From: Rhaorth Antonelli and sadly I do not see the hangout so much as a public place (yes I know it is not restricted) it feels more like a club house.. with club members and such
I wonder how many other people feel like I do ... I do and don't. Recently, I haven't spent as much time at the Hangout as I did for a while. RL and SL obligations eating up a bit more of my time. And I certainly notice the difference in how I feel when I'm there. There's a sense of familiarity and belonging that you get when you spend time in a place that you can't get by parachuting in now and then. The faces of the "regulars" at a given hour evolve, and if you're around infrequently, you don't know them as well as you may have otherwise. I certainly feel the effort of joining in conversations where I didn't before. I don't know the current in-jokes, other than that Marcel's squirrel ate the floor the other day. IMHO, you get out of a place like the Hangout what you put into it, time-wise and socially. I haven't been putting in quite as much recently, and I notice the difference. So I can see how you feel like you do, Rhaorth. That sense of "belonging" pretty much anywhere in SL, to me, depends upon investing something of yourself into it. I feel that way about the hangout and I feel that way about my garden. It's like Cheers. People didn't start yelling "Nooooooorm!" when he walked in on his first visit to have a beer. (Yes, cheesy pop culture reference.) If the environment and the folks at the Hangout aren't for you, they aren't. But it's the one place I know I can go at nearly any hour of the day or night for a chat, for a laugh, or for fashion advice (something I usually am personally in need of). And that's true whether I'm there often enough for anyone to yell "Noooooooorm!" or not.

From: bilbo99 Emu I am not a party animal .. RL or SL. I like the quiet life. That said, I like an interesting or amusing conversation. I have been to the hangout and have listened to some of the more technical chats in awe. Other times I will join the friendly banter, if only just to say I don't understand a word they're talking about! BILBO!!!!!!! /me waves frantically..... where have you been Mr Nice Guy! I'm not naturally someone who will easily join in a conversation, although I'm learning fast from my music hopping adventures. I'm also not a member of the group and only know a very few of the people who are. But, I've been to the hangout a few times and have felt welcome and had fun each time. The last time I was there a few of us ended up comparing the highest prim outfits and wigs we owned. Was kinda fun and educational, becaise Qie was giving us the lowdown on the disasters we were potentially crreating with our outfits. As for the party, prolly not necessarily my thing, I'm not good at parties really, plus I don't have an alt. Big applause to those organising it though! ETA..... as for this thread being off-topic .... is it anymore so than half the threads popping up in RA these days? .

The 2 or 3 times I've been to the hangout, everyone says hi, but are usually engrossed in conversation, and I don't want to interrupt so I just hang about like a loser before teleporting away cursing myself for being so socially inept!

From: Stormy Dyrssen It's natural to feel like an outsider at first, and it's not because people are making you feel that way, it's just natural to have that feeling when you come in to a group of people who know each other better than they know you. I keep going back and going back and little by little I feel more comfortable. Just takes time and effort like it would in RL. I do like what you said about inviting the new person to a conversation. I guess the people there are super relaxed, but I definitely want to try that suggestion and see if it makes people feel a little warmer coming off the teleport. Totally agree with you. It kind of depends on the individual. I have a lot of experience when it comes to being the 'new' one in town. It's never easy, but the more you live it, the easier it gets. Not including college or university, I changed schools 10 times - often right in the middle of the school year. I remember on my 27th birthday, counting all the places I've lived. From the age of 7 to that moment, I had moved 27 times! I had to learn the hard way on how to 'barge' in on a conversation and be included in groups of longtime friends. Rhao, you are right in saying that it just might not be your cup of tea, though. I just think that the more 'types' of people who visit, the more interesting the hangout... But what do I know, I've only dropped by 2 or 3 times. Hope to see you and many others on my future visits.

