From: Hypatia Callisto I'm getting my darts out.
I actually did change my notecards to remove closeup pictures of genitalia in my skins. That is mostly what I worry about... skin sellers being able to do their business. They say its going to be ok... but I don't know. I have some doubts.
Of course, I may not even be able to verify anyway, this whole thing is a mess, with my address being in a totally different country than my nationalities, and my not having a German drivers license. (don't own a car, don't need one) now that, well, most players where clothing on there avatars, and personly, im not yiffy, or liek sex all the time, so i personly would be kind of grossed out to see a but naked av walking down the street in the metaverse

From: Brenda Connolly Definitely that should not be posted in plain sight. That basically will lower the "optional" factor even more, as peer pressure will come to bear. Yes, perhaps that`s why they will be putting it in profiles. It doesnt plainly state they will, but thats my only conclusion upon reading that paragraph.

If you dont want to look at a picture in a notecard its easy. DONT CLICK THE LINK. Its a product, so I have to show people what it looks like. Unfortunately, LL is making it hard for me to sell my products. Skins need to be shown naked to sell them, that's how it goes. Don't like it. Don't visit a skin shop. But anyway, most people aren't walking around naked in public. What they do in private is another matter. And if you cam into their house and harrass them, you deserve to be reported for being a snoop, and banned from the parcels.

From: Atashi Yue Victoria,
What information do you think Paypal, or Amazon.com, or any number of large online systems have when you use your credit card with them? And that means LL doesn't need to do this at all. If Amazon doesn't require someone to insert their SSN when they are buying some of the salacious materials available there, why does LL need it? Using your hotel example, why doesn't the Hotel require you to input your SSN when you reserve a room? LL doesn't need this info to protect themselves -- there is another agenda at play here, clearly, based on the contrast between this program and what prevails elsewhere on the internet. The program smells, to be honest. From: someone And please, the last 4 of your SSN or your passport # is not "actually giving them the identity numbers" as you claim. I don't agree. It's more than they otherwise would have, and in any case LL does not need the information. This is a nonsense justification for bringing more RL info into SL, plain and simple.

From: Cristalle Karami But how far? People are going to have sex in their homes. They aren't having it under the covers and/or with lingerie on the women, like in the movies. I'd say it crosses the line, there, from PG to adult. Are you sure that you would not advise them to flag their parcels as adult? Nah. Seriously, perverts aren't going to come to Caledon to get their freak on. And if they do, they'll need a duck blind and the patience of Jane Goodall. And if they are soooo into us, they would probably just take citizenship in Caledon and get off on watching replays of Pride and Prejudice like we do... "Oooh Mr Darcy!" * girlish squeal * * * * * * The internet and the rest of the grid is awash with porn. Snooping around in Caledon for porn is like picking up the Sears catalog and picking through the pages for good legs, when there's a Hustler magazine right next to it.

From: Kiboe Munro they need to inforce a policy about that "IF YA DON'T LIKE IT, LEAVE" becasue no one is FORCING them to veiw that, SL is freedom of choice, there are MILLIONS of sims, to explore, nothign says you have to watch or look at pr0n, thats just my 2 cents

From: Dnel DaSilva VERIFIED CANADIAN
Tried my drivers license - no dice. Tried last for of SIN as last 4 of SSN - nope. No passport (yet, its in the mail).
I used my SIN as the identity card choice and it worked.
Now I'm not too worred about it, but in Canada the only people you EVER have to give your SIN to is your employer and CCRA. Having it as the only way to age verify in SL if you are in Canada is going to open up a whole can of worms. When you used your SIN and 'identity card' did you have to use your whole SIN or just part of it? It's a big deal giving out your SIN... I don't mind giving out part since a part of it is useless but giving out the whole thing is much more serious. -Atashi

From: Jesseaitui Petion The random sl user does not need to see whether i have verified my age, sex, location etc, nor do they need to see whether my payment info is on file or not (if anything thats info a potential hacker may like to know). If LL wants to know this in order to allow me onto adult flagged parcels thats one thing, but to broadcast whether im verified in those areas in my public profile is uncalled for.
If i want to "Shed anonymity" I can do so in a private chat with those I do not mind having the info.
.... The keyword being "initially"...whats next? mandatory verification to even play SL?
An ID, part of my social security, etc.. thats something im currently not OK with given to LL/3rd party site, to a potential employer in RL yes, LL/3rd party to play a game? No! I agree completely with all these points. I am in SL very much what I am in RL, and still see no positive value to broadcasting to the immediate SL world that I have verified anything. I have always felt that putting the "payment info on file" on the profile is simply an invitation to scammers, a declaration that there is money here to be had. In fact, stating in the profile that "gender has been verified" will only confuse newer players: they will think it means that a player's gender is guaranteed to be the same as that of their avatar.

