But on the other hand, sometimes it's fun to just relax and indulge in wordplay and silliness, so at such times I wouldn't care for the more heavily-moderated type of forum.

In this wide world of ours, surely there's room for both types of forum.

I don't see a thing to disagree with there. Of course there are plenty of threads which contain both types of forum styles. When you have half the posters on ignore though, and are a sensitive flower, it may be difficult to realize that.

The originator of this thread has broken loads of official rules, loads of etiquette rules, and I'm not even going to get into what could possibly be motivating these rotating obsessions. I am delighted to be on her ignore list.

I can see some attractions in the idea of threads in which posters really thrash out a subject, with supportive evidence and sound reasoning, undistracted by individuals trying to create drama.

But on the other hand, sometimes it's fun to just relax and indulge in wordplay and silliness, so at such times I wouldn't care for the more heavily-moderated type of forum.

Well it’s not all serious stuff. People can joke around. We don’t mind the odd posts in between as long as it’s related to that thread. The members can always start another thread. Like I said before, the forum has become like a family. We will even create a forum branch for a particular subject when requested for a particular reason that the requesting person can control. That is never going to happen here. And remember, this is the way the member want it, that is why they are there.

In the post above yours #122 this is the reply I got to my previous post:

“If that forum is so wonderful I suggest you remain there full time.

Pep (Sounds fascist to me.)”

How can that be taken as light hearted. It is an attack and similar to many I have received over the last week from that person. Was my post not good mannered. Yet I get accused of being a troll, being a danger to peoples health, a nut job, a conspiracy theorist etc.

Yesterday I posted some information with links to research about vitamin D. I had one link in that post. I then came back shortly afterwards with another link to a government site with the same type of information because I am always being accused of posting links to quacks and nut jobs or so called conspiracy sites. I saw that a certain individual that had done nothing but attack me or making the most childish corrections to my posts having gone to a known site called quackwatch trying to discredit the first link I posted. It took me just a minute to find evidence that the owner is a fraud and never managed to pass his exams as was found in a court case. Now this person has accused me many times of not presenting good research. Of course, no one accused her of being a nut job or a conspiracy theorist did they Katheryne after that attempt to discredit me once again? And she of course is a danger to people’s health because she is trying to prevent them from getting truthful information as she would rather they stick with the established view that is grossly out of date and way behind in the knowledge curve. Then there is the tactics these cliques use by all of them replying to what you post in a way that makes you look like a nut or trying to discredit the information presented. If you reply to all of them to correct them, they accuse you of being a troll. If you don’t reply, they accuse you of avoiding their so called valid, truthful, and well researched points.

As for the 'not common' description of the "fixed it for you" meme---I suppose we would have to both define the term 'common', and commit to conducting a comprehensive study of all message boards, to determine the actual percentage of the total number on which the meme is used. I can tell you from personal experience that it is NOT limited to this one. (And I still tend to believe that most of the uses directed at you were not intended belligerently. I mean, come on, Qie?)

Well, I have been on hundreds of forums and have never seen it. But maybe I didn’t notice it because not knowing what it was I would have just assumed that the quote was from that person which is why I dislike it so much. It has certainly never happened where I moderate.

Simple ignorance then?

Pep (Try googling "fixed it for ya!";)

PS The Urban Dictionary has the abbreviated form FIFY . . .

PPS Please, please, please Millie don't lock *this* thread as you have a couple of Debra's others. The OP *still* hasn't had her question answered to her satisfaction, and we haven't had a good discussion of the ethics of the meme, as opposed to the amusement factor.

Two out of three of Debra's thread have been locked now. Is it too soon to think that a pattern is emerging?

Should forum members be allow to quote other members with words they never actually wrote in a post and then justify it by saying they also wrote "fixed it" below the quote?

I most certainly did and will continue to do so because in real life my word is my bond and I don’t want it taken in vain.
And therein lies you problem. You put far too much store in "your word", to the extent that anyone who disagrees with it must be wrong, and anyone who actually finds it funny, like your David Icke posts, is beneath contempt. You think much too highly of yourself - unjustifiably.