From: Graphicguru Gustav OK...This thread isn't going away anytime soon, so we might as well go with it!
And for the record the Alt Party will be held on Rioko's low lag piece of property.
Donations are being encouraged (to be returned after the party) Some things needed:
Low prim couches and chairs Dance floors Dance pose balls Decorations
As I understand, the Alt contest rules are still being drafted up.
The $L pot prize money grows daily!
If we get too much money in the pot, we could break up the prize for several categories.
Last night we had several, let’s just say...interesting and bizarre avies displayed on the dance floor at the hangout! And if it was an indication of what the alt party will be like, all I can say is OMG!!! What a wild and crazy party THAT will be! The couches and chairs we are good on, the rest that Graph listed we do still need, so if anyone has any they can donate or can shoot me an LM to a place where I can get some great things for the party, please send them over!! Thank you!!

There is a cure...just open chat someone like myself and I always make for silly banter, it then turns into a free for all! Yeah, those silly wallflowers you saw the other day were just DYING for someone to break the ice! I may even dance with you if you say hi, and drop hints! Heck! I may even get up on the dance pole if that is what it takes! What could they be saying in private IM that could be that important anyway? Let’s get them out of the shell, out of the box, and PARTAY!

dont worry marcel - your squirrel is safe - i am fending off anyone who so much as looks at it meanly. I even threatened to use my popgun Jeez Louise!! If I had thought that it would have caused so many bloody problems i never would have posted! FFS its a party! why does everyone have to get so het up about it and start ripping each other's throats out. The forums are just as important to me as many of you, and I do not want the place to get so bad they shut it down. But it is a frickin post about the frickin Cartel Hangout! I figured this was the place to post it. I guess some of you disagree. As for holding it at Rioko's place, people are constantly complaining about lag. I figured it would be nice to have a party where we can hangout and have a decent time with as little lag as possible. So what if it blurs the line, it is still for the hangout peeps, and there will be a LM thingie at the hangout, why not? Now all this flaming and trolling (or whatever you call it) has people freaking out! Talk about self moderation...If you dont like a post, ignore it! posting about not liking a thread just moves it up the page again and puts people on the defensive. What good does it do? none at all! Buggering hell....Im beginning to rethink this whole party idea...

From: Claire Silverspar Buggering hell....Im beginning to rethink this whole party idea... GG calmly and gently holds Claire in his strong arms and caresses her lovely feline ears until the shuddering stops. He gently wipes away her tears with his kisses, feeling her eyelashes against his lips. The tickling eyelashes makes him chuckle under his breath. He holds Claire a little closer, and notices her divine fragrance. GG whispers sweet secrets into her ear (not to be mentioned on this public forum). GG feels Claire's arms encircle his waist and squeeze tightly, causing him to go breathless for a moment. We just stand there like that, holding each other, letting the bad feeling just ebb away...

Claire, the Alt Party is still a great idea - and as for the drama this thread brought up? Eh, what can you do...there are people on other forums that like to complain how "kiss-ass" all of the people on the SL forum are, how they don't know how to fight with each other, how candy-assed we all are...
In a nutshell, no matter what, someone's going to be unhappy.
As for me? I owe that damned squirrel for 2 bonks on the noggin with acorns... /me paws around under the couch looking for that bushy bushwhacker...

Rhaorth, I have to admit that I felt like that after my first two visits. Everyone said hi and then clammed up, and I am shy, so I didn't want to butt-in to the conversations. I went to the Valentine's party at the clubhouse - was totally shy - except I actually worked up the nerve to ask Claire to dance - but did talk a little to her and Isabeau. Last weekend though, I stopped by there and saw Stormy, Soji, and another guy whose name I've forgotten. Stormy teased me and made fun of me; Soji and I talked about some stuff - until he changed into a cat avatar, and I had a great time. Point is, that I had to speak up to get the ball rolling. I think it really depends on who is there at the time, and how talkative I'm willing to be.

Someone should get the new Sine Wave stripper pole for the party...11 (I think) smexy dances, and who doesn't want to see newbie-looking alts gyrating on a pole?
