From: Strauss Ulderport Once again, learn the terminology you intend to use. Someone who does not share your opinion <> Troll. I am not trying to start a flame war, I am however sure of my convictions. Big difference and one I suggest you learn if you want to use the internet. As tossing unfounded labels on people can cause one a lot of grief I have seen in the past. That side note aside, I do not expect much more of you. As it is obvious what camp you are in and biased in the regard. *shrugs* Certainly your choice however don't toss unfounded labels because you have no other defense. My 2 coppers You and Alicia both have posted to this thread for the sole purpose of stirring up crap. If that is not trollish, then you are right, I don't know what is. If you didn't like it, fine don't open the thread, go start one of your own to bitch in.

From: Joseph Abel That, and there's a squirrel that's taken up residence at the hangout, and I've yet to hunt it down and kill it...and it's beaned me TWICE with acorns now!! (when your MystiTool reports "collision with acorn" you know it's going to be a long night)...perhaps you'd have better luck?
Well there we go... as soon as I say the Forum Hangout is a friendly crew, someone wants to kill the squirel I released there... poor thing! So I take back what I said: some in the Cartel are cruel squirrel killers (and almost eaters i saw....). @Straus: As far as I can read, the remark from Chris was towards Alicia, and I must say I cannot blame him... As for you, the more you post the more I get the impression your main reason for protest is because of your own club. And that's too bad, because you are probably more biased then Chris is... think about that @Alicia: it is the poorest argument I can imagine, to say that when 90% of the reactions are in favour of an opinion, the reason is people are too scared to get flamed. Come on, you can do better then that. No one gets flamed who doesnt start the flaming him(her?)self. So I guess there are way more people who feel there is no problem, as there are seeing a problem. Tough for those seeing the problem, but nothing I else I can make out of the reactions. @All against forum postings: How hard is it to see the Forum hangout is NO CLUB. It is an initiative from people IN this forum, for people IN this forum. So postings about events are posted IN this forum. Really, it is not that hard to understand. Marcel

From: Strauss Ulderport As a whole the arse clown manager aside my experience with the hangout has been decent to be fair to them. Besides, the insult from Straus about the Forum Cartel Manager went a bit too far; it is QUITE possible you gave her reason. She has been a good judge of character as far as I have seen! I know who she is...and she is the nicest person I ever met! She also happens to be my GF so I am rather biased when someone insults her... From: 3Ring Binder this is sort of basic common sense, but i will say this anyway...
when i go to the hangout, everyone says hi. i usually then take a seat. but from that point on, if i don't involve mysef in the conversation, no one else involves me. it's my responsibility to jump in. i don't take it personal, it's just a fact of life that if you don't put yourself out there, no one is going to notice you. why is it my job to involve you in my conversation? you need to just jump in. besides, everyone likes it better if you involve your own self. how do we know what you want to talk about? take a chance. you'll be much better received for being friendly than for being snobby by standing quietly in the corner. my 2 cents. the thing is 3ring, other than the one time I went there with you, there have been no conversations to be involved in complete silence, and yes I did try to get a conversation going (when there have been people there) I have nothing against the hangout or the cartel, I just think it is wrong how ppl find this thread totally acceptable, yet if someone came here to post a random event, ppl would be up in arms about it.

If I am online I am either at my store (which is next to the arcade) or working. If I am at the store, I would be more than happy to hang out, chat, hell even play some games at the arcade. (and that goes out to alllll the forum folks, both active, and lurker)

I went for a look-see on "Event Discussion". The time period I displayed was one month. Eight threads showed up:
-Foundation For Rich Content Grants Available!
-Wont show up (events not showing in search)
-Ideas for Toy Gathering, Dolls, Robots, etc.
-All Day Events (how to post 24hr event)
-Ever Want To Just Enjoy Good Music/Good Company/Good Fun? (club advertisement)
-Shotcast server (trying to find a place to host stream)
-Contest flooding (how to judge contest results)
-How to promote a one time only event ?
From what I see, except for the 1st one, Events Discussion is mostly used for posting questions about How To this or that while hosting an event, or This Is My Club, Come On Down.
Eight posts in one month? Maybe it _should_ be used more. If it was right next to RA in the Resident Conversations forums, people would be more tempted to use it. As it is, the Forum Hangout is not a product, so the only thing anyone will be gaining are new friendships and a few laughs. Who will want to come? People who like to roam the SL forums.
How many 'Forum' places can there be - there ain't that many SL residents posting here...

