I started this thread because I wanted to see what people actually thought about this subject. The thread has shown me what you as a clique are really like. Clearly you think the forum is yours and you make it impossible to actual have a serious discussion. The fact that it is a forum created for SL members does not mean that it is a kindergarten as you insist on turning it into. You people are sad people that really make life difficult for others. You drag things over from other threads that have no relationship into another and think you have the right to decide when a person may use the forum without your interference so you destroy a thread. Out of all the post in this thread only about two or three were related to the subject, and you have the nerve to call me a troll.

Well, in general I agree with you that members of cliques (anywhere in life--not just on this one little forum) sometimes do behave in a very non-admirable way, ganging up on people and such.

I'm not seeing anything like that in this particular thread, though*, and I disagree that people have deliberately derailed a serious discussion:

...for this topic, the serious discussion pretty much begins and ends with 'quoting someone and typing "fixed it" is extremely common in hundreds of Internet forums, and moreover it's virtually always intended to raise a laugh, rather than to humiliate someone or express scorn".

There's just not all that much more to say about it.

Of course you have every right to interpret people's actions as you wish. If you felt that people who responded that way ("fixed it";) to you here intended to express hostility, then that's your perception and no one can say you don't have a right to it.

But I bet you a dollar that most or all of them would be surprised to learn that you considered their posts to be hostile.

*I should point out that I'm not a member of the Forum Cartel group.

Should forum members with no sense of humour be able to ignore other people and be ignored themselves automatically when they do so?

Fixed :)

Also you are not allowed to name people in the forums, better delete them before you get banned.

Okay, maybe that one wasn't the best possible example of the 'non-hostile' uses of the meme for which I was trying to make a case. (You are providing support for the position stated in that post.)

Is the topic controversial enough for that?

I dunno. I think it's reasonable for someone to want to express their perception about a common posting practice. Learning opportunities abound for all, and all that sort of thing.

That whole issue of edits/quotes is probably examined in more detail on other forums. One I'm familiar with, for instance, prohibits all edits after an hour, so that someone can't come in and make it look as though all the people posting in response are poor readers or bad reasoners or whatnot.

(In this particular case I think you must have come in with an edit right after I quoted, because the quote you see in that post of mine is unedited--I didn't delete anything, and no sneakiness intended. Just an accident of timing. :) )

I started this thread because I was furious that someone would dare to misquote me, the great almighty Debra. The thread has shown me what you really think of that kind of nonsense. Clearly the forum is yours and I should not have butted in with my daft ideas. You people are clever, funny people that like to have a good time and really make life difficult for sad misfits like me. I dragged this whinge over from another thread and I think you have the right to decide when a person may use the forum. Out of all the posts in this thread only about two or three were related to the subject, and this proves that I am a troll.

Ya know, it's not easy fixing stuff all the day long!

Katheryne - one man's meat is another man's poison. My original link works for me, creating a clickable link by adding a ? at the end if there is not one already in the link and surrounding it with img brackets not url ones. If you are using greasemonkey then maybe it shows up wrongly, but my technique works for the great majority who haven't "fixed" the system.

Pep (See - threads like this *can* generate useful information.)

ETA Actually, you were right - the link worked but didn't take me to the specific video because I had missed that there was *already* a ? in the url, and adding another at the end messed it up a bit. Thank you for drawing it to my attention. I have fixed my original link but shall let the above comment stand as perhaps others may not know how to make links clickable.

I am actually a moderator on a forum. The forum has over 4% of the members as moderators all picked by the forum owner of course. This means that nothing is ever missed by moderators and it is not required that any particular moderator be on the forum all that much. All members that have not posted within a week of signing up have their accounts deleted as they do not need to be members to read the posts. This also prevents spam accounts and attacks that other forums suffer from. The rules are very strict in the forum. Members have to behave. They may not call each other names. They may not attack each other. When they post a reply to something in another post they must make valid points not just say that is all a load of crap. The result is that we have many people coming over from other forums dealing with the same subject because they know that they are able to make their points and won’t be attacked which is what happens in the other forums. It also makes it easier for them to learn as that is one of the points of that forum because as can be seen in this thread, in order to get to the small hand full of posts dealing with the subject, you need to have read over 100 posts. This has given that forum a feeling of being a family where everyone no matter what their point of view is can discuss what is on their minds. It also means that the people who have some real knowledge and experience join the forum because they are not interested in having to waste their time trying to correct those that just want to disrupt. All members gain from that. Of course, all those that get banned, and it happens very quickly if they do not obey the warning go to the other sites and complain about censorship. But we don’t care because it brings people to the forum and they see how pleasant it is there and that those banned are liars.

Now before anyone comes back at me, I know full well that I did those things that are not allow on the forum where I moderate, which is why they are not allowed. It is easy to slip down that slope.

It’s not common at all. I have never come across it before and felt insulted when I saw it. It is obviously something that was created by those that like to make fun of other members and they all club together and say there is nothing wrong with doing that. If you did that on the forum where I moderate, every one of the moderators would ban you if you did it again.

From: Ponsonby Low
But I bet you a dollar that most or all of them would be surprised to learn that you considered their posts to be hostile.

I most certainly did and will continue to do so because in real life my word is my bond and I don’t want it taken in vain. This is a forum, not SL. People can do what they like in SL, but not in a forum that is there to get answers to problems. In the forum where I moderate it has a section where people can joke around, but not in the main part.

There is forum software that keeps a copy of the post before it was edited and it is possible for members to see what was changed.

I can see some attractions in the idea of threads in which posters really thrash out a subject, with supportive evidence and sound reasoning, undistracted by individuals trying to create drama.

But on the other hand, sometimes it's fun to just relax and indulge in wordplay and silliness, so at such times I wouldn't care for the more heavily-moderated type of forum.

In this wide world of ours, surely there's room for both types of forum.

As for the 'not common' description of the "fixed it for you" meme---I suppose we would have to both define the term 'common', and commit to conducting a comprehensive study of all message boards, to determine the actual percentage of the total number on which the meme is used. I can tell you from personal experience that it is NOT limited to this one. (And I still tend to believe that most of the uses directed at you were not intended belligerently. I mean, come on, Qie?)
