it'll keep avatars away from her workshop, but it won't stop griefers at ground level. we sure don't want griefers targeting her customers....

From: Maureen Boccaccio Well, the Inaugural Events begin today. (Actually, they started yesterday evening, with the Obamas' arrival via a whistle-stop train. The train had an antique caboose! ) sorry, i have more ranting on this... well actually, just a few little facts to support my rants. From: someone http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2009/01/18/pricetag-inaugural-festivities-reach-m/ "Obama Hosting Pricey Party in Hard Times The price tag for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration gala is expected to break records, with some estimates reaching as high as $150 million. WASHINGTON - Unemployment is up. The stock market is down. Let's party. The price tag for President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration gala is expected to break records, with some estimates reaching as high as $150 million. Despite the bleak economy, however, Democrats who called on President George W. Bush to be frugal four years ago are issuing no such demands now that an inaugural weekend of rock concerts and star-studded parties has begun. Obama's inaugural committee has raised more than $41 million to cover events ranging from a Philadelphia-to-Washington train ride to a megastar concert with Beyonce, U2 and Bruce Springsteen to 10 official inaugural balls. Add to that the massive costs of security and transportation -- costs absorbed by U.S. taxpayers -- and the historic inauguration will produce an equally historic bill. In 2005, Reps. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., and Jim McDermott, D-Wash., asked Bush to show a little less pomp and be a little more circumspect at his party. "President Roosevelt held his 1945 inaugural at the White House, making a short speech and serving guests cold chicken salad and plain pound cake," the two lawmakers wrote in a letter. "During World War I, President Wilson did not have any parties at his 1917 inaugural, saying that such festivities would be undignified." The thinking was that, with the nation at war, excessive celebration was inappropriate. Four years later, the nation is still at war. Unemployment has risen sharply. And Obama pressed Congress to release the second half of a $700 billion bailout package in hopes of rescuing a faltering banking industry. Obama's inauguration committee says it is mindful of the times and is not worried people will see the four days of festivities as excessive. "That is probably not the way the country is going to be looking at it," said committee spokeswoman Linda Douglass. "It is not a celebration of an election. It is a celebration of our common values." Douglass said the campaign sought to keep costs down by having the same decorations at each of the 10 balls, eliminating floral arrangements and negotiating prices on food. "Those at the Obama administration are trying to be reflective of the climate," McDermott's spokesman, Mike DeCeasar, said Saturday. The festivities began Saturday with a speech at Philadelphia's historic 30th Street train as Obama's trip began. Sunday's concert at the Lincoln Memorial includes performances by Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks and others. Denzel Washington and Queen Latifah will read historic passages. HBO paid $2.5 million for the exclusive rights to broadcast the concert. Monday, the inaugural committee is hosting a national day of service, followed by three "bipartisan dinners" and a concert at the Verizon Center honoring military families. The Disney Channel will broadcast the concert, which includes performances by teen stars Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, as part of a $2 million deal that also gave ABC the exclusive rights to broadcast one inaugural ball. The television deals allowed the committee to recoup about $5 million of the $15 million production costs for the televised events, Douglass said. Security and transportation costs are being paid by taxpayers. And with millions of tourists expected to descend on Washington for Tuesday's inauguration ceremony, Bush declared a state of emergency, allowing the district to recover some costs for the event. The inauguration committee is paying for 10 stadium-style screens to broadcast the inauguration ceremony on the National Mall. It is also hiring garbage and recycling services and renting thousands of portable toilets for what one supplier called "the largest temporary restroom event in the history of the United States." Obama has pledged transparency in his inauguration fundraising. He has disclosed inaugural donors as the fundraising continued, though he is not required to do so until after the ceremony. Many of the fundraisers are well-known moneymen and women in Democratic circles. Those leading the list raised at least $300,000. They include two of Obama's top campaign fundraisers: Louis Susman, who retired this month as vice chairman of banking giant and government bailout recipient Citigroup, and billionaire Hyatt hotel heiress Penny Pritzker." [/url] okay, rant mode off now. thank you. that will be all. good day!

hehe...3Ring - mostly I am concerned about the traffic this weekend. I live in Virginia, and virtually every bridge into DC will be closed on Tuesday...some are already closed today, in anticipation of that even at the Lincoln Memorial. I get why they have to close the bridges for security reasons, but, sheesh. Fortunately, the bridge I need to use in an hour is still open.

Well, my last comment before logging back in as Cael is that the money is not buried in a hole in the ground called 'party'. One self-employed friend is a caterer and she is probably going to survive in business because of this and the Ravens making the championship game. And a friend of my wife is married to a wine distributor and he expects to do well - largely from South American money being spent on private parties (he distributes wines from two S.A. countries). I understand the sentiment, but it is another version of the old comments about money being spent on the space program - like it was taken to the moon and buried. Money spent on party activities probably has decent volatility in the market place, providing employment to both perms and temps and has real benefit at a lot of strata.

From: Tod69 Talamasca I noticed, while talking to the Field Tech Support people in Arizona, that we perceive Hot & Cold differently.
For me, being near Pittsburgh, 45º F is warm, 70 is perfect, 90 is HOT.
For them, 45º F is Freezing, 70 is cool, and 90 is warm.
I also just shoveled 5" of snow off my driveway (takes about 2 hrs of work).
All I gotta say is "Global warming MY ASS!!!" Lol. When I'm in AZ in the winter all the snowbirds are saying how much they love the warm weather. And I'm shivering and thinking I can't wait to get home and get warm again. From: Maureen Boccaccio Well, the Inaugural Events begin today. I disagree. Money is being spent. Money goes somewhere. Into your, or my, or whoever's pocket that is providing the service. Wtf are they supposed to do with that money? Hold on to it and not spend it? Write a check made out to "uncle sam" so the government can roll naked in it? Spend it to pay down the debt when part of the need is for money to be spent? Spending it to pay down the debt removes money from the system. So just wtf are they supposed to be doing? This is helping ongoing economic problems. Unless I'm missing something. Are they holding a bonfire and in praise of all holy Obama they are burning billions of dollars? Wtf do you think the money is going? And the fing SL just asked me how I like SL right now. Now that I can't get into SL. blocked. Keep trying. Up pops resident survey. Better or worse? I CAN"T GET IN! DO YOU THINK IT IS BETTER OR WORSE YOU commie . . I'm in.

should the money for these parties, from entertainers, go straight to deficits? maybe.
are people who are providing services for these parties benefitting? some, yes.
could the entertainers generosity be used more wisely? yes.
do i have solutions? not really.

Although I'd like to see the Washington Galas toned down, I'd rather see my money at least going to some of the businesses that will be servicing them, than thrown away on failed corporations, and incompetent CEO's who probably couldn't graduate from McDonald's Hamburger University.
