From: Otter Campese .....and one of those male fireflies that feed on dead fecal matter (broken dreams) in the jungle. There is no jungle life you see, only dank illusion and dream rot. In the jungle, deceit plays bass and mama plays trombone. Boy, can mama play some trombone on SL. But, if it were not for the SL mama-corps, there would never be any little squiggles sliming the jungle marsh waiting to hatch into 105 lb AVs, never any new mamas and new larva, never any new flies to virtually seed more lies and and illusions and more brokenness.... /me blinks.... looks at Otter... looks at all the empty shot glasses in front of Otter.... looks back at Otter... /me blinks again... Ok! no more for this guy! I'm cutting you off! Bar is closed!

From: Conan Godwin Only if you went to a real life convention with other people dressed as trees and you all fucked each other in a big pile and posted pictures of it on the internet. Well I'm safe then. I went to a real life convention wearing a Chair Costume once, but all we did was sit around. Not sure if the pictures were leaked and posted on the internet, though.

From: Otter Campese I can see I have offended you. Have you ever posited a question, lit a fire, started an argument in order to learn, burn, or churn? It's healthy - this dynamic we call difference of opinion. Get over yourself. we just have no idea what you are going on about, and you seem somewhat condescending in a hostile and deep-inner anger sort of fashion. but if that's your game baby, play on.

From: Lindal Kidd Not real? Tell that to the person you mentioned who got his RL marriage wrecked. Tell that to the people who have met a special someone in SL and wound up married to them in RL. Tell that to Anshe Chung or Desmond Shang who make their living from this "unreality". I agree. The avatars are just the visual representation of you browsing the sites (Sims and Islands), in a type of cyberspace that ain't the standard yet. Remember all the s**t-talk about the world wide web back in the early 90s...now it's accepted. I think SL is just as real as the hypertext transfer protocol internet we use every day 2 check e-mail. From: Annabelle Babii Then can I have your stuff? Heh. I've used that 1 too. Nice I can see where folks are comin from not wanting "furries" around, but I say let em do thier thing just like the "Armies", the Goreans, the "gangstas" and any other subculture type crowd u find on the Grid. I don't get the fetish part myself, but I have heard of fetishes so nasty that I probably can't even post em on this board. One that comes close is "Japanese Mountain Fried Poo". Damn I'm glad we got rid of that roommate. Long story.

From: Ivanova Shostakovich Certainly I will get a first impression from an avatar's appearance. But also among the first things you see are (if you look) their profile, and the way they speak to you and others. In this world of ours anyone can appear beautiful if they want to. But no beautiful avatar can hide poor character. QFT! Well said

How do I see people?
I usually can't, at least, not around their gigantic penis and/or boobs.

Walk In Another Form For a Week...
05-09-2008 08:54
Ironically, in the midst of this thread, I received a notice from one of my groups. The group owner is a male RL who uses a female AV. He is very open about this, including posting it in his profile. About a year ago he had an event with the group that he invited anyone interested to spend some time in a different avatar than their regular one and see if they were treated any differently. At the end of the time the group got together to report what happened and how they felt.
On May 20 and lasting a week, the group is doing this again. Especially after this thread, I am eager to participate and interested in the different reactions, if any.
From group chat last night I gleaned that some are going with a heavier av, others a different sex, some a different race or culture. I pondered my look for that week and considered various looks that I personally don't care for, but then realized that, even though I don't care for them, they are commonplace in SL. So I am going for a different angle.
Being an "insightful dude" (what my former husband used to call me), I am excited about this "walking a mile in another's shoe" experiment and see what transpires.
Note: Nothing I will be doing is to be deceptive. I am not taking on a "rp character" or anything like that, and I will still be the real "me" - just a book wearing a slightly different cover.
