Is Paying for Links in Profile Picks Cheating?

Well, if anyone was going to sue them I would argue it should be Google (since they have "copied" the knowledge from the source code via reverse engineering). But the point is, do we want SL to go that way? A virtual world where a payment of US$100,000 is necessary to be noticed - if you didn't have the right job before them?

What we need in SL is a mechanism for removing the need for SEO at all. One suggestion could be this: when a user searches and then teleports to a parcel, they gain L$ equal to the number the parcel was on the search. If it was 1st place, they gain L$1, but if it was 100th place they gain L$100.
Where did suing anyone come from?

Who is this "we" who wants something in SL? You can say all that of yourself, but not "we". We don't want anything of the kind.

There is optimization and then there is manipulation.
And then there is MortVent.

How old are you Mort?

OKAY!!!!!

So traffic bots are avatar-presence spamming/stuffing of the search engine.
Pick buying is IBL spamming/stuffing of the search engine.

It's no different to keyword spamming/stuffing in principle.

But then, despite search engines delisting sites when keyword spamming is detected and the practice being described be e.g. Wikipedia as an unethical search engine optimization (SEO) technique, you say that it is ok to spam search engines.

"Unethical" - there's that word again, and not just used by some tiny/huge vocal/silent minority/majority.
Good grief! Sling, me breathing is no different to keyword stuffing in your mind. Eating a bacon sandwich is the same. Apples *are* oranges. And so on.

One of the things Google lists in its article about SEO's as an unethical practice is "gets traffic from "fake" search engines, spyware, or scumware." I'd say "scumware" is an apt description for fake traffic generating traffic bots. :p
You don't know what scumware is? Really! And you who posts as though he knows a lot.

URL please, if you don't mind. Your snippet says nothing at all.

[added]
Never mind. I found it.

Of course it means something completely different to what you quoted the snippet for, but that's Chip all over - misleading people right, left, and center. And you talk about ethics and morals? LMAO

I don't know how old Mort is.
However, I suspect that he had coffee and toast for breakfast.
This is probably much more relevant to the thread topic than is his age.

Seriously, I'd like to know because he posts like an inexperienced teenager. I've thought that for some time.

You and several others post in a manner suggesting even younger.

.....but this thread is about Picks and All Search.!!

I have distinct feeling some of you just enter this thread to troll it and just create drama or argue for the sake of it.

If a Linden employee entered this thread right now and confirmed that PICKS has very little relevance on All Search rankings and therefore buying Picks is a complete waste of money......you'd still troll this thread with your continious drivel about what is and not ethical in the world of "Chip Midnight".

No.
You both seem to be equally immature in that set of postings.
This is no indication of your respective ages however.

Now, now. I made what I thought was a reasoned argument there.
You are avoiding it and coming back with the kind of stuff that you say makes you suspect Mort is a tennybopper.

Yeah, that whole being honest and respecting your fellow man is so last century. I'm sorry it upsets you so much that I don't agree with you. You've certainly worked yourself up into a lather.

Yep, a fairer one that you simply have to do nothing to it....thus focusing purely on creating content......."and then they will come"

the OP asked if paying for links in profile picks was cheating. i believe it is not.

is it ethical? should one remain silent or rise up and oppose something that goes against their personal ethics and morals?

well, now that is another matter entirely. i say fight fire with fire. then it all evens out and the whole strategy is moot. protesting it only leaves you vulnerable and broke.

no replies. as expected. LOL

Ironically it's the same people who complain about "nastiness".

We've had threads where ad-plot cutters/users defend their practices and we've have landbot runners defend their practices. Both of those topics are orders of magnitude more controversial than search manipulation and yet those threads were tame compared to this one (or the TOS one specifically).

It's not any "clique" that's responsible for "nastiness" or it would occur in every heated discussion thread (ageplay, voice, banlines, NPIOF vs PIOF, landbots, ad farms, technical measures to stop/reduce content theft, VAT, IDV, general discussion in RA vs strict Q&A, estate land "scams", etc) since all the people you accuse of it participate in those threads as well and "who vs who" tends to differ depending on the topic.

Few threads ever devolve quite this much and if it happens it usually comes down to one or two people who only ever join in on a certain topic and then only to antagonize and personally attack everyone that comes along at which point everyone digs him/herself in and the shouting continues until the thread gets locked.

Those who's been around long enough to remember the voice threads should remember one specific person for those and those who participate in content theft discussion will know there's a certain someone who likes to label everyone who doesn't agree with her a content thief.

What they all seem to have in common is that they generally (or largely) only participate in threads with one specific topic.

That's just your opinion. I would say this thread is tame compared to the Bots thread that is currently running. Actually i have participated in several over time....but keep on making your assertions.. I will concede I'll never reach the post counts that some of you have....and neither would i want to. Most of the time i'm just content in spending my time inworld.

Tame? You are bringing Mort's Second Life Sexual Preferences into the discussion!

You are so far outside of the lines on these threads, Crayola has pulled their sponsorship.

I have been looking at the sequence of a lot of your replies for quite some time now.

You only ever comment about your ethics or defend your ethics or attack other people's. It's the same regarding your character .....you defend yours whilst you attack others. In between you'll shit stir and bring up old arguments that have potentionally quieten down..thus bringing them back to the fore again. By definition, you are truely a troll.

In this thread you haven't provided any arguments at all other than chiming the old ethics one repeatedly. You can't provide any arguments against ALL search or the OP title......simply because you don't understand it, your don't really know how it functions other than titbits of info you picked up from here. The one time you attempted to....you put in your foot in your mouth with that statement regarding Traffic bots (Phil's) having picks on them and counting towards ALL Search ranking!! lmao....Go away troll!

Phil's bots may not have payment info, but many now do along with pick for the owner's shop.

And the biggest troll I have ever seen has to be you with the stalkerish behavour and harrasment of anyone that disagrees with you. Hell you make Phil look tame and polite most of the time.

Hell if I was one of your customers, reading the trollish posts and seeing your behaviour on the forums... well wouldn't shop there or rent one of you ghost mall slots.
