From: Nyoko Salome also don't forget the influence of the all-too-short shorthand developing from those who text-message a lot on their tiny tiny phones... but personally, i blame prince for starting it all. ;0 ('i would die 4 u', etc etc ;0) Thank you for using the phrase " a lot" properly. That one pushes my buttons. There is no such word as "alot" and I see it everywhere including business correspondence on a college campus. I don't get angry about it -- it just makes me question the credibility of the poster. Sorry, that's just human nature. I guess fossils like me may have to give in and add it to the dictionary some day . . .

I play City of Heroes as well, where punctuation and grammar are more like loose suggestions than ways of communication. I always love to get tells that say, "u teem"
I always feel like responding, "I'm sorry, I don't take orders from people who aren't paying me." Or, "Did you want me to team with you? Or are you looking for team?" I find that sometimes big words (more than one letter) scares them away.

From: Rosey Richez The only thing that bothers me is people who abbreviate and just leave out 1 letter. What is the point of that? Just type the whole word please!! <end of rant> LOL Usually if I only drop one letter, then it is simply a typo on my part - though, depending on what I am trying to emphasis or what I am jokin about, I might intentionally drop the 'g' from an 'ing' suffix on a word.

From: Weston Graves used to go postal if you dared call it "Sci-Fi" instead of SF. I *still* cringe when someone writes or says "sci-fi". It just ain't right!

You know how it is. Every generation has to come up with a new slang to differentiate themselves. In a few years the next generation will get tired of leet speak and will invent something entirely new and annoying.

I get teh; we all get typos especially when it's late at night and we are typing bleary eyed in the dark. What has puzzled me is why people growl. What's with the "grrrrr" typed response to express displeasure? Do typing growlers growl in real life conversation too? It's a mystery!

From: SuezanneC Baskerville an acronym, like FBI Please see acrimonious discussions elsewhere for a description of your error. Pep (I always assume that if people don't use the shift key - capitals, punctuation etc - that they are probably typing one handed; draw your own conclusions)

From: StaggerLee Voom Why? Seriously, explain it to me like I'm a three year old. Along with hawt, bewts, smexy, kitteh, and all that other jive. It makes me apoplectic. Makes me mute people. Makes me TP out before I violate several TOS clauses. Yeah I'm a gnarly goat dude so of course I don't get it. 'Splain, Lucy.... It's pretentious posing. Or a disguise for those who can't spell or type or think so little of their readers that they can't be bothered to spell check. Pep (If you started this thread because of my suggestion elsewhere then thank you; if you didn't, I still thank you)

Yeah I'm a gnarly goat dude so of course I don't get it.
'Splain, Lucy.... Have to agree on 'teh' as opposed to several other combinations. 'Teh' is not a regularly botched sequence where the word goes against how many people's fingers fire on the keyboard. To do it occasionally can happen to anyone, but there are two posters who insist that they do it all the time by accident. Yeah, right. 'T' and 'E' are typically struck by the same hand, so a real 'teh' becoming 'the' is more logical than 'the' regularly becoming 'teh'. And it isn't a shorthand for anything when it contains the same letters. I can accept people being amusing (as if it were my call anyway) or semi-dyslexic misspellings anywhere (I have two of my own that are a bane to my touch typing), but to post 'teh' over and over in what is otherwise a serious post is a touch deliberately illiterate. And using 'teh' repeatedly in a flame post or whining post is truly poring oil on the flames (no pun intended).

any and all typos of mine are because my brain goes too fast for my fingers. my mother TOLD me to take typing in high school and i refused...i told her i would NEVER have to type, so why would i need it. LOL
as for alot instead of a lot...im guilty...its one less keystroke so i just type it that way.

From: Cael Merryman To do it occasionally can happen to anyone, but there are two posters who insist that they do it all the time by accident. I do it all the time by accident. It's a very easy typo to make, since you just need to be a little slow with your right hand so your left hits "te" by reflex before the right can get "h" in the middle. The difference, I guess, is that I proofread my posts before I hit send.

From the Urban Dictionary:
teh A common mis-spelling of the most frequently-used term in the English language, "the". Since then, this typo has been embraced by the l33tsp33k community, and is frequently used on message boards and forums.
OMG j00 ar3 teh PWNED lol!!111oneoneone
I highly recommend the Urban Dictionary as a great online resource for translating everything said online by people under 20 - and nothing is more certain to piss off your kids than to use their slang!

'Splain, Lucy.... Dude! You ever say, "dude"? Don't you ever give a high-five instead of a firm handshake? Do you ever go to the store in flip-flops and shorts instead of a suit and tie? You ever flash your gang sign to your homey? Or do you always say, "Top of the morning my fine sir"? How is it you act casual and contemporary in so many ways but "teh" throws you and is perceived as an abominable affront? I'd like YOU to 'splain, Lucy!

From: Jezebella Desmoulins Misspelling words, using "leet" speak, and text message spellings are just some of the many things that people do because they think it makes them look cool when in reality it just makes them look stupid. 1 person agreed

I expect that both you and I would be absolved of posing as leetniks by the fact that the occasional 'teh' isn't accompanied by other examples of the poseur's art. (I don't proofread enough, sadly, so I know some of my 'teh's do make it onto the screen.)

Poseurs? POSEURS?!!! There isn't a person in the world that hasn't attempted to distinguish themselves by affecting some unique aspect of speech, dress, gesture, moral code or artistic expression. How can you criticize anybody for doing something that WE ALL HAVE DONE HUNDREDS OF TIMES IN OUR LIVES? You people are HIP-O-CRATES!!! And that's teh truth.
