No, no - like I said, I don't know about global warming, but I know that a few really, really cold days out of the year don't say anything for or against it, because it deals with average, annual temperatures rather than daily temperatures.

Re our impact on Gaia
![]() I agree we need to take care of our planet- it only makes sense! It's the only one we have and it's stupid to pollute it and as u say "muck it up". What IS wrong is to turn it into a political forum for undercutting ur opposition and turning it all into "they against us". We are all in it together. But u have these politico types here in the States, that saw a great opportunity to get ahead and make the "other side" look like world eating users. Meantime, these same politicos are in bed with a lot of power hungry biggies and just hide it well- not to say the other side is clean cause u throw politics into anything and it is a 100% chance everybody is in it for themselves. So here we have some rich guy in Texas telling us how wind power is the best thing ever and we need to stop going for oil- but Cuba is leasing their oil fields- hello- 90 miles away from me, btw- to China- so China can drill in the oceans off Florida- but we cant, the US, cause we could damage the environment--- China, you know- the poison milk, kill the dogs, enslave their people and run them over with tanks folks.. those people.. so - u think maybe it wd be best if the US takes care of the drilling before China gets into it..? Just a thought... Meanwhile- OPEC is cutting back production to raise the price of oil and still we don't do enough to make sensible choices for alternative energy - it is not about Global Warming- it's about economics and who has the best press and best spin doctors. By all means- lets go green- but sensibly. and for the planet- not for the sake of who is ahead in the poles- Off soapbox- gotta go grocery shopping- back later... Hugz thread- sorry little thread- me is still spinny... _____________________

The whole "Save the planet" deal would be great if it was about saving the planet. But it isn't. From Kyoto on down it is simply a politically driven move to control resources, personal freedoms, and forced economic redistribution. Do we have an impact on the environment? Of course. Is it as big as the doomsayers say? I don't believe so. I think mother nature still has the upper hand and always will. She just doesn't have a bunch of junk scientists, anarchists and political hacks to help push her agenda. Then again, she probably doesn't need them.

Average annual temperatures where? Des Moines? Timbuktu? 100m down the Marianas Trench? Its fantasy science based on guesses and short term analysis of long term weather cycles. Average global annual temperatures. As in, the entire planet collated and averaged. I'm not a climatologist; those people study and work with that data for their entire lives. I do know that global warming and global cooling does happen, and has happened many times in the past, so it's not as if the notion is out of left field somewhere. But nevermind; I believe Brann is right. Whether or not global warming is true, its detractors attack it as if disproving the notion of global warming will completely end arguments about things like emissions and pollution. Global warming is just one possible bad consquence in a vast, undulating sea of bad consequences of environmental mismanagement. Even if it is completely false, the fact remains that too much smoke and garbage makes things sucky and uncomfortable on Earth. For instance, have you heard of the North Pacific Gyre? It's a kinda calm spot, some 700k square kilometers in size, in the middle of the North Pacific (obviously) about halfway between Asia and North America. There's garbage there, a whole lot. Some from ships, but mostly run-off from the land, having floated into this calm spot by getting carried along with ocean currents, and now it just sits there, floating in the water. Some news reports about it have exaggerated, calling it a "trash island", as if you could take a boat there and walk around on a big floating plain of garbage. It's not like that at all, but the fact is there's a LOT of trash there; you can see it if you take a ship or boat through there. Thousands of miles from the nearest inhabited place, all this trash just floating in the water for a few thousand kilometers. That really, really sucks. And is sad. _____________________

Thousands of miles from the nearest inhabited place, all this trash just floating in the water for a few thousand kilometers. That really, really sucks. And is sad. Yup. Here's more info on it. "The gyre has actually given birth to two large masses of ever-accumulating trash, known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches, sometimes collectively called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The Eastern Garbage Patch floats between Hawaii and California; scientists estimate its size as two times bigger than Texas [source: LA Times]. The Western Garbage Patch forms east of Japan and west of Hawaii. Each swirling mass of refuse is massive and collects trash from all over the world. The patches are connected by a thin 6,000-mile long current called the Subtropical Convergence Zone" From: http://science.howstuffworks.com/great-pacific-garbage-patch.htm _____________________
