You know. . .seems to me that the question of whether or not Blue Mars is an SL killer may already have been answered.

Entropia uses the same game engine as Blue Mars, and seems to have the same sort of restrictions on content creation. I remember hearing Anshe Chung had some sort of Second Life to Entropia exchange service going on, but it's been a long time since I've actually heard anyone talk much about Entropia

That's not even close to a realistic comparison. Entropia is as similar to Blue Mars as it is to Second Life.

I don't understand how you get that. The only thing anyone really knows about BM so far is that it runs on CryEngine 2. Just like Entropia. Everything else is speculation.

Okay... Well, I know that I'm currently building content for Blue Mars, and I've done a fair bit of exploring the documentation, so I think I can say that with a fair amount of confidence.

Since we know that Entropia is a game in every sense of the word, and Blue Mars and Second Life are not, well... I think it's both safe and fair to say that you cannot compare them.

No, it isn't. It's an over-reaction to the poor design of the previous generation Apple power adapters which had a complex concentric barrel design with a flimsy plastic shell. Apple tends to overcomplicated hardware.

Well, the reason for this of course is that they create everything themselves. Any other type of computer manufacturer - of video cards, for instance - can make the most awesomely innovative and completely brand-new piece of technology imaginable, but it still has to fit into standard slots made by all the other PC hardware companies. Apple, on the other hand, can create completely new slots if it so desires, because the only hardware company it has to be compatible with is itself. I've no doubt that Apple had to go home and attack a tree with a baseball bat for a few hours after forcing themselves to install USB ports on their machines.

Oh for goodness sakes, just find an outlet and try not to kick the power cord. How hard is that?

*Ponders the flying through the hoops demo and the golfing and shrugs.*

I stand corrected.

Are you being intentionally obtuse, or something? I admit, I'm not feeling well today, so if you are just playing ignorant, it might go right over my head.

Surely you're not seriously suggesting that because it has the *ability* to have in-world games, that it *is* a game? Or are you one of those people that insists that Second Life is a game?

What about the National Geographic and Smithsonian exhibits for Blue Mars? Do you imagine that they have some points, character classes, achievements, or leveling systems?

Surely not :)

It does :( Really, I hate arguments (internet or RL).

arguments on the internet are like the special olympics: it doesn't matter if you win or loose, you're still retarded.

So does Apple. They tried to make their own hardware interfaces and they were hemmoraging money. Everyone goes on about how Steve Jobs took Apple and made it cool again, but that's not the most important thing he did. He got Apple to quit using its own connectors and interfaces and busses, no more NuBus, no more ADB, they went with PCI and USB (and they went with USB before just about everyone else, so there's no point being snarky about that) and he wanted to go to Intel (he thought the Power PC was a big mistake) but Adobe refused to rewrite Photoshop again so soon after switching from 680x0 to Power PC so he had to take a few years on that, and all of a sudden they could use the same cards and peripherals as everyone else.

Apple is only incompatible in the same places as everyone else, otherwise a Mac is just a standard PC. There's no standard laptop power connector. Lenovo could put an inductively coupled magnetically connected connector with dual overhead cam chrome plated fuzzy dice on the Thinkpad, but they don't because they're not all about stupid overdesigned crap like Apple is.

Creating and modifying things and sharing them are an important part of all of that. Everyone does it, in RL and in SL, it's just so common and automatic you don't even think about it.
Building and sharing isn't just crass commerce. Hell, for most people whose virtual life in a virtual world includes building, it isn't EVEN crass commerce. The SL economy is an accelerator of creative content and expression, but it's not the source.

Very true. I just spent several enjoyable hours making a nice swimming pool for our house.

Reductio ad absurding

I believe the correct expression is "reductio ad absurdiuming."
