From: Weedy Herbst That won't do anything to change anything. Asshats will be asshats. The deal is done. The mentors and greeters will be the only one's permitted. Get with it or over it. Seems to me - and I just went back to look at it again - ReallyRick started this thread asking for opinions. I was giving mine. coco

From: Lecktor Hannibal You didn't answer my question. Because I didn't understand it. I've read some things about having classes on this island, and all kinds of stuff. I know that there are places in SL that offer the same sort of thing. I also know that right now, people get paid $500 for giving a class. If the volunteers are going to be doing all this for free, and in one place, doesn't that rather co-opt the need for others who do it? Or for places that don't have classes maybe, but whose main raison d'etre is to help newbies? coco

Please join up and give some. You will probably like it.

From: Michi Lumin It's just amazing how adamantly some people will fight for the right to maintain the absolute stupidity that goes on in the WA.
It's announced that there may be an island where these ingrates can't access newcomers, and the response is people who are *incredulous* at the idea. Volunteers who WANT to help (Not advertise, by the way) will get first crack at the newbies rather than the bare-assed baboons that have taken over the Welcome Area.
Agenda? -- I've been a Mentor since LONG before I had a successful business in SL. And honestly, I don't *NEED* to use a handful of Mentor experiences as advertisement.
My AGENDA is that I'm tired of the WA filtering OUT decent people and welcoming with -open arms- the jackasses who participate in the same stupidity that festers there.
Yeah yeah I know. My idea of fun isn't the same as their idea of fun and I shouldn't cast judgement.
You know what? All of the goddamn funny sounds have already been played. All of the stupid repetitive squatting animations have already been looped. And a deformed ultra-skinny or ultra-fat grotesque, bald, half naked av with eyes askew and all makeup sliders on max is *NOT ORIGINAL OR FUNNY ANYMORE*.
.. A bunch of people who just DO NOT know when a joke is old, and have a depth of wit shallower than most puddles.
It's time for a new era around here. For everyone who thinks that "badger badger badger" is STILL HILARIOUS, there are OTHER MMO's that will welcome you with open arms. Couldn't agree more.

From: ReallyRick Metropolitan This so called "Help Island" would be a central location that new residents could go to get help with all aspects of beginning Second Life. One of the the motivations behind its creation, as I understand it, is to have new residents bypass the Welcome Area. "Help Island" would be acessable to brand new residents, Liasons, Mentors, and Greeters ONLY.
I was born yesterday and somehow missed having access to this Help Island. How can I get back there?

Unfortunately, you cannot go back. Yesterday was the first day of operation and of course it's not without it's bugs. Don't let that get you down though, because in-world you will find numerous opportunities for hands on learning.

Aw did some of those WA griefers get their little feelings hurt? I am so broken hearted I just don't know what to say. I, and a few other Mentors, are telling the new citizens about the WA. I advise them to go there if they want to see how NOT to act in Second Life.

While I totally agree that segregating newbies from the imbeciles that hang out at the Welcome Area is great, there were also quite a few genuine helpers there that are not Mentors or Greeters. Personally I spent 3 or 4 SL nights a week helping newbs, answering questions, etc. This was at a time when most of the "official" Mentors and Greeters were sleeping. And yes, even at 4am SL time, people are joining SL for the first time. So I guess my concern would be that for those that join SL at a time when the vast majority of SL'ers are asleep, means that those that live outside US timezones may miss out on getting some form of a welcome and help now that they go to an exclusive area.
On a different note, just how long does it take to be accepted as an official Mentor or Greeter?

Perhaps the fact that people would be joing at 3:00 in the morning suggests that there might also be a volunteer or two around. At any rate they will just get their greeting upon entering the rest of the SL grid, much as now.

At any rate they will just get their greeting upon entering the rest of the SL grid, much as now. Actually MaryLee, 3am SL time is when many Europeans and Australians would be joining as that is either their morning or their evening. From what I understand once they enter the main grid, they miss out on Help Island, some-one correct me if I am wrong. If they do miss out on it, then there is groups of new resis that are missing out on that initial help. There is already a strong viewpoint that Europeans and Australians are disadvantaged in getting the full SL experience simply because of their timezone differences. Having that view commence at their very first day in SL is not all that conducive to having decent retention rates amongst Europeans and Australians.

Midnight, it can take a while sometimes. I think it took 3 weeks for me. I know someone else who's been waiting a bit also. It may be that between 1.7 and getting Help Island online, Jeska is just overwhelmed at the moment. There is still a huge need for Mentors and helpers at the WA. Newbies right off Orientation Island aren't the only ones with questions, people weeks and even months old need help sometimes too. There is a need for everyone who has the graciousness to devote their time to helping others and the WA will always be the place people end up once they enter SL. Help Island is an option, not a requirement. So far we've seen a lot of people head right into SL and we've also seen a few folks that take a day or more to leave Help Island. It is a calm place simmering with creative energy and full of Mentors and Greeters, a fabulous environment for those who want personal attention. Nothing really has changed here, except adding an extra step in the process for new residents who want some extra help. And maybe re-invigorating a lot of Mentors who have wandered away from the fold

Thanks Isablan. That sort of puts my mind to rest quite a lot. I wasn't aware that it is an optional step, and that many are heading straight into SL. I was at the Welcome Area early hours of SL morning, and there was no newbies there at all last night when I was there, just the usual array of moronic chat, sounds, etc., so I assumed that newbs were all at Help Island. Guess it was just a slow morning/night for new resis.

Neither was I aware that it is an optional step. (Optional, in the meaning that they don't automatically go there.) That is good. So - they go to Orientation Island first, then they know they can go to the Help Island, and that they won't get a chance to go back if they don't do it now? coco

Unfortunately at the moment the signage is not clear that Help Island is a “one time only” offer. Currently, only one OI sim has a clear, direct path to Help Island, three other nearby OI sims can see Help Island and you can fly to it, but the sims need to be turned so that their Exit Pavilion faces Help Island and the option is made clear. This is still in beta testing, mind you, so there are a lot of things that still need to be done.
There is also a certain learning curve as we figure out how to best make this work to achieve the desired results of stronger new resident retention. So far, what we are doing is great for those who know what they are getting into when they sign up. What we are going to need soon is some feedback from residents who came through OI and why they did or did not choose to head over to Help Island and how we can improve the experience.