From: Atashi Yue Victoria,
What information do you think Paypal, or Amazon.com, or any number of large online systems have when you use your credit card with them?
Let's see, when I use the internet to make a hotel reservation they get my CC, my telephone number, and my home address. As has been pointed out on this forum before, all this information is obtainable now, via the internet for those who are determined.
And please, the last 4 of your SSN or your passport # is not "actually giving them the identity numbers" as you claim. I don't know. These 4 numbers are being used more and more by all sorts of institutions to identify us. They may be reaching the point where they are just as useful as the whole 9 digit sequence.

Soon to be found in the inbox of unsuspecting AVs
Your recent attempt to verify your age with SL has failed. We will need more information to complete the verification process. Please click on the link below and have your driver's license and credit card that that you have on file with SL available.
hxxp://url.that.looks.legit.com/ageverify.php
Anyway, I tried to verify and it failed, I filled out the survey. I guess I'll try again when its working better.

From: someone In fact, stating in the profile that "gender has been verified" will only confuse newer players: they will think it means that a player's gender is guaranteed to be the same as that of their avatar. I didnt even think of that. Thats true, the gender verification must be assuming the RL typist is the same gender as the inworld avatar they play, which isnt always true. So with that says, it seems impossible to have a 'gender verified' especially with the ease of actually changing genders with the click of a button.

They may be reaching the point where they are just as useful as the whole 9 digit sequence. This is disturbingly close to true. For all currently extant social security numbers, the first 5 digits are not random. Also, only a subset of the 99999 numbers are valid; see the agency's description: http://www.ssa.gov/history/ssn/geocard.htmlIf you had other information about a person, such as the likely state they were born in and their age (which I'm told correlates to certain area/group number combinations), you could do trial-and-error and soon have their SSN, given that you already knew the last 4 digits (which is the only random part of the number). State of birth and age are fairly widely available information.

I would prefer only the word verified and nothing more to be in my profile. I don't want to disclose my age, sex or location via my profile.

But people are going to impute a meaning to it anyway, if they want to. Honestly, I don't want to see it at all. People who are not verified will know when they hit the Restricted Content lines. We shouldn't have to have yet another openly identifiable means of discrimination.

Actually I can see two reasons for all of this verifying: a. To make the dmcas and other lawsuits stick. The business with Stroker for example and the other on SC where the person created a prim pim copy of shoes and replaced them after every DCMA removal. b:to do an accurate accounting of everyone who accesses the grid. We all know the super huge number is simply total accounts to date. They need total active accounts excluding alts, which most likely they don't have. I am not getting into the other discussions because they are simply whirlwinds. But The servers, all of them, are inside the US, and credit cards, bank statements etc, are Not ID according to US law. And for those of you who are not residents or citizens of the US, you must accept this. Until the server side is open sourced you have to deal with our law. You don't like it, oh well. yes, it sucks if you invested large amounts of time and money. I feel your pain. But this is how it is. We deal with it every day. And you Canadians, unless you start talking to your ministers, you are going to because a part of the north American union and willloose those wonderful protections. Because your PM has been in talks with Our 'wonderful' president about how to do this. A final though to those who honestly believe that another SL will appear that will be anonymous. It won't happen. SL was a vision that Phil had that took 2 well heeled Venture capitalists to fund. HiphiHi is chinese based. Do you honestly expect anonymity from a platform based in a country that has less freedoms than the US does. Home is ran by Sony. That is really all that needs to be said but I will point out for those that fled TSO to SL that Home is basically TSO 2.0 ran by SONY. Araea: I respect Ralph Koster but He knows that to prevent that 1% from screwing up the fun of the 99%, you have to check people at the door. He will. This is it folks. There will be nothing all SL created that will be like SL. Yes the next level of the metaverse will appear and will outpace SL and make it look like Mosiac does beside Firefox. But will you be able to be totally anonymous? No. Why? Because of 4chan and PN and everyone who wants to hide. Govts always believe that if you want to hide, you have something to hide. SL is being forced to do this because without it the next step will not happen. So If you really believe you can be anonymous, really think you can do better than LL, gather together, and buy There and run it. I dont see that happening, I see exodus that will allow 20k concurrency again. I see breathing space. And I see success with out the fear.

People who are not verified will know when they hit the Restricted Content lines. We shouldn't have to have yet another openly identifiable means of discrimination. Some of us need it to get past the restricted content lines. I have customers who I am sure will verify and put those lines on. If I want to do onsite support for SL projects that involve anything adult, I will need verification. I'm not afraid someone is going to look at my profile and go OMG pr0n, hell... I openly tell people about my erotica work off SL. Oddly enough, the place I've been harrassed the least in a sexual way, is an erotica site where I have posted content. For some reason people are way more forward in places that are not adult sites, and I really have no clue why. It was the same when I was on orkut. Pervs and stalkers abounded but far far fewer on the erotic art sites.

You really are wide of the mark. I suggest you go and read Philip Rosedale's interview with Reuters regarding lowest common denominators and national laws.
