From: Bradley Bracken There are no federal laws against nudity, but the FCC does restrict nudity and language on television and they are a federal agency. One with way too much power I believe.
I personally was very offended by the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. Not because of her exposed nipple (yawn), but because it seemed like a cheesy publicity stunt on her part. I have no proof of that, of course, just my humble opinion. Yeah the FCC was given pretty severe broad reaching powers back in the time of radio - and thats probably a big reason they are so conservative. A lot of their policies date back to an earlier time.

Can I just say, on behalf of some Europeans, it's not wall to wall bare breastedness ... I think the contrast is heavily exagerated becuase people have agendas. We have Music videos every bit as suggestive as any of those European commercials. Just in the US the nipples are covered up.

From: Bodhisatva Paperclip "... The beet is the melancholy vegetable, the one most willing to suffer ... The beet is the murderer returned to the scene of the crime. The beet is what happens when the cherry finishes with the carrot. The beet is the ancient ancestor of the autumn moon, bearded, buried, all but fossilized; the dark green sails of the grounded moon-boat stitched with the veins of primordial plasma; the kite string that once connected the moon to the Earth now a muddy whisker drilling desperately for rubies ... A tale that begins with a beet will end with the devil. That is a risk we have to take." And so begins Tom Robbins' "Jitterbug Perfume"
Oh beauty in words ..........
whatever comes before or after .... cannot be beaten

From: Bradley Bracken According to the teens I've spoken with, nothing more that a desolate wasteland of boredom. Interesting that they don't create a world they aren't bored in. Then again 'teen' and 'easily bored' go hand in hand.

From: Brenda Connolly Being the cynic I am, I was wondering, could the OP be not a teen looking to access the Main Grid, but maybe an Adult, with a similar, yet far more disturbing agenda? Icky. Maybe. Although it'd make more sense that they'd complain to be let onto the teen grid in that instance. But yeah... an interesting thought no less. *** ETA: From: someone I feel LL should add a Seniors Grid, so that people like my mother could have the choice of accessing an online virtual 3d world, but one where she would be safe from all the wierdness, sexuality, violence, and chaos that could exist on the regular grid. OMG. I would SO want to sneak onto that grid even though I'm not a senior. Seniors are loads of fun to hang out with. Much more predictable and less likely to grief. Bring it on, LL! Of course then I'd have to whine about how it's age discrimination for the seniors to have their own place and I'd have to start a group supporting the ability for the general public to have access to it.... Okay. I'm definitely rambling now. But yeah. Senior Grid would rock.

I dunno who's more annoying, the OP or the usual parade of avuncular Resident Answers regulars lining up to cast their stones from their respective pulpits of perfection.

From: Denise Bonetto Just wondering at what age the OP thinks the barrier should be? Would it be discrimination at any age? Should 12 year olds be able to access the grid with porn and fetish sexual activity as their human rights?
There are laws for reasons, you may not agree with them all, but the age ones are there for protection. We may live in a world now where 14 year olds have sex and babies, but it doesn't make it right. They are not old or experienced enough to know the future lasting effects. I've asked this same question in various venues before, both on the web and in "RL". I am never given an answer other than " I am mature.", or "I know some minors that are more mature than some adults." or "I know some very mature kids who could handle this (SL)." Worse yet, there are the hysterical, "OMG YOU JUST WANNA HAVE SEXXORZ STOP HAVING SEXXORZ YOU'RE SICK AND THATS WHY YOU DON'T WANT CHILDREN IN SL! PEDO!" types. Let's set aside the ridiculous subjectivity contained in those statements for a moment... What then, is the answer? Where does it end? Do certain 13 year olds get to drive cars because Joe or Jane Adult thinks these particular kids are better drivers than some adults? More responsible with alcohol? Prescription drugs? Maybe countries and their respective states should spend billions more than they already do, so that we can assess each child, in a fruitless effort to ensure that some extra special kids aren't discriminated against? Everyone thinks their kids, or their nieces and nephews, their grandchildren, their friend's children, what have you, are more mature and intelligent. It's human nature. Simple familiarity bias. Nothing more, nothing less, and such biased narrow-mindedness has no business crying discrimination and the like. Or crying for policy reform. That is offensive to civil society. We all have to go through coming of age. Deal with it.

From: Mircea Lobo I shall begin with the most disturbing thing of it all. And that is the way the "underages" are discriminated and mockered for "what they are" inside the services offered by Linden Labs. Banning them from the SL for being "too young" is exactly like throwing a black out of a restaurant for being a "nigger". I have to ask this clearly and out loud here - How does Linden Labs believe they have the right to treat anybody in such a way? Does Linden have any kind of idea how offending and assaulting what they are doing is? Do they realize that these people, even if they are under 18, have a sense of moral, respect, and are able to notice they are directly offended and slapped over the face? I can guarantee you that they do, and even if I am over the age of 18 myself, I take as much offense as everyone to this, and I will be posting my own example later on in this post. I would have much more to say on this part, but everything will slowly be discussed with time. Right now, I am simply making my *first* voice heard./QUOTE]
Hmm I prefer to liken it to throwing a 14 yo out of a brothel or adult toy store, offending and isulting that may be I guess. I lost intrest in reading any further.

Despite 183 responses, I don't think anyone has actually read this entire post. I, and many others, stopped reading at the word "nigger" in paragraph 5 of this diatribe. I think any useful discussion has already been had back on page 1. The resident's question has been answered many times over. Resmod Strife????

I started to skim heavily after a couple of paragraphs, because the absurdity level was already hovering around 8.5 or so.. Now I am sorry that I even bothered responding. That statement from the OP is just... good grief. no.words.to.describe.

I read the whole thing in hopes that the OP would make some kind of reasonable sense to support thier position. They did not and you did not miss much by stopping early. As to an earlier post regarding the drinking age of 21, I remember when it was dropped to 18 (and I was ) and was in full support when it went back up to 21.

I think you're taking his use of that word out of context. From: Mircea Lobo Banning them from the SL for being "too young" is exactly like throwing a black out of a restaurant for being a "nigger". But, like others, I didn't make it that far. I stopped when it got clear that he was calling people under 18 on the main grid "so called underaged" which, IMO, is silly and a good enough reason to stop reading. People who are _under the age limit_ are not "so called underage" - they're just plain old under aged. Putting the word "underage" in quotes over and over does not make them of legal age. Where'd the beet thread go?

From: Bodhisatva Paperclip The OP and moderator both seem to have disappeared. Coincidence? You decide. And continuing the practice started by the OP to make wildly inappropriate historical parallels, it is reminiscent of how POW's in some of the Japanese Camps during WW!! woke up one morning and found themselves alone, the guards having fled during the night.

The OP has already skipped town and no one is even taking her side (becuase her side is LOONEY) Strife would have to close the thread for being lame, not for being controversal.
