There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

No fly zones + stairs.
Both are annoying by themselves, but in combination, they're even worse. I have short little doggie legs and stairs don't work for me unless they're low. If I can't fly to get around, and have to leap from stair to stair, I'm leaving. A bunch of that other stuff mentioned annoys me too. I like squirrels and hummingbirds, though. The more critters around, the better, I say. _____________________

(You mentioned "hangout". Bad bad Lil! Are you trying to get us into trouble?) Trouble? Who Me? If it had been available, I might have named myself LittleMiss Trouble. Speaking of causing trouble, I finally figured out how to get around work keeping me out of the forums and I'm a tad bored right now and I missed chatting with many folks yesterday, so I thought about starting up a new thread for "Hangout Chat" ..... but then again, might not be such a good idea, huh? ![]() _____________________

I hate ban lines.... I would love to see someone create an aggressive dobermin that barks and growels and chases ya off property where you're not wanted....at least that would be a bit more authentic. These are actually available Zooby's has one (plus other breeds including lions, panthers, tigers) that patrols one's property and keeps those off not wanted. (I'm assuming some kind of a white list/black list like orbs have is utilized here).Virtual Kennel Club (VKC) dogs have artificial intelligence and can be "trained" to do an amazing amount of things. **Saving up my lindens for one of these ![]() _____________________

I'm mildly annoyed when there are so many items I have to fly to see them all. Sometimes its fun. If I had a bit more control over flight it would be better - sometimes I hit forward and I smash right into the wall... hit backwards and I'm backing up into another avatar. Sorry people! (and yes, I haven't mastered mouse look yet..)Hi, Karia! A way to go around this is to add 'Client' at the top. You can do this by (ok, I don't use Windows, but I think it's) CTRL-shift-D, and then disabling camera controls. You can then stand in one place and cam using alt and your mouse to point at what you want to see (zoom) instead of flying right up to it. If you want better control when you fly, having (wearing) a flight feather helps. If you want one, just IM me inworld and I'll send you one when I'm on. As for the 'head up the butt', I'm beginning to think it's something people made up for newbies to wonder about. This has never happened to me and I'm dying to see what it looks like. ![]() |

Here's my shortlist:
1. Irresponsible Texture Management There's no need to put a 1024x1024 on two-meter sign, guys; come on. 2. Irresponsible Poly-count Management Don't build a multi-million-polygon tree out of hundreds of sculpted pillow shapes, and then wonder why everyone in a 2-sim radius wants to hunt you down and kill you. Don't put 200 toruses in your hair, and then ask "Hey, how come every place I go, everything lags?" It's not the places, buddy; it's you. They weren't lagging before you got there. 3. People who do the above two things routinely, and then have the gall to jump into threads like this to complain about lag.] Look inward first, Grasshopper. Yes, it's your fault we're all lagging. I'll grant you SL isn't the world's fastest engine, from the start. It can't be, given everything it has to do. But it's not THAT slow all by itself. To really suck, it needs your help. That's why it's so important to use it responsibly. Proper texture management alone could revolutionize the user experience if everyone were to do it. And that's before you even get into all the other things we as users can manage better to speed things up (poly counts, scripts, physical objects, etc.). I know it's a pipe dream to expect that people actually would all of a sudden be more responsible, but it's still important to put the blame where it belongs. If everyone were to do things properly, no one would ever have any cause to complain about lag. 4. People who bite the hands that feed them.] If you ask a how-to question, and someone takes the time to answer, say thank you, whether you like the answer or not. Don't turn around and bitch at the messenger just because what you thought you could do by magic actually turns out to require effort, or because things don't work in reality the way you imagined they do in your own mind. Learn or go away. Either way, play nice. 5. People who refuse to learn the causes of, and the simple solutions for, common graphical pitfalls, and then blame their problems on SL instead of on themselves. For the ten millionth time, guys, the alpha sorting glitch is not an SL thing; it's an OpenGL thing. It affects nearly all 3D applications in existence. Accept it, and learn to work with it. It's not gonna go away. And Z-fighting (flicker), that is ALWAYS 100% user error. Just don't put two surfaces in the same space at the same time, and there will never be any such thing as flicker. It's that simple. In RL, would you ever consider putting two objects in the same space at the same time? No, of course you wouldn't, because it's perfectly obvious that it's physically impossible, right? Well, don't do it in SL either. Build more carefully; give a little more thought to what you're doing. It's not that hard. Don't know how? Well, just ask. That's what the content creation forums are for. 6. Unsolicited group invites Oh, this one makes my blood boil. I've got nothing against aggressive marketing, but spam crosses the line. Trust me, if I'm even remotely interested in hermaphrodite orgies, or Turkish translation services, or lottery, or escort services, or celebratory love of all things French, or updates on your nifty new product line that I've never previously heard of or bought anything from, I'll seek you out. You don't have to spam all my alts with invitations to your groups. Give it a rest. _____________________

- Buildings that are no copy. Ever have a rez go horribly wrong? I bought a pool recently that was no copy and it took me HOURS to set up because I had missed a few items when trying to move it and ended up with a bunch of pieces that wouldn't fit together. Sorry but if your build is no copy no modify, I'm no longer buying. |

