You had it too easy. In my day, we held up 2 sticks and rubbed them like mad until they caught fire.

Considering Pep was insulting me earlier in the thread, I kinda doubt it.

No I didn't.

You didn't pay at all. I demand an apology.

But I paid you just now. I even asked for a receipt, but you didn't give me one. Right before login issues were resolved, but not really.

The money didn't come through - that's why I didn't give you a receipt - and you didn't ask for one! Now, are you going to pay me or not???

In MY day, we just held up an old branch and hoped some lightning would hit it.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Well duh. You need to have some tinder ready for the sparks to fall on. And be ready to blow on it and have some twigs to burn as soon as the tinder gets going... Honestly you young people today!

Your paranoia's showing, Love.

Pep (But it doesn't mean you mightn't be right some day)

PS Yep, an intentional double negative, again!

LOL, it was a joke. You know, grumpy old man who can't accept change? ;)

Curious: is "laser" an acronym or not? I'm guessing you will say no.

Alyx, you are SO winning this thread.

Thank you, even though Pep apparently has not even read what I wrote. I did explain about different theories concerning "initialisms".

Course it is. Stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Historically it IS an acronym. If you only look at current English usage, you *could* argue because most people now just accept it as a lexeme ("word";), it has changed its status.

From: Pserendipity Daniels
Nothing to discuss. "SPQR" is obviously an initialism not an acronym, since it means nothing as a word, in Latin, nor in a linguistic crossover, in English.

Pep (You all continue to prove my point. Thank you.)

I never said it was an ENGLISH acronym. I'm about to throw my whole library at you. AND I'm getting slightly grumpy. I *could* start explaining the differences between synchronic and diachronic analysis of "words" or how prescriptive and descriptive works, and that there ARE different theories on, e.g., word formation processes (as I have already said before), but...I think I'll rather go back to my boring university admin programme and add a few more classes for next term.

I think it would be a lost cause anyway; at best, you'd be accused of being "on something", as with Qie.