All I know is other than that one time I was there with 3ring, no one talks much
I dunno if it is lag, or if they are in im's or on voice or what but after about 20 to 30 minutes of silence, I leave
(and it is hard to enter a conversation when there is either no one there, or no one talking)
besides, I feel it is rude to just jump in on peoples conversation (a nice "hi, how you doing, come on over and join us, we are discussing/chatting about *insert topic here*" usually helps ppl join a conversations)
on a side note.... to all of those folks who have tried visiting there and it is quiet or they felt left out or whatever, you are more than welcome to come visit me at my place. (and that goes out to alllll the forum folks, both active, and lurker) I've been there a couple times when you have shown up. You have always gotten a warm welcome, but yes, those were quiet days. You also only stayed for maybe 5 mins before taking off and didn't make an effort to start a conversation. I know how you feel about jumping into conversations, I feel the same way. The way I look at it is that his a public hangout, if people wanted their conversations private, they wouldn't be in open chat. Jumping in is truly the best way to get to know this wonderful group. I started out as a wallflower and now.........I can't seem to stop jabbering at times. Rha, I have no doubt that you are a very kind person and urge you to keep coming into the hangout, give it more than 5 mins at any one given time.

Rha, I have no doubt that you are a very kind person and urge you to keep coming into the hangout, give it more than 5 mins at any one given time. not sure what you consider a warm welcome the times I went there and ppl said hi, that is pretty much all that was said, was hi yes there have been a couple times that ppl spoke a little more (one of those times was when 3ring was there) overall though I would not say that the atmosphere was overly friendly or welcoming I have been there quite a few times when there is no one at all there, totally empty, not even a dot on the map... *shrug* yes sometimes I run out after about 5 minutes, usually because I either have to work, or someone is requesting my help with something. I may come back and visit, dunno yet. (I will not just jump into someone elses conversations, mainly because I have not a clue what they are talking about) I know if ppl did not want their conversations to be public they would go to im's and I am sure many do that still doesn't make it any easier to just jump into a conversation that one has no clue what it is about To make myself clear..... I am not against the cartel or the hangout, or the members of the forum I just thought it was wrong that this thread and the posting of the event was so quickly accepted, when said same ppl are quick to remind others to use the proper parts of the forum. oh well, not my forums, not my problem (I am just not the kind of person to not say something) why do I say something? for the same reason ppl post such things... because I can heh as for the rumor about me being a nice kind person HA... I am a bitch to the extreme... well.. some... a little... ok fine... have it your way... I am kinda sorta a little bit... nice *yuck patooie..* PS my idea of a warm inviting welcome is something to the effect of like I said in my previous post... a nice hi, and then an invite to join in on the conversation. simply saying hi is not my idea of a warm welcome....

I know when I first started going there it was quiet...but I piped in and said things like Hellooooooooooo, Echo! Echo! Echo! And it quickly changed. All I can say is give it a little more chance, pop in a bit more often, no one there is walking on egg shells let alone on glass! It's all about relaxing and having a bit of fun, exchanging ideas, and brainstorming too! Rhaorth I have always liked you since we first met months ago last year, you showed me your store, took me on a tour of a log cabin skybox you built, all I can say is WOW! So please, come on over, take your shoes off, and relax in the hot tub a bit, it can't hurt!

Why would you go to a public place with public conversation going on and wait till you got invited to talk? Just push your way in like the rest of us! Ofcourse there are quiet days, not everyone can be there all the time. I NEVER once seen you come in though when many people are there talking, dancing and having a good time. I have to say though, you act like because you never seen it,it must not be true. Pick up a copy of the forum hud at the door. If you wear it,it tells you when people are there. Every single night this week after 4pm(SLT) there have been tons of people there, tons of conversations and lots of fun. I was up till 4 am last night hanging out there. So unless I was dreaming, the place is not as you describe in the least.

