I came here because SL DID NOT have voice

I have found nothing but great Freedom threw Voice in a virtual world. I was in there.com for about 2 years, but came to SL for obvious reasons. The first thing that was EXTREMELY difficult to over come was the lack of voice in SL!
And although I sympathize with the creator of this Thread, I think its unfair to want to restrict the REST of the WORLD of such a wonderful thing, simply because you may not be able to partake.
*Voice will NOT change Second life it will simply enhance it.
*Voice is NOT going to stop text. With over 100 avis talking in the same night club (there.com) Text was just as active and intermingled, running as a parallel form of communication.
*Voice is not used all the time. Even having voice enabled doesn’t mean you use it all the time. Depending on surroundings in RL, you may choose to type a specific reply. Or even not feel like talking at all that day. But I want to at least have that choice!
We are all citizens in this Second Life, and will not judge a person by his form of communication but the quality of his character…
(And those are my two cents..)

I'm not deaf nor mute but I have no desire or intent when it comes to using the voice features. It will simply destroy the illusion many try and create by inserting their nasally, grating, crappy voice. Already I spend most of my time with the audio off, least I run across some DJ, who sounds so pathetic, they should have their voice box removed and mouth sewn shut.

From: BigAngel Bishop We are all citizens in this Second Life, and will not judge a person by his form of communication but the quality of his character… You've been around long enough to know of the debates around verified vs unverified accounts and paid vs non-paid accounts and the future age verified vs non-age verified, sexual vs non-sexual, and a few dozen more. People will judge on whether someone will voice with them or not, and people will judge based on the sound of someone's voice. It would be quite unnatural if they didn't really. You have the right mindset, but it's just not realistic. We're all shallow and judgemental in one way or another when it comes down to it .

Yep.pettiness seems to be the one SL feature that never gets Borked.

I love the idea of hearing people online. I'm sure people who can't hear won't like it as much, but that's why it's better to be able to hear. Sorry if that's not an option for you, but why is it we should hold ourselves back because you're not as able as we are?

From: Cunundrum Alcott Alot of people have told me, Sharon, don't worry people are still going to type. Not everyone is going to use voice. But I'm doubtfull, in a few months everyone will see how much easier it is to click the microphone button or just leave it on instead of how cumbersome typing is.
On There.Com the only people who type are those without the ability i.e. non-paying members and those with dissabilities. Every hearing challenged person I met felt frustrated, angry, and often depressed at not being able to communicate in a world where....guess what....that was the biggest activity.
I strongly strongly urge the Lindens to ask those in the game who are hearing impaired their opinions and concerns. Im typing impaired and no matter how hard i try it takes me forever to get an untypo'd sentence out of my fingers (dyslexia). If you dont want to use voice, dont use it. Some people have trouble with reading and writing and voice will be a huge help for them.

I think I can accept Voice. I won't use it, and if other people are using it and don't type so I know what's going on, then I don't care, I'll just leave.
The main thing I'm opposed to is that Voice and Windlight are yet MORE features which represent hours of work that could have been spent of fixing or improving small things, or working on PERFORMANCE. Argh!

I get the concept that Second Life should be able to have voice even if deaf people cant participate. But the way you say it is really shallow and inconsiderate.

I'm not a Luddite, I'm a realest, the fabric and feel of Second Life will change with the mainstream introduction of voice. Besides, the only people who will really benefit from voice are the Brazilians and Italians. Who think they can through typing, convey their accent by simply saying "I Brazilian" or "I Italian" and cause women to swoon and fall right into bed with them.
I don't want to see you on a web cam, I don't want to hear your voice, I don't want to know about you and your real life. Give me your avatar, typed text and low lag, and I'll be a very happy Second Life resident.
Oh, and props to French guys. I've yet to see one use the assertion that they are French as all the reason a woman needs to get naughty with them. I guess the Brazilians and Italians are just that pathetic.

The moment we are forced to use webcams I *WILL* model my dragon-head in Maya and use that as my cam-input instead. Just to fuck with you all, buhahahaha!!

I shudder at hearing all the almost changed post pubescent voices saying. "You're pretty. Wanna Fuck?.. ... *unintelligible shouting*......NOT NOW MOM!!! I"M BUSY!!."

I hear and speak just fine and I will not be using voice at all in SL, either to listen or communicate myself. Bad idea. I guess I will just miss out on what some people have to say, and that's quite ok with me. I don't use it in other games. It ruins my day to have a bunch of strangers talking in my living room

With as many pissy, whining, morons as I have seen in this thread (not all but some), I am absolutely giddy in the knowledge that I will most likely never see or speak to any of them.
This thread is as useless as tits on a bull.
Oh and before anyone decides to tell me my OPINION is wrong, a little factoid...
Opinions are never wrong. Facts can be sure, however, personal views are never right or wrong.
I wish most people would see that before personally attacking each other over points of view and opinions.

Exactly! Besides I doubt there would be anything someone has to say to me that would be worthy of my precious Drow ears. * winks and grins *

I can understand those with hearing difficulties not wanting voice as it discriminates against them but what of those with reading difficulties. Voice will open up SL to people that have limited movement that stops them from typing much , those with dyslexia? There is always 2 sides to a coin Oh and I am Gorean and I am looking forward to voice

From: Windsweptgold Wopat I can understand those with hearing difficulties not wanting voice as it discriminates against them but what of those with reading difficulties. Voice will open up SL to people that have limited movement that stops them from typing much , those with dyslexia? There is always 2 sides to a coin Oh and I am Gorean and I am looking forward to voice I see this reversal of logic a lot. Can you please tell me what it is exactly that people who: 1) Cannot see 2) Cannot type 3) Cannot read have been doing and/or getting out of SL since it began? Please, I'm not trying to be a bitch. I just see this whole line of reasoning as absurd. Why? Some people cannot see. SL and its attractions are entirely based on visuals. They cannot even see other avies to speak to. Or see anything to speak about. Why would they ever have joined? Don't attempt to draw similarities between SL and RL here because the default communication in RL has always been voice, and nobody is trying to introduce a new method in RL that threatens to become the default by exclusion of those who will not adopt it. Some people cannot type. Communication has been typed since the system came online. Entirely. These people would not have been able to communicate if completely unable to enter typed text in one way or another. Knowing this, why would they ever have joined? Some people cannot read. Communication has been typed since inception, meaning these people have never understood the communications of others. Knowing the world's communication was typed out, why would these people have joined? As an addendum to this we have the argument that people who don't have mics or prefer typing can use text to speech programs, so that's not an excuse to not voice. There are also speech to text programs for people who cannot type, so what's the 'excuse' for not typing all this time? Note: I apologize in advance if there are thousands upon thousands of people who have been struggling through SL for years while fitting in one of the descriptions above. I applaud your perseverance and determination considering the fact that you've stayed for years given exactly zero indication that things would change until recently. Please forgive me for saying that the use of your existence as a justification for invalidating the opinions of people against voice is ridiculous on its face because I haven't heard a single sight-impaired, typing incapable, or completely illiterate SL user weigh in. On anything. In-forum or in-world. Ever. If one ever does, I will be first in line to listen.
