Chris, I think you missed the part where I explained that Ivan REQUESTED his name be changed, not long after he rezzed inworld...and was blatantly REFUSED. Now, that's really the part that makes no sense.

Nah, it's OK that you agree with the other side......We have to live together as citizens of the world and your opinion is appreciated....However, can you see our side? That the name was a joke, a funny one?....We are all adults here.....The name was entertaining and creative as Ivan is in his true persona.

And can you see the danger of censorship that this ruling brings? Is it just me? Is this socialism in SL government? Think about it people, these issues, appearing at first as simple issues, may be more complex than they appear at first examination if you think it through.

Colette...my dear...in case you haven't realized it...Second Life...is a VIRTUAL community...that means it is NOT real...there are so many things in SL that one can do, that you couldn't do in RL...

And, also...that is why there are 'MATURE' and 'PG' areas...and, I've looked in the terms of service...and no where do I see what you've quoted. Furthermore...I think you must have missed the part where he spoke to the Lindens not long after he rezzed inworld...and requested to change his name...and was REFUSED...Now, don't you think..if that were a violation of the TOS...they would have done something then.

I don't have any problem with the name personally.

But I don't make the rules.

The rules are PG names only.

And yes the Lindens are horrible about enforcing their own rules.

They won't change name by request, only by AR. And you have to remember, Linden policy depends on which Linden you talk to and the time of day. If you doubt this, search for a gambling thread.

Well, I think its ridiculous. Someone as respected as Ivan could of at least been notified by LL that action was going to be taken. And as he stated, he has been a PAYING member and having spent endless amounts of money, he at least deserved some respect from LL on this issue. It amazes me how they can just go in and freeze someones account. Someone who has done nothing but good things for SL. This angers me to no extent. SOrry to hear this happened to you Ivan, but you got lots of ppls behind ya!!!

Well this is a good point. LL is really bad at notifying people about Account changes and so forth.

They should have given him notice and warned him, etc.

But they are always bad about that stuff with everybody. Not just Name changes.

Bingo. It's not what we think that counts, in the end. It's what LL thinks, because even if the name is AR'd they can chose to ignore the AR or make a person change their name.

I'm pretty fine with a lot of 'adult' names in SL, but I'm not a Linden, so my opinion doesn't count

Okay, I've not jumped into this til now because I know Sapph and her partner.......we've had many many laughs together (though not in the last 9 months or so). I know Sapph to be a an extremely nice person, very sincere and has about the hardest head in SL . I agree the action taken by LL is a little rash.......especially since the name is not blatantly offensive to me (nor, my guess would be, none of the people I know in SL). But, I have to agree with Collete.......it does violate the Community Standards. It's at the descretion of whoever is in charge of violations of that nature to take the actions they feel is appropriate. It's their world, they make the rules, they enforce those rules in the way they see fit........we are invited to share their world as long as we obey their rules. It's not socialism.......it's a private company making the rules and we can either obey or go away. If you want to equate SL to any form of government, the closest form would be a Kingdom.......Linden Lab is King.

Sapph, remember when we all got banned from that certain club? How we felt we were wronged? No matter how much everyone in the club loved our shenanagans we were out......we violated what the the owner of the club considered something important enough to not care what anyone thought. It did not matter. We had to comply or leave. It's pretty much the same thing here.

It's built by the people, but it's owned by Linden Lab.

It's probably more fascism than socialism, but that isn't important. There is no "government" to censor anyone. SL is a service. LL is the service provider and they have a Terms of Service. We have no inherent rights beyond what LL provide, we are free to leave at anytime we wish if those terms do not suit us. Unfortunately, LL is famous for enforcing the TOS in a wildly inconsistent manner and for poorly communicating when they do.

Your friend asked for the name change and was refused. LL showed bad form by not only doing it themselves, but also in the manner in which it was done. Unfortunately, it is what it is, and LL should probably change from "Your World, Your Imagination" to "Take it or Leave it".
