From: Phil Deakins Well, it's the 30th today - the last day before the new rules come into effect. And Jack still hasn't posted an update. If he doesn't do it, I'll be darned annoyed because this thread will have been a complete waste of everyone's time. Even something as simple as, "We read everything and appreciate your input, but there are no changes" would be better than nothing. No post at all feels like being totally ignored - and after Jack himself asked for the discussion.
Incidentally, 8m high is pretty big, and could still be a blight on the lanscape - depending on where it placed. I agree with you Phil. I reread the title to this thread: Mainland Discussion with Jack Linden Talk about the SL Mainland with Jack Linden I clearly states "with Jack Linden" I do hope he will post an update to what LL plans to do starting tomorrow. Im new to the forums too, but Im not getting a good feeling about this. I sure hope I am wrong.

/me jumps up and down, chanting "ONE MORE DAY!" From: Yeso Kidd I do hope he will post an update to what LL plans to do starting tomorrow. Im new to the forums too, but Im not getting a good feeling about this. I sure hope I am wrong. For two months, he's been starving his people and showing them pictures of ad farms superimposed over juicy steaks. I'll tell ya' what he's going to do tomorrow. Tomorrow, he unleashes them onto the mainland.

Okay, so now what are we supposed to do?
10-01-2008 02:25
In this and other threads I keep reading that everybody else's adfarmers have cleaned up their act, but in some of the adfarm-infested sims where I have land, there are still many flagrant violations.
There's certainly no advantage in making extra work for Concierge, especially right now when efficiency is so important. So a little direction might be mutually beneficial.
Should we:
1.) Just hold off until further notice while Concierge does a sweep on its own? 2.) Submit support tickets listing geographic clusters of violations that might be efficiently handled as a group? 3.) Submit individual ARs for each separate violation?
or some other course of action?
Right now, I'm guessing the focus is on "letter of the law" violations. There are dozens more parcels in these sims that add to the blight in one way or another, some more than others. If we knew a bit more about the actual clean-up process, we might make better judgments about what to report right now and what to let slide for a while, until Concierge gets a chance to catch up with the most urgent problems.

Short and Sweet

Its actually quite easy for LL to make a first cut. Look at land for sale on the map. Many sims with roadbeds clearly show ad farms and land cutting. When land cutters take the edges of roadbeds cut them into small plots and put them for sale at rediculous prices, the attempt of extortion is as plain as day. There are many other examples of ad farms, land cutting, and extortion, but following roadbeds is as easy as it gets.
Ad farmers and land cutters want to pretend they aren't doing what everyone knows they are. Glad to see that LL is going to address them. They will melt away proclaiming their innocence, but they WILL melt away. But.... they will continue to make money circumventing rules and standards some other way. Then they will complain and complain once there excesses in behavior are addressed again.
The bottom line is: most of the people this is directed at have made money cutting land for whatever reason. Take your money and move on. Some of us enjoy the learning experiences of SecondLife and the interaction with creative and inventive people. The invention of land cutting has run its course.

Patience, it's only been a few hours on day 1.
10-01-2008 04:43
This will not be instantaneous. Figure how many AR's have been massively filed by how many people, it generally takes at LEAST until the start of the business day to even get notified of them. Figure too the few Lindens that are the active estate management that have to receive them, review them, act on them, and respond to them. There are possibly thousands of ARs that flooded them particuarly some who may have accidentally or deliberatly replicated them numerous times. Also remember the ad farmers/advertisers etc were also looking for feedback from all this so they were probably not in a hurry to start going through all of their parcels to comply with something "somewhat tentatively" up in the air.. the policy already changed once, what would have guaranteed it from not changing again?

From: Argent Stonecutter I sure hope not. I have frequently worked on cooperative builds with my neighbors that involved builds extending over multiple parcels, each contributing part... and if we couldn't overlap our builds this kind of thing would be basically impossible. I don't see where this would be a problem. It's consentual. If you or your neighbor don't AR then there would be no reason to address it. Also they could probably see any access rights settings for either of your properties.

The message I was responding to said "builds should be automatically removed if they encroach on neighboring parcels." Automatic removal sounded like a change in the way overlapping prims are dealt with by the sim, and goes a lot further than Linden Labs response to an AR, and would break a LOT of existing builds. A followup clarified that he didn't mean that it should actually be an automatic process.

Well here we are!!!
10-01-2008 07:19
I hope I got all the ads down never can tell. Im sure someone out there will find and AR them for me. I tried what can I say, if u see one that violates policy let me know and ill remove it.. Its nice to see that since this announcement land prices seemed to have sunk. And for all the bot runners and tree huggers who bought up the cheap plots us cutters cut the gravy train is over. Great way to spite yourself! With every death there is a rebirth, we'll see. Anyway im still here(for now LOL). Hope 2 be around another 2.5 years too. If SL makes it that long....

