I thought you were arguing that an acronym had to be a set of initials that spelled a pre-existing word.

Maya.. walk away. Quickly. Then sit back and chow down on the popcorn. Pep loves arguing and I'm beginning to think the others do to. I think I'll just stay on the edges and watch the meltdown. Not to mention pad my post count a bit. I don't think this thread will ever get locked.. Oh I know, that's why I keep posting. You know, over the past couple of years I've developed a race for a sci-fi story I'll probably never write. They were engineered to be confusing, off the wall, and very good at playing pranks and messing with people, created with the intention of keeping the rest of the universe from taking itself so seriously. I had to derive that from somewhere, you know. /me munches popcorn |

I have refuted it. No, all you've done is throw words at it. So far, you've yet to refute anything significant in the argument. In fact, it seems your whole argument is nothing more than:*shadow boxing show* "I'm right". Pep (And one more time: You remind me of those politicians whose best defence to a justifiable charge is simply to say the opposite more loudly and more often) Well, if she did, then she learned from you, a master of it. Go ahead, say it again to prove it: "I'm right!". It'll make you feel better (and give us another laugh for the time being, at least before we change the channel again). |

I mean, it may seem normal for you to run around wearing a painted-on smile and a large rubber nose, but to the rest of us, "t'aint normal". ![]() Pep (If your definition of normality is that perverse, then I'll be glad to admit to abnormality) _____________________

I demand you look up "competing" in the OED and post it here! ![]() compete • verb strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others. — ORIGIN Latin competere, from petere ‘aim at, seek’. _____________________

Really. It's like ageism and sexism. How do people think it makes those initials feel? Those words make my skin crawl also. It was the word, by the way, not initials themselves that made my skin crawl. _____________________

Are you stalking me, Maya? No, I'm just hovering behind you, making duck noises and vanishing when you turn to look. ![]() |

Contrasts well with the excess of vacuous spew coming from your direction. ![]() Now now, don't ruin it. He was telling me that he loved me. Lots of vacuous emotion = L.O.V.E. Though he also sees love as lots of vacuous emotion. _____________________

Really. It's like ageism and sexism. How do people think it makes those initials feel? +++ This would all be so much simpler if only approved words were used, and only in approved ways. Then the whole Free Lunch thing could never have arisen: neither TIN- nor TAN- could have formed, not having been blessed by the Orthodox English Dictionary. And Mark Twain would never have dared to write in a dialect other than the Queen's own. Nor Dickens, nor even Sterne. Literature prevention could have saved so much suffering. Call it "managing change." |

As opposed to a scaly skin and wings you mean? Pep (If your definition of normality is that perverse, then I'll be glad to admit to abnormality) There is a fundamental difference: In my case, people can admire my scaly skin and wings. ![]() In your case, people simply laugh at you. ![]() In either case, they both define character. ![]() |

Being above it all certainly is, but posting that you are... Heh, nevermind me - just in a snarky mood today. Something to do with actually having to work... _____________________

Not many people do - nor ignorant dragons. And for the record (as requested) the OED says: acronym /akr nim/ • noun a word formed from the initial letters of other words (e.g. laser, Aids). — ORIGIN from Greek akron ‘end, tip’ + onoma ‘name’. And further for the record, the OED, nor any other substantive dictionary, fails to recognise TANSTAAFL as a "word", whereas it does recognise laser, aids, and various other correctly identified acronyms. Pep (OED and QED) Using this argument to state that "TINSTAAFL" is not a "word" is a logical fallacy. The word "LASER" did not exist before the first laser was built. The creation of a word cannot precede its own creation. Some acronyms may parallel existing words - "UNCLE" for example - but that is merely the creation of a new homonym. It does not change the meaning of the original word. I don't believe Napolean Solo worked for my mother's brother. _____________________

He was quoting me. Mistress is ruining it. ![]() Sorry! But whether Pep quotes others or not, unless there's an insult present, Pep is talking up Pep. That's how Pep rolls. (If Mistress wasn't Mistress, or if I didn't know Mistress I might have gone a different direction and seen it as a hidden clue that Pep=Love. But then I do know Mistress).
