Got a new one!!!
More help for newbies!! Why? I had 2 people I work with try SL. Both said the same thing: "When I ask someone how does one go about earning money, they walk away!" Both uninstalled it. Find it nothing more than a chat room that's unfriendly to new people. Kind of disappointing really, since one was a manager who I was hoping to Orbit ![]() _____________________

Unfortunately, the rash of people lately just coming in to SL looking for "teh phat lewtage" has sort of burned people out on the topic, and tends to get a newcomer dumped in the same bin automatically if they start asking about money. |

I agree. I started a few people out on SL. I make sure to tell them from the begining that it costs money for alot of things. You buy money. I dont tell them how to get free money. I do however tell them Ill show them around and get them started. Give them freebie stuff you picked up. Give them landmarks. Make friends with them. If you bring them in, take some responsibility to get them started. By the way, I think th eboss was orbitted in a way lol _____________________

Pffft...Cmon..newbs..asking about making money on their first day?..I don't think I wouldve walked away but i certainly would have directed them to the closest sandbox or class on building and scripting...the buisness classes are for "big kids' who know how to "market" what they "make".not for newbs. ~Lana _____________________

I know I wanted to know how, not in a mercenary way, just because I felt I wasn't taking part in the whole thing properly if I didn't have some currency. I had no idea you could cash out and make rl money, I just wanted to get some nice hair ![]() |

i have to agree with Lana, when you get bombarded with the get rich quick typed who im you asking for lindens, it gets old. Do not get me wrong, i will help any new player that needs it(which brings me to another pet peeve, ungratefulness), but to me SL is more than a way to make money, its a place to explore and appreciate others creativity while trying to find a way to express your own. and if you make money at it, all the better.
To Midi: i see your point, and to illustrate what is being said by Lana, here is an example: i was djing my set when a new player walked in, fresh from the mill, and he asked if he could build anywhere, and we told him not everywhere, but there are plenty of public sandboxes that will allow you to build and make things if you use search, he even got a few LMs to a few. His second question? how do i make money? you can hear the silent groans, but again we gave him the answers He needed, and my boss who was there also offered him a job as a host in training, to which he promptly said no. Granted, its not for everyone, but it was a way for him to get money to get what he needed to get started. thats something i do not understand.if someone is willing to give you a start, and you turn it down, how serious are people supposed to take you? _____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I think there's a difference between making money and trying to participate though, and I don't think people really know that they can do a lot for free when they start. I wanted to find some dance animations when i first arrived and asked a mentor at one of the help areas how I could earn money so I could get some dance anis, and she gave me some really great animations and 200 lindens, which was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me in SL, because off i went dancing and I haven't looked back since.

well ofcourse..i understand that.. hehehe..I mean i really feel that as a noob(not an alt) noobs should be given a first weeks stipend or something. or a free bag of goodies..they recently upgraded the avatars..I was quite impressed with the gothic club girl avatar..her hair and hat are quite cute.
What hit me funny was this idea that these "buisness" people were thinking they were going to be able to write a 12 step help guide on how to quit your job..buy that Rolls Royce and move to the Bahamas all on SL income. I built stuff for free for so long it's not funny. Just to get the practice...just so people could see my work...took me even longer to have the nerve to actually start quoting rl prices and i'm STILL way underpaid for what i do because i dont have a "team". I pay subcontractors privately and alot of times my over head is only half of the original quote. I'm just amazed people think they can bottle that. Get a full understanding and knowledge of that in a few sentences "how do you make money here"...sorry /rant off ~Lana _____________________

you're right about people who think they're coming to make a quick buck. I have an RL acquaintance who joined and in a couple of days said they were going to make an item of clothing, sell it and make a fortune. I said nothing. A few weeks later they decided SL wasnt for them. What a surprise. They entirely missed the point.

