M Linden was brought in to fatten up the Linden Lab coffers pure and simple.
You can see that from his 1 year as CEO. I believe the goal is to have a 2nd crack at trying to bring in middle size RL businesses in. The Educators might not be that profitable to LL, but it makes for nice PR to the outside world...and as bait to show the platform's credibility. Think why all the other policy changes regarding Mainland in last 9 months! - Culling of Ad farms - Policy against small parcel cutting, doughnut cutting, rotating signs - Moles laying down more public roads - Nice controlled areas like Bay City, Nauticulus, Blake Sea - Now the dumping of Adult content (The decision has already been made, these 5 threads are just a nice smokescreen to show the outside world that "LL cares about its community, it's customers".....of course it's a lot of bull!) - Next on the "hit list" will be something to do regarding Land traffic counts, to effectively nullify the use of Traffic Bots This beautifying of the Mainland is not being done for it's residents which have been using it for the last 5 years or so......this is for RL businesses to set up shop. Regarding Phillip's statement the merger of the Teen Grid....... LL are setting themselves up for a major PR disaster!! If you think the European media (most of it exaggerated) made such a hoohah over a couple of instances of age play which did involve RL adults at the end of the day.......just imagine the field day they are going to have when real kids are allowed to mingle with adults. Potential paedophiles hang out in PG areas, they don't care for normal "Adult" content........at the moment they might get their kicks in seeing child like AV's in PG areas. Where will RL kids be hanging out? The verification processes will harm the economy in general not just "Adult" Content and Land providers".....it will filter all the way down to Mature Content. Many casual users who normally login in for their "Adult" lifestyle simply won't bother going through the process of verifying. Some European countries are known not to want its citizens handing out details like Health insurance No's, Passport numbers, Driving Licenses details to 3rd party sites on the Internet. Some SL residents from other countires experience difficulty registering Credit Card details. It also has soical consequenses too......supposing you have a Couple that don't own or rent Land......one is verified the other isn't? Where do they go for their "Adult" activities? What about employees in the "Adult" sector.....strippers, pole dancers, security? ........the list of people effected is exhaustive! It's a shame that LL choses to "Bite the hand that feeds them"......but it will come back to bite them hard, There was no doubt that LL had a profitable model already by creating a Virtual 3D world largely inhabited by "Joe Public"folk.....but now they want more....hence M.Linden's role! There will be a void....which an alternative 3D Platform could fill one day (they can see this model is profitable) , with all these policy changes dating back to 2007, there are enough disillusioned folk ...that would leave at the drop of hat, should a viable alternative arrive........and slam the door behind them! |

Class of 2006 - loss of trust
03-15-2009 20:29
"[W]e cannot play the role of arbitrating personal grievances or defining behavioral standards. This is particularly important as Linden Lab becomes more international. We don’t want to force a California-centric set of rules on the virtual world...." Well it seems their grand ideals can be spouted and then forgotten when it darn well suits them, Leaving those of us who pay the tier, buy stuff, invent stuff and put a lot of our life and time in it to watch it fall to pieces around us. How does one trust a company who says one thing and then when it suits them, they do an about face and do just the opposite? I also vividly remember LL announcing that we had nothing to fear regarding gambling. I wish I had the exact quote, but the gist of it was that SL was immune from US internet gambling laws. Again, we sighed with relief as LL reassured us that there would be no change in gambling policy. Then came 2007 and bitter disappointment. All the reassurances given only weeks before were abandoned as Linden Lab slammed the gearshift into reverse. Add the degradation of grid stability, the mismanagement of land supply and the VAT fiasco, and the damage to LL's reputation was so great that Philip Rosedale had to step down as CEO. The company's reputation slowly began to recover under the leadership of Mark Kingdon. His first goal, rightly, was to rebuild SL's technological infrastructure. Yes, the openspace pricing model was a strategic failure and, yes, there was a second round of mainland supply mismanagement, but, thank all the gods, at least LL were not bungling policy anymore. The micro-parcel issue was resolved within reason. LL seemed to be developing the ability to handle complex issues...then bang! We are back to square one with a crude policy on social behavior. Trust evaporates. What, then, shall we make of ANY policy statement? We won't combine the Teen Grid with the Main Grid. Really? What will you say tomorrow? We don't wish to interfere in people's social relationships. Really? But you seek to classify certain types of behavior and relegate a section of the population by force to a separate geographical territory. We shall remain a private company; we have no intention of going public. Really? Who's to say you won't announce an IPO in a week? The great irony here is that as REPUTATION is the most valuable asset of any inworld business, LL's reputation is such that it would not survive inworld. _____________________

Harrassment from Gors and whores will be fine. I can use that against them. [well, I guess we just did, in fact. The Lindens are reading this.] Don't feed the troll. ^^ http://www.salagir.com/gfx/troll-web.jpg |

i know there's a lot already written - much i haven't been able to catch up upon. but what are the chances of an 'sl filterguard', like the 'webguards' so common out there? i know that for such a thing to work, all need to try to make at least elementary compliance; i just wondered if, in the end, an elementary parental control could be used to safeguard content, considering 3d spatial/sight aspects... how much 'visual muting' occurs between the pg/mature/age-verified boundaries?
i haven't tested out every variation myself yet with alts or anything, so wondering what all precautions will actually be effective... would elevating a portion of my store, on mature land, and gating it as age-verified, be enough to avoid a move of a portion of content that would fit an 'adult' category? _____________________

sorry no now i do meet all of those requirements. for custom and Fed Law so If i felt the need to register I would have no problem being a registerd member of that tribe If you were an Indian, you would definitely feel the need to register. Anyone who ever knew an Indian would know that. There is absolutely nothing that is more important to us than our tribes. I'm actually being real nice to you here for the sake of some other fakes who may be looking on. You need to be careful who you claim to belong to in Indian Country. You don't want to get caught lying about that in RL. You could get the crap beat out of you. |

Back on topic - This is a totally bass-ackwards idea of removing adult activities, products, roleplays, etc., into a crowded area. Why not create "Squeaky Clean Sim" for those who do not want to view, participate, purchase, etc. anything that remotely is beyond a G rating and prohibit them from ever entering the rest of the grid? Sounds more workable as the vocal minority can never shove their morals down everyone's throats. Let them stay in a totally cordoned off area by themselves where they won't have to come in contact with anything that might offend the morals they wear on their sleeves. |

Just as a reminder to people trying to wade through these threads, you can click (on the left) on a persons name to see their public profile. In there, there's a bit that says "add this person to your ignore list."
If you click on that, you don't have to see their posts any more. It's a big time saver sometimes. |

If you are an Indian, you know the drill. I will ask you to prove it by declaring what tribe you are verifiably enrolled with, and call you a wannabe fake if you can't. This forum isn't the place to do that. Thanks Excuse me Nany - I know Minx and I stand by her and what she says. I've known Minx from another site for quite some time (not personally; however, I do know her and know what she is about) - so do not disrespect someone you know nothing about as far as what their heritage or by calling them a fake!!! |