I wonder how many other people feel like I do ... It's natural to feel like an outsider at first, and it's not because people are making you feel that way, it's just natural to have that feeling when you come in to a group of people who know each other better than they know you. I keep going back and going back and little by little I feel more comfortable. Just takes time and effort like it would in RL. I do like what you said about inviting the new person to a conversation. I guess the people there are super relaxed, but I definitely want to try that suggestion and see if it makes people feel a little warmer coming off the teleport.

I've been reading all this back and forth about feeling welcome or not at the Hangout and others commenting on it's up to you to make your experience a positive one (paraphrasing). I used to spend a lot of time there. I don't anymore, only because I have little free time to spend inworld lately; mostly to be blamed on a husband who gives me the evil eye even if he sees me on this Forum lately. I even just found out, I won't be making it to the Alt Party now - turns out he'll be home that day, wasn't supposed to be; grrrrr!. The other, because I tend to be in early in the day when I am, and sadly not many people are around when I am. Certainly they aren't at the Hangout, that much I can tell you. Wait, I digressed. Sorry for complaining. Let me get back on track I have to agree with those saying you HAVE to speak up while there! Some of the best times I've had inworld have been just hanging out with a group of people, having conversations; either intelligent, witty, ridiculous, sarcastic, sexual, teasing or some combination of all. But, you must stick around and speak in order to get those conversations flowing. I can't tell you how many times it was quiet and one person made some banal observation and before you knew it, everyone was off and running on some wild tangent. Also, as others have mentioned - everyone is very welcoming to anyone who walks in the door. Everyone says hello immediately to all who TP in. So, it's quite easy to get right into the conversation. All you have to do is say hi back, have a seat, ask what's going on and before you know it, you're in in the middle of the fracas with the rest of us. For anyone who has ever felt a bit unwelcome or unsure about being there, give it another try. Perhaps it was an off night. Sometimes it happens. There are some slow times. I know I've been there and there have been times when not everyone is really in the mood to talk, perhaps they are having private conversations in IM with others, are AFK/Busy and forgot to mention it, cleaning their inventory and just prefer to sit in the Hangout to do so. But I'd never take it personally. If things were slow, or the conversation not to my liking that evening, I'd just wander off elsewhere and come back another time - but I'd never think it was me; or them for that matter. The group is fluid, and each time you go it's different. But I can guarantee that the nights that its "on"? It's fantastic, and a better group of people I haven't met yet inworld.

Not Going Away!
02-25-2008 11:52
OK...This thread isn't going away anytime soon, so we might as well go with it!
And for the record the Alt Party will be held on Rioko's low lag piece of property.
Donations are being encouraged (to be returned after the party) Some things needed:
Low prim couches and chairs Dance floors Dance pose balls Decorations
As I understand, the Alt contest rules are still being drafted up.
The $L pot prize money grows daily!
If we get too much money in the pot, we could break up the prize for several categories.
Last night we had several, let’s just say...interesting and bizarre avies displayed on the dance floor at the hangout! And if it was an indication of what the alt party will be like, all I can say is OMG!!! What a wild and crazy party THAT will be!

I am not a party animal .. RL or SL. I like the quiet life. That said, I like an interesting or amusing conversation. I have been to the hangout and have listened to some of the more technical chats in awe. Other times I will join the friendly banter, if only just to say I don't understand a word they're talking about! It *is* public. I don't always put my cartel tag up. I have seen (and welcomed) visitors who have ranged from joining in immediately, to morosely hiding in a corner before tp-ing out. Public chat is just that. Jump in, even if you don't have a constructive comment. What can you lose? As for the venue not actually being at the hangout I agree with the blurring mentioned but heck, if it's only elsewhere to avoid lag that's got to be ok, no? The hangout was thought up and put together by forum posters .. for all!! I remember well the posts at the time saying your tier or lindens isn't compulsory, we just want *you* to come along and make it work .... so how about it .. making it work?
And Trout ... how *could* you?!? /me hugs Ann

maybe... just maybe.... the hangout and cartel is not for everyone
maybe... just maybe.... the hangout and cartel is not for me
I am not going to force myself to feel welcomed or comfortable when I don't
simple enough heh nothing against the cartel or hangout... just maybe not for me As mentioned, can't please everyone..
anywho... I think time to let this thread go... I made my point (or tried to) that maybe it was posted in the incorrect location, now I think it is time to exit stage left...
