If you have problems with leet/netspeak being typed/written, then you're going to love this: Some people actually try to SPEAK like that. Really, I've had people SAY, "lol," "lawl," "pr0n," "ttyl," and dear deities of the "intertubes," "brb, bio."
Yes, these people might sound mildly stupid typing this, but they sound completely moronic saying this crap. _____________________

Hawked on foniks werked fur me! I risk being too evangelical here, but this has nothing to do with intelligence or laziness. This is the inevitable evolution of language and culture. The thing that I find most interesting is that this reactionary response is happening in Second Life, an environment where experiments with identity and expression are normally accepted if not embraced. You'll mix with nekos, vampires, furries, tinies, Goreans, BDSM fanatics and more, but heaven help the person who transposes an 'h' and 'e'. That's just bizarre. But... wait a minute... moment of insight here... The problem is MINE! I'm the one who's intolerant of fuddy-duddy, stick-in-the-mud, hypocritical elitists. Hellllooooo! Wow. Sorry. My bad. You folks carry on. I'm at peace with your stupidity. _____________________

It's cute and fun for people to write like that. If you don't dress like a cute furry in RL why are there so many people dressing as furries in SL then? It's common sense. If you have a problem with people writing like that then by all means mute/break SL rules/TP out/whatever, no one really cares.

You folks carry on. I'm at peace with your stupidity. Well, it's not that simple. If a group wants to try and define itself by misspelling words that's fine, but it's going to have to accept the fact that bystanders are going to consider them unintelligent, because serially misspelling words is something unintelligent people do. You may say "well it's different, because this group is misspelling their words on purpose, not because they're unintelligent", but how is anybody supposed to know that? If you let everybody "in on the joke", the joke loses its specialness, and therefore its strength as a defining characteristic. And no, you can't complain when, every once in a while, someboyd wh osees u ryting liek tihsm ite asssumse your unninttleliggnet. I'm reminded of an attempt a few years back, initiated by Richard Dawkins I think, to get secular humanists and other non-religious folks to start referring to themselves as "Brights". It fell flat, because to everybody around them the term sounds pretentious, as if they're saying people who don't belong to their group are unintelligent. Dawkins tried to argue this, saying "Bright" as they used it is a noun, and isn't supposed to be a commentary on intelligence; but that's ridiculous. "Bright" -isn't- a noun, it's an adjective - and when it's applied to people, "bright" means "intelligent". It was a stupid idea, and so it failed. Same thing. _____________________

The term "intertubes" is a delicious way to mock idiot elected representatives setting policy in this country who don't know their ass from a broadband connection. ![]() _____________________

What makes you think it angers me, Malia? Pep (I merely consider such things as indicative of inadequacies in posters' intellectual capabilities and therefore believe any of their opinions should be considered less valid) Yeah, well , I for one am really gonan take YOUR opinion as nothign short of musings from on high. Cut my throat if THAT ever happens. And wow, I just got back from a long long journey and I missed a thread all about "teh" How about taht? In my case I type fast, I dont bother to correct a pile of the words coz I am emailing etc as well as foruming, and I have a pretty "fcuked-up" nuero-motor issue that was due to an "event" about nine years ago. When I was pulled back to the land of teh living my "fine" micro-muscles didnt quite mesh with the orders that teh brain sends so I get this effect. If you have this same problem did you O.D also? I think over time it was improving but in Sept I had a non-related seizure and that has done it as far as repair goes. Is it really that important? Does it have a annoyance factor for the over-fifties? If so , lets continue. _____________________

Anything different or "ecentirc" must be quashed. Me personally I don't care too much that you choose to type "teh", I do wish you would use a spell checker and make life easier as it is difficult to parse past the "teh" but in the end that is your choice. Others have the choice to ignore what you write and so don't be surprised if they do that. People poke fun at all sorts of things, especially here. Your style of typing is just one of them. You do it yourself, why in this last post you seem to be poking fun at Vamps and a few other catgegories of people. Generally if we do it ourselves then we should not be too surprised if others do it to us also. Just my 10 cents |

Different? You mean like child avs, adoption and alternate lifestyles that don't seemed to have met the Jig seal of approval in the past? Pot, meet kettle I think. Generally if we do it ourselves then we should not be too surprised if others do it to us also. Just my 10 cents Others have ignored what I write for ages now - I just keep on typing. It's not as if I am breathing your air. People have make comments but they never actually meet me and speak in sl to me and see what I am like as a sler. It's odd taht people judge a person by teh way tehy TYPE. So that is what you do in real? After all AS YOU READ this YOU are in real. Fancy judging a person by their typing. No I didnt poke fun at Vamps. I liek Vamps. I was a Goth for a good many years in real. Then I discovered Fendi. This time I poked fun at the middle class and suburbanites. I said peopel make fun of Vamps etc. BUT the weird ones are NOT them. In real I am fickle. I change my mind. I question. I ask "Am I right? Or am I wrong" Well, how did I get here? I form questions all teh time. I dont "choose" to type "teh" - its what I just do. Just cant be bothered to chang eit. You know I have never been afraid of teh pokers in this world. Its fun. I am off to bed. So lighten up. Its no like I'm razzing you and giving YOU a hard time personally. _____________________

You know I have never been afraid of teh pokers in this world. Its fun. I do not judge you by your typing at all. I will say it again, I don't really care about it much but have a preference to everything I read being spell check to make it easier for me. That is not judging you in anyway. The rest about people ignoring you was my way of saying don't be surprised that people will judge you over it. You clearly said in a previous post that you like typing "teh" that it has become your thing. You posted that to Rioko a few days ago on another thread. It seemed to me you were poking fun at vamps, if that was not your intention then your language is harder to understand than you realise. You said something like "Vamps and BDSM are more dangerous than..." indicating that whilst Vampires and BDSM are some of the dangers to look out for middle aged suburbans are worse. That in my book is poking fun at vamps, BDSM and middle aged suburbans. I hardly need to lighten up, there is no problem on my end. I am just discussing this topic and was very amused by the bit I quoted you on. You seem very upset about the whole thing though. |

I find it's better to read the messages for what they are really trying to say, rather than for their tidyness in saying it. When you find yourself reacting very intensively against a typing mistake or a word that isn't quite the best choice, it may be a sign that there is an idea that is uncomfortable, challenging, or original - it is the easy route, wouldn't you say, to jeer at the spelling rather than wondering if the idea could be right? Mind you, there's always another excuse to avoid the issue even if the spelling is perfect.
