Locked? Just depends, if the open simulator is free with no charges then there is no competition and no reason to lock it. Remember that LL is encouraging the development of the Open Simulator platform as it's vision of the 3d virtual tomorrow. For this reason, mentioning Open Sim is not grounds for a lock, although overzealous and under-informed staff has done this before. Real Xtend is another which does not compete with LL. If staff is unsure as to whether a particular grid is actually competing with LL then they really should clarify it with the Lindens involved with AWG.

Someone, somewhere has to pay for the servers and bandwidth. If the people who "own" the land don't pay, then someone will bear that cost elsewhere. It brings to light a LOT of questions: 1) Do you own your content there, or can they "appropriate" it and sell it to make money? 2) Will they be around next week/month/quarter/year/etc? Spamming the forum of a competitor doesn't bode well as a marketing tactic, and calls into question the "professionality" of their service itself. 3) How will they sustain and grow their service? Whose money are they REALLY playing with? |
