I'd edited my post at the same time posted yours. The edit does explain what use of words means. I am very good with words, Pep - it's just that you don't seem to want to understand them sometimes. Perhaps if you look at the edited version, you'll learn something that you were lacking before ;)
Sure you did - and sure you are. You just hide it very well.

Pep (I didn't learn anything other than that my comments were right on the button, as Treasure, who is *not* my greatest fan, has reinforced.)

I wonder if I just post : "There goes the idiot" that you will feel yourself addressed, too?
I'd assume that you were looking in the mirror.

Treasure, follow this advice. Some things are better left not seen. This one is along the lines of Two Girls and a Cup.

I think that I was griefed once.

Someone left 200 giant penises on my land, in a rather pretentious neighborhood. I was gone for a few days, so they sat there for a while.

It was the IMs and behavior from the neighbors that involved the griefing. They were a wee bit hostile. One guy had set up a security system that was flawed, that kept booting me off my own land, while I was trying to delete them all. They were made up of 4 pieces each...and were not linked, for some reason...so it involved removing 800 pieces.....while the guy next door kept sending nasty IMs.....and I kept getting ejected from my own land......so I just removed a few pieces every day. This did not go over well. It was probably annoying to the dropper as well.....getting those back, piece by piece....at different intervals.

That was before I knew about the button that would return "others" objects. Tons of fun. I think that a good time was had by all. :)

I've been witness to a number of griefings, but, the one time I had ever been directly griefed was when I was ARed and summarily suspended for (sexual)ageplay while I was in a PG adult-sized avatar on a PG sim in a PG event. (>_<;)

Gladly, the end result was an apology from the lab and my account record was corrected. (^_^)y

No amount of eye bleach can scrub the memory clean.

Basically, I am now psychologically scarred. For life. :(

Another interesting question. When is an AR, which is after all a legitimate "tool" placed at the disposal of residents, a form of griefing?

Perhaps when it is falsified?

By way of context, I am interested in these stories because I have been updating the Newbie Woman's SL Survival Kit, and am now working on the "SL Safety" section. Your stories will help give me a better sense of the varieties of griefing newbies may face.

I haven't been griefed much since 2006, and even then it was amateur stuff - caging, bumping & shooting.
Was sitting in a deck chair near an infohub and a newbie tried to insult me into standing up so he could shoot me (Mute is your friend)
Another time some guy was trying to shoot people off the edge of the Ambat telehub with a watermelon gun, I rezzed a transparent prim in front of him, and on his next shot he flew backwards up into the sky. He came back with the same results - I still laugh at the mental image of him flying backwards like he was shot from a circus cannon...........

I just went there. Despite all Scylla's previous protestations about even-handedness across genders the entire post describing the "16 days of activism" event is little more than a rant against violence against women . . .

Pep ( . . . *not* against people.)

Ahhh that must have been satisfying. I wish I could think of creative things like that when I need them instead of later. Here's a noob question; when you mute someone, can they still shoot you? I know you can't 'hear' or see them speak but can they still do other things that affect you, or is it like they are not there?

Good question, actually. There is a link from the blog to the wiki that includes the "new" version of the Survival Kit, but, you are right, I should probably rectify that. I did send out a call in-world, as well as through the SLED list, for stories, some time ago.

The "old" version of the Survival Kit is at:

http://womensresourcehub.wetpaint.com/page/Newbie+Woman%27s+SL+Survival+Kit

The new-version-in-progress is at:

http://feministos.wetpaint.com/page/The+Newbie+Woman%27s+SL+Survival+Kit

(Treasure isn't allowed to look at this, because I haven't yet added the updated info about Cape Able that she sent me . . . :( )

Twit. (Now, don't go giving that some 'across the pond' meaning that I didn't intend. It just means 'silly person'). Just because I agree with you on this issue doesn't mean everyone must or even should. It's an area that affects me deeply because of my own personal life experiences. Obviously everyone does not agree, they have their own life journeys to walk and gain their own insight from, and determine what is 'over the top' to them. Some people are able to just shake something like that off, like a dog shaking off water and say ewww that was nasty and move on, but I can't. To be honest, I'm not even sure I'd want to, it would mean I was a different kind of person than I actually am, and I'm actually ok with being horrified by it. That doesn't mean I don't wish you'd quit dropping it into threads I"m trying to enjoy.

Pretty sure I have only been griefed once, and that was like on my third day in SL on orientation island. They had the big boards telling you how to rez a prim and edit it, and I made a box and was twirling it about trying to decide what next and suddenly I was flying through the air. I landed quite far from where I took off, but I was still on help island, so I just rezzed a cube where I stood. I was pretty worried that I might get in trouble for prim littering tho (the cube I was playing with didn't fly thru the air with me). I didn't do anything about it myself, but after a while some guy came along in a demon avatar and asked me why I was standing where I was and I told him and he said he would go get them back. Dunno what ever happened.

Edit: There are many types of griefing. Posting something that someone said in a fit of temper all over the forums because you know it would embarrass them is its own form of griefing.

Project Philomela is currently comprised of four interrelated elements:

* Documenting, as fully as is possible, instances of representations of violence against women in Second Life.

* A "Teach-in" that will explore, through formal presentations and informal community discussion, the issues raised by representations of violence against women in Second Life

* Documenting, through first-hand accounts, instances of abusive behaviour in-world directed against women and those representing women in Second Life. (View the public call for "Accounts of Abusive Behaviour Directed against Women in Second Life";)

* Discussions with community groups and Linden Lab with regard to these issues, with the intention of finding means to ameliorate, reduce, or eliminate abuse and the depiction of abuse directed against women within Second Life

About a week, some serious alt-work, multiple re-openings of my support ticket, and some pretty bold statements by myself on the forums and G-team office hours. (>_<;)

Pep (Smile, you're on Project Philomena - a not at all one-sided viewpoint.)

Pep, I was in large measure responsible for the conception of Project Philomela; in fact, I named it. I'm not embarrassed by it.

We are a feminist group, Pep. We focus on women's issues; by definition, we are "one-sided" to that extent, just as an animal rights group is focussed and "one-sided," or an environmentalist group.

As individuals, many of us are involved in other groups that deal with OTHER issues. A lot of us are in E-Amnesty International, or the Four Bridges Project.

The SLLUFN doesn't pretend to be trying to right all of the world's injustices. Nor does Amnesty International, for that matter. But our broad-based interest in human rights in general is reflected in the work we do for groups in a wide variety of areas.
