From: Michael Bigwig Ya, after the fact, when I was home, I thought about that. Still, how are we to know sometimes whether something is a new post, or an old one--I really don't make it a habit to read the dates on posts. But I guess that's just me.
I thought it was a new post, that took off. So I replied.
I didn't see an update...usually, I don't scan a few pages back before replying to the OP... Hmm .. these threads on these rarely used boards though are often necro-posts. The OP revived her own thread to give an update. The update itself is pretty interesting .. From: Cunundrum Alcott Well after a year (and I was surprised this thread is still alive), and having talked to several other deaf players; voice has definitely had a tremendous impact on me (our) enjoyment of the game. Of course were a very tiny minority.
One thing about some dissabilities. You can be just about anything you want to be in SL, however, if your deaf your deaf in the game also.

From: EyeInStein Abel Probably the best comment in this thread. "Newsflash: there still is no voice, and never has been. You can't give up what you never had in the first place, genius." He never saw it hit him.
Which proves the point I can see here. Voice can mute text chat. Those who can't help but love to hear themselves talk will miss the shy intelligence of the very rare gems. Well voice is here EyeInSten and as for it muting text chat it does not. I for one can do both and at the same time. Often I will be in voice in IM and typing in open chat. As for it causing lag that i have not found but what i do find does is the silly body lights ppl seem to need to wear. It makes me wonder do these people thing the sun shines out their ****

I am surprised LL have continued with the voice updates and fixes. Initially I thought I would use it all the time...when you type the same things over and over and over as I have to in SL trust me I am sick to death of typing. I would welcome the opportinuty to "talk" to customers. But then not everyone has their voice enabled and infact I would say around 5% of people I see in the store use voice. I know people who hate it on a personal level because they see SL as RP, escapism and voice makes them feel threatened that their fantasy will be ruined..I think initially they feared we would all forced to use it. Once it became apparent that wasnt the case ppl just fell into 2 groups..those that do and those that dont.
I believe LL push it for corporate businesess , they push the concept of education and businesess using SL to have confrence meetings with staff from around the globe so I believe voice is only really pushed for the marketing side of business clients really.
There.com was all about voice...ppl had to pay extra for it and we did...it was "normal" and if you didnt have it you were labled a low life noob..funny how different environments have different social rules..

I wonder if these people have heard of Global warming the heat put out from some of these, hell i have had to run and get my sunglasses to protect my eyes from the glare. I wonder do they use them to get attention from a rather plain looking AV ?

Wow this thread is still alive... Things change, they did at least for me. I use voice almost every day now. And I love it

I've used it a few times, usually to demonstrate it in a class, or to help someone set it up right. But I find that I jump right back to text as soon as I can. The lack of real time audio feedback (you can't hear yourself on your headphones, the way you can with a telephone) is very disturbing. I feel like I'm talking to myself. (This isn't the fault of SL voice, by the way, but simply the way almost all computer headsets are made).
A few times, there's been some delay, and then I can hear what I just said, but about a half second later. That's worse. I start listening to myself and taper off into silence after about four syllables.

(This isn't the fault of SL voice, by the way, but simply the way almost all computer headsets are made). You should be able to turn your mic on on your computers local sound card controls. Just be careful, because it might play the mic back through your speakers if you're not using headphones. The feedback will be a nightmare. (>_< From: someone A few times, there's been some delay, and then I can hear what I just said, but about a half second later. That's worse. I start listening to myself and taper off into silence after about four syllables. That usually only really happens if someone has their mic open and they're listening on speakers. You're getting their mic picking up your voice on their speakers. Check for additional green lines while you're talking and see if the person understands how push-to-talk works. Or... Suggest some headphones. When I've done it, I used a combination of PTT and headphones. (^_^)y ( Still dealing with anxiety and stuttering though. (>_< )
