It also makes you wonder if maybe current rules were properly enforced if most of the new measures would be necessary in the first place.

Yeah, exactly.

As I've mentioned before, I personally don't care much for the adult side of SL; I usually search with Mature unchecked, and most of the mainland I own is in PG sims. And the PG searches and the PG sims have always been full of mature (and, under the new definitions, even very much adult) content. Why was that never enforced? And why should anyone believe that just by adding a third rating, "Adult", things will suddenly be enforced then?

I have to double check as I want to be 100% sure. I'll come back to this before the end of the day.

Yes, if a parcel is on an adult region, it will only show up in adult searches.

Linden Labs is a business, and when you attend a business meeting, you make your point professionally, and stay on point. That isn't what happened here. This whole matter is blueprint of how not to get your way in any business situation. Come on ... a giant penis, and comparisons to Nazis? Threats to leave, by the same people that threatened to leave a few months back?

+1.

While some of the protesting is amusing, the signal to noise ratio in this thread is pretty bad.

A few important questions are going unanswered.

What about renters on estates that don't convert to Adult status? Will they be offered a chance to buy an equivalent parcel in Ursula to what they're renting now?

Will there be some refinement of the search filter? There doesn't seem to be a distinction between PG and Mature language? Is that going to be addressed? If a business is declared Mature, it seems reasonable that the language required to advertise it be available for Mature searches, and filtered only from PG.

The best protest is a sober and solid one. Also all opinions need airing in peace, slamming people as bigots when they are at odds is the end of any feeling of solidarity.

Agreed. Every time I hear people bring up nazis and such, I cringe as a little bit of our credibility melts away...

Lets hope its interesting :)

Hope it was .... yet another linden thing about this a lot of us were unable to access because they insist on using voice.

Press Conference

If anyone was at the press conference, can you give a synopsis here? I tried to attend the noon SLT discussion online, but I'm not allowed streaming anything at work, so I had to duck out.

Hi Blondin,

I have a question, who will be held responsible for children on here?

Ex: A child gets an adult skin and engages in adult behavior and suffers damage.

I'm not a business nor a business person (although I do photography as an art in SL-sometimes people pay me) I also think those rules of business subtract from everyone's humanity. So I'm more interested in what's driving the person-who they really are and what's makes them unique than all that IMO professional facade.

Chaos may appear more threatening than order but you might choose order to such an extent that you die of boredom. Someone says in that we are alive at all we have to risk the challenge of fully being alive.

I just got a copy of this in NC.

----------------------
Jack linden claimed that there are only 10 or so folk objecting to the new changes. Please let them know how you feel. If you support the changes accept them and do nothing. If you don't support it then please vote on below link.
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-2727
----------------------

Is this true? Does he really believe that only 10 or so people object to all this? I find that hard to swallow looking at 487 pages in THIS forum alone. Heck, the very first forum on this was closed and locked after 2 days and 65+ pages.

I've seen something similar in Star Wars Galaxies. The people rose up and raised their multitudes of fists at changes they did not want. Yet Sony Online Entertainment went through with their diabolical plan.

In two months they lost over 2/3 of their subscribers. Jack, count me as one of the so-called "10 or so folk" who object to this. This is going to hurt SL badly

I wonder if anyone at The Lab dug their heals in on those ones. ;-)

Their heels were dug in and their decisions made long before word one was mentioned about it. Every 6 months, the command staff at LL shoot themselves somewhere by doing something stupid like this. And not once do they ask us what we think or if there's a better way to handle the situation. LL already aimed the figurative gun and began pulling the trigger long before any mention of this was made in the blogs.

The last self-inflicted injury was serious. This one promises to be severe and perhaps even fatal.

At least a month, month and a half. We've been listening and have realized just how hard this move is going to be. We're trying to come up with solutions / alternatives to the idea of 'Pick up your Prims and Move'. The tickets will be created when we know exactly how this process will work.

------------------------------------------------
Seems pretty obvious, Blondin, each object has a location on the grid, do a database script that edits the location to the new sim. The owner may have to do rotation and adjustment once its there to fit the new location better, but at least it will be there in the first place, and in the right relative location to all the other parts.

This solves the problem of items owned by multiple owners, some of whom may not be active any longer. It also solves the problem of linking beyond the current link distance limits for any large builds ( over about 30-40 m in size).

I'm thinking maybe go to the center of your parcel or sim...face north then just hit return items.....then if your new parcel is pretty similar go to the same coords and drag the cluster folder from lost and found...it should rez skyboxs and all close to where they were...but rezzing 4000+ prims at once may crash something....lol....dunno but im gonna try it

Press Conference keypoints

I'm paraphrasing as i'm listening
jack, cyn and kend linden and some dude called peter
voice and transcript will be available "soon" (me: lol)

cyn does a recap:
who she is and a recap of her cv (me: yawn)

objective of this: to provide more controls over user experiences

drivel...

yet another redundant reference to usecases (me: doesn't anyone there understand what they actually are???ffs)
maturity (adult, mature and PG) names are not set in stone. (me:looks like they're having issues with the 3 terms) it seems they're not "comfortable" with them
pg definition will be unchanged
filtering and restricting access to adult region and changing search
involves mainland rezoning
improving search capabilities (me:lol)
defined verified as either account or age
majority of active residents are verified and won't have to do anything
new continent being created for adult content - for currently mainlanders only
private regions asked to flag but not to move. "The residents won't be asked to move"
extensive investigation into amount of content and a small amount of adult content identified "comparatively"
not about merging with teen grid - "not a part of current thinking" however it could enable it "not about pushing adult content out of second life"

Initial announcement made. They're really valued our input. "it's been a great experience for all of us"

The draft definitions have been published but "there's room for some additional conversations" before they're done

1.23 to become the main viewer at the end of June - then the transition period

during transition the regions will be re-rated
goal is to "make this as easy as possible, with as little disruption as possible" "this a part of our growth and we want to contribute to the wider community and the community of second life"

floor opened to questions

profoky: how was the quantity identified?
jack: survey of mainland content via eyeballing. also search analysis - terms and hits
they found the no of parcels that had adult content on was low
some areas had more than others
"about 5%"
50-70 regions initially (!!!)

isnt this the open collar item thats devastating the adult collar content makers? just curious.

Opencollar hasn't put a scratch into my collar business. I would hardly call it 'devastating'. :) They cater to a whole different class of customer.

I'll do a semi transcript then

A million thank yous!

The sad irony is a resident will produce a transcript of a LL press conference long before they do themselves.

I can't get into metaworld2... for some reason their flash-based video software uses up more CPU time than the Second Life client, and my laptop was overheating.

So far, what LL has said is pretty much a repeat of their earlier blogs. "We're doing you guys a favor, it's all good, this is what you want - trust us."

Both point one, and point two are highly suspect.

Please don't mistake my meaning here ... I'm not sticking up for them at all. What I'm talking about is the tactics of the opposition, which I see as lame ... and I'm being kind.

The opposition tactic here, is the same one that was used with the Open Space situation. It failed you then, and it's failing you now.

The Lab isn't responding ... fine ... maybe it is time to switch tactics!!!!!

Suggested name for the New Continent

Considering how many here seem to feel this project by LL is a form of "banishment", perhaps the continent should be name "Eudemon". :P