From: HATENALLDEM Weezles . Anyway im still here(for now LOL). Hope 2 be around another 2.5 years too. If SL makes it that long.... Robo I am sure that a multi million dollar company with the security resources to acquire all your ISP Log in addresses, along with your associates log in info (partners in crime) will work long and hard to make sure that parasites such as yourself never set foot in a virtual world internet environment again, and share this information with potential victims of your abuse. Hope for something more realistic, such as; relocating to another continent, but even then your name is still Mud. Thanks for this opportunity to address the individual(s) responsible for our victory over greed, and ignorance on this day! Oh, and trust you/me, I highly doubt that Second Life is not going to make it with it's current, and ever growing booming populations, or did you miss that Blog? LOL! See Ya, and Don't Let the Door Hit Ya Sincerely, Bushido Contepomi

Use New Report Abuse Tools
10-01-2008 09:36
Just FYI:
If you fly to the ad banner/farm/problem maker spot...click Report Abuse in the software's menu...then fill out the information...using the new (just updated it seems) drop down menu...you can get them to remove ad farms. I did this and *bang* my unsightly ad farmer neighbors things disappears over night. Make to include a snapshot (an option) as well as click the little arrow then the ad banner...for the lindens to get the right object/name. I wish Jack would put out a big note on this as well...but, it seems they have *indeed* started removing objects...
I'm happy to see the ugly 'particle whore' ad banner gone from my sim...it was such an eye sore!
Now, go and start reporting !!!!

They just need to establish another way of detecting objects than the location of their crossmarks

From: Holocluck Henly I agree. It wasn't a realistic suggestion. They just need to establish another way of detecting objects than the location of their crossmarks OT for this thread, but this came up way back during the Havoc4 testing. To the server, prims are just coordinates and numbers and there's no practical way for the server to know if the edge of a prim overlaps land that it's not 'allowed' to be on; only the dead centre of the prim is known. (And I think, this is further obscured in linksets). Anyhow, it was postulated that since the bounding-box of an object is known to the physics engine, and the havoc4 bounding boxes were supposed to be pretty accurate, along with h4 having good mechanisms for handling object/object intrusion, there was mention that pseudo-bounding-boxes could be created for parcels, and they could use the physics engine to solve these encroachment issues where only a bit of a build overhangs. From all that, it seems that a solution to partial-prim encroachment is doable using mostly-existing tools, but they may not have persued this any more than just discussing the theory, at least not yet. Back on topic... I've been trying to keep up with this thread and it seems to me that Jack hasn't posted anything here in several days. Have I just missed his recent contributions, or is he on vacation or something? -Atashi

Aw.. I just noticed that Jack changed his office hours to Thursdays at 11am. Was hoping to hear what, if any, news there was in about 30 minutes. Guess there's no news today.

Once more

From: JubJub Forder See the hypocricy?
Rare occassions? what is your definition of rare? tens? hundreds? Protest signs and informative? And thats not advertising your opinion? How many on ads on ad plots did you have out Rem? Do you even know? You state your signs are down - Have you been around and asked all the people you handed signs and blockers to - to take them down too?
You claim your signs worked? - yet advertising on ad plots is still allowed. The Lindens seek to minimize their impact.. and that includes YOUR signs. YOU were part of the problem Rem, and I find the worst hypocritical aspect of it all is you know it, else your signs wouldn't have come down. Ok, there's a lull while the AR s churn through, so I will take this opportunity to set the record straight with you JubJub. I have never been for the elimination of outdoor advertising. Read my posts or talk to Gnusense and Shimada if that concept still doesn't sink in. I was, and still am, opposed to the kind of spam adverts that you used and still seem bent on defending. But it is a moot point now, since LL really seems to be stepping up to the plate. The panels I put up were in response to the degradation the towers caused to the landscape - you may say they were just as bad, but that is a minority opinion from the feedback I got from neighbors of the towers. (oh and btw, 99% of my panels were in fact regular prims - 0.01 X 4 X 10, transparent on the inside and phantom - not mega prims). My signs are down because their purpose was accomplished. So yes, I still feel that their presence helped educate people, bring them to helping eliminate the blight of ad towers, and spur the changes that are now in effect. They were never intended to be long term and I enjoyed taking them away more than i enjoyed installing them. I my mind, they were a necessary, if not ideal, technique to effect change. So call me a hypocrite if you want, I really don't care. I do have the hope that someday you and I can get past this hostility and have a laugh about all this. I wish you well.

Thank you. Fast? You're not kidding. I flew over to my region's local ad farm a bit ago and started AR'ing the plots. I only had done THREE of them before Socrates Linden showed up and went to work on the WHOLE thing. All gone now! Now THAT'S fast! THANK YOU!!

From: Wuz Crosby (run-on sentence)... Punctuation is your friend. Really. As for the discernible content, I don't think you quite understand the nature of the problem being solved (or maybe you do and are just trolling.. it is sometimes hard to tell with "first post" accounts). If there is a lawsuit, I will be happy to contribute to any amicus curiae filings on behalf of Linden Lab. Anyway, if you're really leaving, good luck in your future ventures!
