Posting about how you're above it all is hardly better. Being above it all certainly is, but posting that you are... Heh, nevermind me - just in a snarky mood today. Something to do with actually having to work...

I didn't say I was above it all... I said I'm gonna sit on the sidelines and watch.. err pad my post count. I just have nothing to contribute to the main fun, is all. And this argument with Pep does seem like loads of fun, for everyone, including those of us watch..err padding our post counts!

shark with laser beam

Oooh, I got me a Frickin Laser Shark in the 7Seas fishing game a while back! They rock!

(Frickin Laser Shark, btw, is what is called a compound in word-formation. Let's discuss how to tell apart a compound from any random combination of at least two words, shall we? That at least is a worthy discussion in linguistics that has had many linguists at each other's throats for DECADES!)

We could, of course, then nicely combine this with a discussion why "laser" in "laser beam" (as mentioned several pages back) is not at all an "adjectival acronym" (whatever THAT might be), but an acronym-turned-noun that just happens to be the first constituent of a two-part substantival compound.

No ...?

I'll go back to lurking, then.

You are showing your ignorance now, MortVent. Or maybe you are mistakenly referring to the Concise version? The OED (Not "Oxford" but I suppose you are also one of those who indolently and misleadingly drop "street" from the names of roads) tracks changes in the meanings of words through time from Middle English.

Since you are apparently too lazy to look up what I am talking about here is the text from the OED site.

"As the OED is a historical dictionary, its entry structure is very different from that of a dictionary of current English, in which only present-day senses are covered, and in which the most common meanings or senses are described first. For each word in the OED, the various groupings of senses are dealt with in chronological order according to the quotation evidence, i.e. the senses with the earliest quotations appear first, and the senses which have developed more recently appear further down the entry. In a complex entry with many strands, the development over time can be seen in a structure with several 'branches'."

Pep (Is that better?)
Your priggish attempts to own what is in essence an evolving language, one which has been affected deeply by Norse, Norman, and French influences, among others, are laughable.

Someday, I hope your hatred for Americans subsides a bit. I'd also say that I hope that you outgrow your hypocritical tendencies, as well. However, that's a tall order, given the depth and breadth of your all-too-obvious affliction to that end. Really "pep"? Calling your interlocutors pedantic and grammar Nazis, while you personify those traits yourself? Are you at all capable of self-examination?

Lastly, accusing people of being under the influence of something is the refuge of a person who knows they've been bested.

Until your next passive-aggressive, pseudo-intellectual, nationalistic spate of jabbering, cheerio!

No no. I think this shows a great deal of promise.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
