Ohhh, another one for the reading list: The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets (Barbara G. Walker) Although a bit heavy-handedly feminist, it is an excellent compilation of information ranging from Abaddon to Zurvan (with hundreds of the more familiar concepts in-between, including Transvestism, the Pope and Little Red Riding Hood ) Not a detailed study (what single book could do that?), it has a very rich bibliography.

From: LittleMe Jewell That sounds like a religious definition or your personal view. It sure is not a legal definition where I live. Yes it's my view, but I don't think it's far off the mark, if at all. I seems to me that a non-consumated marriage can be annulled because there wasn't an actual marriage of the two people, and the annullment makes it official. I don't see how two people can be married without the physical union, except on paper, which isn't really a marriage. It's good enough when we want other people to recognise the marriage, such as after one of the people dies, but that still doesn't make it an actual marriage - imo.

From: Cael Merryman Totally unrelated comment to the current portion of the thread. While I love ale almost as much as I love dark chocolate, I am finishing a large bottle of what is called "Chocolate Stout". For the record. in my opinion this is an unfortunate waste of both chocolate and stout. Falls into the 'interesting at best' category. If it weren't a Yule present and I'll be seeing them tomorrow, so I want to say I finished it, I don't know. Pouring any beer but light beer down the drain is against much of my religion. I recently had that. I happened to have loved it, but I'm really into dark, heavy beers so this was perfect for me.

If the act defines marriage more than a piece of paper, then there's no such thing as pre-marital sex. Think about that.

Haven't seen that, but I do find militant feminism so off-putting - I really cannot get thru to what I am reading when it is very in-your-face; same thing happens to those that are feminist i suppose when reading things from a contrasting view point i imagine.

It's good enough when we want other people to recognise the marriage, such as after one of the people dies, but that still doesn't make it an actual marriage - imo. Well, the little paper that I signed said it wasn't enough to have physical union - if it weren't for the purpose all along of having children (and raising them Catholic), it wasn't true consummation. The ex got married in her RC church a few months later. FWIW, it has nothing to do with the legal issues, as we had been legally divorced for a year or so before she looked me up to sign the paper. This was completely for the purpose of being (re)married in Catholic church. Have to say, my interest in the doings of the Catholic church pretty much ceased then, other than watching how the Evangelical Lutheran Church was trying to have common services. Then after saying I believed in the Virgin birth and Christ arising on the third day, I decided that if I was going to recite mythology I didn't personally believe in, I was going some place else and left the ELCA. Now I recite mythology I do believe in...

From: Elora Lunasea I recently had that. I happened to have loved it, but I'm really into dark, heavy beers so this was perfect for me. So do I. I once read the list of the best doubles, triples and Barleywines available in the U.S. and I had more than half (distribution issues for most of the rest). Just couldn't get into the chocolate part. Still, it isn't terrible, just not what I was hoping for. I'll finish the bottle. Still better than half of the yellow, pissy beer (per Stone Brewery) I get handed at tailgate parties. Stone Breweries - my favorite tag line was 'Arrogant Bastard Ale - you aren't good enough to drink our beer'. www.stonebrew.com is a fun site for beer drinkers.

Falls into the 'interesting at best' category. Our corner store occasionally has a beer called "Banana Bread Beer" -- I can't actually say that I *like* it, but every time it's in stock I buy a bottle and drink it.

From: Phil Deakins This has officially become a debate with 'rules of debate'? I thought it was a forum discussion. My mistake. No, this is "getting hit on the head". From: Avawyn Muircastle No, I've offered to take this topic to another forum where it's more appropriate and I've offered several times. But it's up to the mods to close it and they haven't. So basically, you're going to see this thread dead... either because you derailed it or because it's closed... no matter what. Well, it's dead, you killed it, you've beaten it to death and beyond: it's a dark stain on the forums where a thread used to be, it's an ex-thread, it won't go voom if you put 50,000 volts through it, it's pushing up the daisies...

From: Phil Deakins hehe. I did say that a marriage requires both the statment (ceremony and paper) and the physical union It's not "more than", it's "as well as". Well, you know, there's traditions (including Christian ones) where marriage is defined by the fact that the couple agree that they are married... statements to third parties in the form of ceremonies or paperwork are secondary.

From: Argent Stonecutter ... it won't go voom if you put 50,000 volts through it ... I don't like chocolate ale - I think there's a few things that get put together with chocolate that really don't go, like chocolate air fresheners and perfume too. One thing that goes really well is coffee beans. I hid a packet of chocolate coated coffee beans in my pocket so I could scoff the lot later and they melted into a big slab Happy non-denominational winter (or summer if you are in the southern hemisphere) festival, one and all!!!

From: Oryx Tempel Oooh and "The Alphabet Versus The Goddess" by Leonard Shalin is also excellent. For those new to the broad scope of teachings, Drawing Down the Moon, the latest 2006 edition, by Margot Adler is a must. Recommended by a broad scope of pagan/Wicca/Craft practices as a starter, and she puts many of the commonly read authors in perspective, like Robert Graves, whose books are maddening in their circumlocutions, but manage to be informative, somewhere in there... I have two of the three editions.