Btw, I know I'm on your ignore list so you won't see this post in the normal way, but people who think as highly of themselves as you do, can't help themselves - they have to look to see what ignored people might be saying about them. So I know you're reading this, even though you've tied your own hands and won't allow yourself to be seen to be looking, so you cannot reply ;)

in general in these forums i see people tossing around ideas, jabs etc and sometimes they can be pretty harsh. when i really take offense is when people start using inflammatory words like nazi, facist, pedophile, etc in order to incite the group or to really give a low blow. those edited quotes, with the "fixed it for ya", are just light jabs in my book.

i think for the most part people here either have a very thick or very thin skin here. seems like the newer you are to posting here, the thinner the skin. once people become familiar with how things work, skin gets thicker, jabs bounce off easier etc.

I am actually a moderator on a forum. The forum has over 4% of the members as moderators all picked by the forum owner of course. This means that nothing is ever missed by moderators and it is not required that any particular moderator be on the forum all that much. All members that have not posted within a week of signing up have their accounts deleted as they do not need to be members to read the posts. This also prevents spam accounts and attacks that other forums suffer from. The rules are very strict in the forum. Members have to behave. They may not call each other names. They may not attack each other. When they post a reply to something in another post they must make valid points not just say that is all a load of crap. The result is that we have many people coming over from other forums dealing with the same subject because they know that they are able to make their points and won’t be attacked which is what happens in the other forums. It also makes it easier for them to learn as that is one of the points of that forum because as can be seen in this thread, in order to get to the small hand full of posts dealing with the subject, you need to have read over 100 posts. This has given that forum a feeling of being a family where everyone no matter what their point of view is can discuss what is on their minds. It also means that the people who have some real knowledge and experience join the forum because they are not interested in having to waste their time trying to correct those that just want to disrupt. All members gain from that. Of course, all those that get banned, and it happens very quickly if they do not obey the warning go to the other sites and complain about censorship. But we don’t care because it brings people to the forum and they see how pleasant it is there and that those banned are liars.

Now before anyone comes back at me, I know full well that I did those things that are not allow on the forum where I moderate, which is why they are not allowed. It is easy to slip down that slope.

It’s not common at all. I have never come across it before and felt insulted when I saw it. It is obviously something that was created by those that like to make fun of other members and they all club together and say there is nothing wrong with doing that. If you did that on the forum where I moderate, every one of the moderators would ban you if you did it again.

I most certainly did and will continue to do so because in real life my word is my bond and I don’t want it taken in vain. This is a forum, not SL. People can do what they like in SL, but not in a forum that is there to get answers to problems. In the forum where I moderate it has a section where people can joke around, but not in the main part.

There is forum software that keeps a copy of the post before it was edited and it is possible for members to see what was changed.

Debra - I used to use a few forums. They are all very different. They seem to have the same breakdown of "characters"....but missions and interaction styles can be entirely different.

Your original topic in the Thank You thread, made sense here....some people are concerned about that. You had some decent discussion. But you took everyone from Utopia (with a few flaws to work out).....back to RL. And you started by slamming Americans in general. Most people don't come to SL to hear people slam their country or their beliefs and start tossing out judgments......part of their SL experience is to experience acceptance from very different people from all over the world, and to return it, as well, and to shed the judgments. You made a huge faux pas there, right off the bat, and it got progressively worse.

What is the mission of those forums that you get along with so well? What is the mission of this forum? Same thing? Probably not.

Now you've developed a list of offenders from all over the world, because they share a different viewpoint than yours, or use a different presentation style. Is that the mission of SL in general? Is that what people are here for? To witness yet another divide and separation from each other? Do you think that might be a problem?

I admit that I was also shocked the first time I ever saw the 'fixed it for ya' thing, here on this forum. It was a long time ago, and I've become used to it now. But at the time, I was like but.......but........but...........I *SAW* IT!!!!! Since then I've become immune to it, realizing that when somebody 'fixed it' , obviously it wasn't that way to begin with. So I'm not offended by anyone 'fixing' my posts. I know what I wrote (and so does the person who 'fixed' it) and if need be can always pull the original out of the hat, no matter what the later quotes say. It's just not important enough for me to trip over.

ETA Actually, you were right - the link worked but didn't take me to the specific video because I had missed that there was *already* a ? in the url, and adding another at the end messed it up a bit. Thank you for drawing it to my attention.
I just had to quote this as an unusual type of post by Pep -- I may frame it also.