There's no reason why SL shouldn't break these kinds of ties automatically, though. I think the complaint is because there's no obvious solutions. You have to either have the two prims exactly touching (in which case any amount of prim drift will break them apart or make them flicker again), or you have to move one inward or outward by a tiny amount (but the join can, just about, be visible - and by the tenth prim in line it will be) SL could, for example, detect sets of contiguous prims and merge them into a single surface for rendering. |

the list:
Those personal particle poofers with hearts and flowers flying everywhere. Specially when they stand in front of you when you are shopping. The Groups Signs that aren't really a group....like "Huggiebunnie's Hubby" and "Mrs. Huggiebunnie" .....sorry, can't help it I love my hubby dearly but I am an individual with my own identity. The SL main map that is at least 24 hours behind regarding land for sale and auction land. Falling snow in shopping areas...I hate TPing into a blizzard. People who leave their vehicles rezzed and running. We have a spacecraft next to our property which has been running forever....if someone wants to use it as target practice I will give you the LM. |

Biggest things that drives me crazy is...
Myself Got image in my head and some days nothing I do will create it. Being stuck be it regardless if it's something I can't figure out, my computer, isp etc. No the lag isn't due to attachments, high settings I rarely use attachments, settings are always on lowest settings possible unless there is something I just have to see at higher setting it's because of crappy isp and video card, low memory that I can't fix right now. _____________________

QED B. It's an established process. People like the security and constancy of knowing how things are going to turn out. ...sooner or later someone will make a pass at Trout... This is my favorite part. On topic, I find it annoying when my friends list is all "waiting" and "hippos". Dance balls constantly needing to be resynced, and despite the fact that I make fun of them, the guys running around with their prim junk hanging out accosting women. I'm annoyed on behalf of all decent guys because these bozos make us all look bad. _____________________

There's no reason why SL shouldn't break these kinds of ties automatically, though. I think the complaint is because there's no obvious solutions. I gotta disagree, Yumi. As I see it, the solution couldn't be more obvious. Just build more carefully. It really is that simple. You have to either have the two prims exactly touching (in which case any amount of prim drift will break them apart or make them flicker again), Well, prim drift is certainly a topic worthy of complaint. It's no excuse for sloppy work habits, though. Surely you can't believe that just because there's a minute chance that a piece of precision build might one day drift a little bit out of alignment, that that somehow means you shouldn't even try to be remotely precise in the first place. That's pretty silly, don't you think? It's like saying, "Well, someone might one day crash this new car I'm building, so I'm not gonna bother to make sure it works today," or "I know there might one day be an earthquake where I'm having my new house built, so I'm just gonna tell construction crew not to make it look like a new house now. I'll have them build me an old, rat-infested, pile of rubble right from the start. That way whenever that earthquake rolls around in the next 10,000 years, it won't make things look any worse." Look, if prim drift happens to strike, and you happen to notice it, just replace the offending prims, and call it a day. It happens. What you don't do is use as the possibility as an excuse to be sloppy in the first place. That's just ridiculous. It's not like it happens every day. And even when it does strike, it's almost never severe enough to cause the problems you're claiming. If two objects that were perfectly adjacent and perfectly flush yesterday drift apart today, all you end up with a little space in between, not the end of the world. It's annoying, sure, but it's still not a cause of flicker, and flicker elimination is what we've been talking about, right? I'll take a minor gap from prim drift over the obvious slop of an overlap any day. At least a gap is physically possible in RL. An overlap is not. Or, if the two drift closer together instead of further apart, then in most cases you're talking maybe a millimeter or two worth of overlap, which from any reasonable viewing distance, will be completely undetectable. Can you zoom in and see a thin line of flicker in that case? Sure. But how often to people really zoom in that closely on most objects? I would submit not very. And if it really bothers you, then as I said, just replace the prims. Any way you slice it, precision building is the responsibility of the user, and it's not difficult. Blaming the system for user error, and/or trying to use its bugs as justification for laziness, is childish. or you have to move one inward or outward by a tiny amount (but the join can, just about, be visible - and by the tenth prim in line it will be) By "inward or outward", I assume you mean making one prim thinner or thicker. In my opinion, that's the lazy cheater's way of doing it, since as you say, the joint will be visible. But it is a viable solution if your only concern is to eliminate flicker, rather than actually to employ any semblance of realism. I have no idea what you mean by the "tenth prim in line" thing, though. A joint of this type is perfectly visible the first time around. Whether you've got 10 of them in a row, or two of them, or two thousand of them makes no difference. Each is visible in it's own right. SL could, for example, detect sets of contiguous prims and merge them into a single surface for rendering. If you want to employ magic, then sure. You're denying the existence of some pretty major technical and logistical hurdles though. For starters, how do you expect the system to choose which texture to display on the overlap? Or do you expect it to just whip up some sort of blended hybrid texture all by itself on the fly? And if it somehow had that capability (which no program I've ever heard of does), what makes you think the results would automatically look good? Seems to me that if you take two arbitrary textures and just combine them automatically, you've got about a 99.9999% chance of having it look horrible to the human eye. No automated system, after all, could have any way of knowing what we as human beings might consider aesthetically pleasing or not. And then there's all the extra computational power you'd need in order for the system to check every single surface in every single frame against spatial coincidences of surfaces at the per pixel level, and then do whatever magic mumbo jumbo it might have to do to combine the polygons before each frame rendering is complete. And then you have to put in some sort of wizardry to ensure that the results are consistent from frame to frame. Graphics just doesn't work that way. What you're talking about is not technically practical, at least not in any way I can think of. Building a little more carefully, on the other hand, is perfectly feasible. Many of us do it all the time. There's no reason everyone else can't as well. Anyway, I don't want to derail this thread by spending too much time on our difference of opinion over this one point. If you'd like to move the discussion to a new thread on the building forum, I'd be happy to. Let's let it drop from this one, though, OK? _____________________
