Now they know who created it - and surely a Linden could view the script and see who it gives the 10% to for final proof - surely that individual can be acted against directly.

However, it's not clear how or if that section of the TOS applies to in-world stuff. If it did, it would be against TOS to transmit in-world advertising to anyone who didn't ask for it - which would mean you couldn't put up billboards, because when viewed they transmit advertising textures to the client without asking.

Except that billboards aren't "transmitted" to the client.

Shouldn't be too hard to knock up a scanner that IMs you the location and owner. I assume they all have the same name?

Depending on how you define the word, I suppose. Technicly, they are.

Billboards advertise tagible (as tangible as they can be in a virtual world) products. This pyramid scheme does NOTHING but replicate itself. You could very well define it as a virus as that is what they do as well. I can't see LL walking the line on ToS interpretation on this one. It's pretty cut and dry.

Yes, they are, the texture is "transmitted" by the asset server to the user's machine.

Well technically yes, but in the past that's not turned out to be an interpretation that LL really support. People have tried to use that clause before for lots of ad builds.

On the other hand, this is a clear pyramid scheme and as such I doubt LL would have any problem in taking action.

Incidentally, if anyone finds one of these in the wild, I'd appreciate it if they'd let me know where - a quick unobtrusive sensor script could let anyone who's worried about someone putting these up but doesn't want to turn on autoreturn at some horrific rate be notified when one appears, and who planted it.

these objects are ARable and if people do file reports the can be expunged and the creator and propigators will face disciplinary action

There's also this theory out there, I dont know where I read about it, it says(I paraphrase)
"The only way a systematic organism (such as a commercial company, a country etc) can grow is if something within it is constantly trying to destroy it and succeeding."

Does anyone else get the impression that we are stuck in such a system?

Think of "The Bush Guy." When people complained, there became more signs. When people stopped complaining, and got used to them, they all disappeared! :p

Thanks Usagi! I've put together a scanner that seems to work. I can give it to anyone who wants it, or post it up here, though countermeasures might be obvious if I post the whole code... what do people think?

I can even make it so that it automatically adds the owner to the ban list for that parcel :)

Right, that seems to work. Either rez the object or take the script out and put it in something else, and it will scan for the money things once per minute and inform you (max once per day for each owner/position) if they appear, with precise location and owner.

IM myself or Usagi for a copy, or I can post it here if anyone wants, or put it in the freebie givers in my home areas.

It's vulnerable to countermeasures but that would require changing the magic money script, and it's not mod. And I have some counter-countermeasures in mind. Hopefully LL will crack down on this before that point anyway. (They'll do that a lot quicker if people go to these locations and AR the items and their owners....)

Is that true? Are all the Bush signs gone?
