From: Ann Launay I'm guessing the fact that they made the announcement means they've narrowed it down to a few choices, but they haven't made a definitive decision yet. Once they do, when Philip steps down will probably depend on when the new CEO can leave his or her current job and what sort of training will be involved. Training? 1) Orientation Island 2) Help Island 3) Waterhead 4) major sandbox That might not be ultra useful to her in operating inside of SL, but it would be immensely useful to her in running LL. And Phil? If you're leaving.. Can I have your stuff? ..... and by the way...... a huge and heartfelt thank you for creating SL.

From: Rioko Bamaisin Wow,is this good or bad? We won't know for a while yet but if it's anything like the mess ebay are making with the new changes there on the back of a change of CEO, it's going to be bad.

In all seriousness I think a new CEO would be a good thing for SL. A new CEO doesn't even have to know anything about Second Life to make positive changes in the company and their business practices. Just wait til the CEO sees that tao of linden thing.

Will the new CEO be bringing a more stable/scalable platform with him/her? I have been having this nagging thought that pretty soon the Lindex will go bye bye and $L is going to become play money. If that happens, how many of us would continue to give real money to LL? Just thought I'd add another chunk of falling sky.

We were on that path already. And with a new person in charge they will "get" SL even less.

You're right Nika. This decision doesn't signal any changes other than Philip's choice to focus on strategy and product while someone he chooses as his partner manages the operations and organizational growth. No falling sky, just the natural course of growth.

I actually think that this will have a good impact long term. I think the company is due for some fresh insight and direction. ========== That said - "The new CEO will also have to win over Second Life’s enthusiastic and fractious user base" So just because we want it to work properly and perform well, we are FRACTIOUS? Hah! /me is going to throw that term at her users and see how well it goes over there.

The core 15 Lindens may sometimes pine for the Burning Man/Second Life they started with, but the hundreds of employees now are focused on monetizing the platform. Lindex is here as long as SL is.

From: Dekka Raymaker I think if I had the choice to be chairman and not likely to be sacked or CEO but likely to be sacked I know what I'd do too. to be sacked or not to be sacked - well this is SL and isn't sex what it's all about?

i think as long as they do not court the current heads of of soda companies (ala jobs/apple and scully) - that'd be a good direction lol... (actually i think a 'recent newb' would make an excellent choice; see what sort of gui redesigns they might spearhead) dunno, it's hard to say, until you know who the choice is. and even then, hafta see how they do...

Thanks for the post, Robin! It's intriguing. Especially this quarter, it felt like LL was making a concerted effort to act like a "grown up" company, both in policy changes and technical focus. (Well, maybe not the HTML thing, which looked rushed, but otherwise, with the push to consolidate stability/security improvements like Havoc 4 and Mono, and to get to a single supportable client version.) It seemed like Philip was stepping up to the plate for operating a serious enterprise. Maybe all that operational stuff was cutting into his travel, schmoozing, and Visionary schedule. Very Bad Idea™: Bring Cory back as CEO. (Can't happen: I hear his in-world name is already changed. )
