 'discophobia' because they have never visited my seventies themed nightclub. Unfortunately, disco doesn't get special preferential treatment and protection.

Lewis ....and yet you feel the need to post a comment which is inaccurate to say the least. I don't know if the motivation is homophobia Lewis, I would hope not, but your post does display a certain level of ignorance. LGBT people are not obsessed with sex any more than heterosexual people are. To imply that the article's main emphasis was sex is to miss the point. It's not just about what we do with our genitals (virtual or otherwise) but with the need for community and a safe space in which to express ourselves and organise. Can you see why that might be necessary?

I don't have a problem with you 'organising yourself somewhere safe', as long as it's clearly marked so I don't stumble across it unknowingly. As long as you have the right to congregate in Second Life, I have the right to avoid it. Lewis

Lewis and some people aren't completely put off by mentions of sex. How do you manage to watch television? I mean ferchrissakes you really can't go 5 minutes without some mention of sex or allusion to it. Well unless you are watching childrens programming or highly religious programming. You can't just expect no one else to talk about sex because you don't like hearing about it.

Lewis Wow, I can't imagine putting down a book if the first couple of pages don't grab me. I usually give things more of a chance then that. The first time I read Snowcrash I didn't even know what the hell was going on until half way through the first chapter and I still manaaged to give it a chance and read the whole thing. I'm not a big fan of fiction or literature, but I still read it from time to time. Granted, I have quite a few half-read books, but at least I got past the first couple of pages without completely dismissing it.

Well unless you are watching childrens programming or highly religious programming. Actually I very rarely watch TV, I have more interesting things to do. I do sometimes watch videos or DVD's of my choice though, as it is much more interesting than the regular programming. Lewis

For me it pretty much sums up 90% of the posts you've made. And this post is no exception....rude, sanctimonious and bigoted. And before you even consider taking offense and crying foul over the term bigotted...look it up, it fits you to a TEE.

I have as much right to an opinion as you do. The fact you disagree with mine does not automatically make yours right.

From: Lewis Nerd I don't have a problem with you 'organising yourself somewhere safe', as long as it's clearly marked so I don't stumble across it unknowingly. Happily you've zero authority to make such a request so long as all parties follow both CS and TOS you have no say in it. So no, wont be sewing (photoshoping) a large inverted pink triangle on all my clothing just so you can be sure to avoid me, or even putting up 'warning signs' to let folk know the areas I own are tolerant just so you can be sure to avoid them. From: Lewis Nerd As long as you have the right to congregate in Second Life, I have the right to avoid it. Very true, you'd never have to log into a tolerant and welcoming environment of SL ever again if you didn't want to.

Lewis No one is disputing that Lewis. If anything many of the responses are an attempt to broaden your often narrow-minded horizons with additional information or opinions.