They entirely missed the point. exactly! i didn't join to make money, i joined out of pure curiosity, and stayed for the fish! ![]() i spent my almost two years here exploring, dancing, shopping, and yes learning. and i am now just comfy enough to build some things, with instructions, that i am giving away to family and friends. But many coming in now are only seeking, as Beezle put it, "the phat lewtage" that is being made by a few who have worked long & hard to get where they are. i say spend some time exploring, getting to know the SL environment helps a lot!! and saying Hi, helps as well. _____________________

heheh looking back I may have misunderstood what his friends were asking
They may have indeed simply been asking about the linden currency and how to buy some new hair lol But the way I read it was they were enticed intially by this ever illusive "LEWTZ" that seem to be hiding around every corner and that's why they asked. I guess it's good they didn't ask me or they wouldn't have taken a couple of hours.. but rather..just a few minutes to uninstall. and let me add an adendum to my previous post..I in no way whatsoever feel like im entightled to make more than I make..or be paid what others are paid. There are people i know who have been in buisness much longer than I in SL(and some not as long)..and i'm sure they work harder than me. I am certain of it. ~Lana _____________________

I have answered the "How do you make money?" question so many times that I now just drop a notecard on the newbie. It starts by telling them that converting their local currency is the easiest way. Then discusses camping *if* they can find a chair that isn't occupied by a bot. And finally discusses breaking into an existing market, stressing that they need to be over the learning curve to even attempt this.
If all that is discouraging to the newbie and they uninstall, then they aren't in SL for the right reasons. I make it obvious that SL isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. I've had about 50% of the newbies I've helped tell me they were uninstalling and that their local media were liers. Usually I add in chat, when I drop the notecard, "You aren't far enough in the learning curve to be able to understand the answer to that question yet, but I dropped a notecard on you that has the details. Play for a week and then try reading it." To which I often get, "What is a notecard?" |

"What is a notecard?" for that alone, a slap gesture is needed, like the one Terrence gave Brooke Shields in the South Park Movie....cause if new player cannot be bothered to find out the simple things, how the hell are they gonna make the "LEWTZ"? _____________________

But when you think about it, where can they go to find Accurate info, right off the bat. They come to this Website, all they see is BS Hype about Making Money and owning land, the knowledge base is a joke, they can't even READ this forum if they haven't committed a credit card number, now it seems if they DO committ at signup, they can't read the forum until they log on to the game, so someone who has difficulty logging on can't even come here for help. There is no reason why at least parts of this forum can't be read only for everyone. None. _____________________

Brenda, I agree entirely. It is hard to find out this stuff - I came here to RA, but there will be lots of people who don't want to put payment info on file, people are wisely cautious about who they're giving credit card details to. And the knowledge base is impenetrable at best. The website does rather promote owning land and making money, so it's not that surprising that people ask what seem to be arrogant or lazy questions about how to achieve those things.
Maggie and Lana, there are definitely two types of people (ok there are probably a whole lot more than two, I'm generalising) and the ones that expect everything without having to put in the effort are undoubtedly infuriating. |

I am so loving this thread and that's not a peeve..
also "3. While we're on the subject of ladies. Would more of you consider putting some meat on your bones? Anorexic mannequins are not always attractive. At least not if half the ladies you meet are that way. There's nothing wrong with being Rubenesque or womanly." I think I'm in love - hate the skeletal avis- Did find a nice shape at RaC the other day ![]() |

I thinks some also balk at hearing the term "work" as a way to make money. They have the gamers mentality I guess, and work inplies a committment. They can't "play" to win money . It's why I won't hold an SL job or run a business. I don't want to HAVE to log on, SL is strictly recreation. I work enough in RL.

There is no reason why at least parts of this forum can't be read only for everyone. None. wasn't the Mentoring Program started for just those reasons? and i do agree the forums should not be for payment info only users it should be accessed by all. but a counter point if i may, when i read about SL it was in an article about Ansche in Time magazine, and yes they hyped the moneys to be made angle. did i buy into it? no. it was the screen shots and the other things mentioned in the article that got me curious. the fantastic builds, the total creative control of not only your environment, but your avatar a well. s a sometime MMORPG player that intrigued me the most. i did not come into this world expecting things to be handed to me, i came into it expecting to learn and to have fun. the latest residents, some of them at least, all have one thing in mind: how do i get rich here?. they read the newspaper and internet articles by reporters who do not take the time to actually explore SL, and don't realize that people like Ansche and Desmond and there contemporaries spent a hell of a lot of time getting where they are now. in their minds, which those articles enrich, you can log in on Monday and be a millionaire by Friday. and yes i know the various OIs have become playgrounds for the griefers and perverts who take advantage of new players just getting their feet wet, but again, click a few of those boards, read the various notecards in the newb packs, and use common sense. like i said it took me all of my almost two years in SL to get comfortable enough to at least build something. what do You tell those new residents who believe the hype? _____________________

Either yo work, or buy your Lindens. If either is not acceptable, then there still are ways to enjoy SL to an extent, enough freebies and such, but if not , then SL probably isn't for them. _____________________
